Saw that YouTube Red has launched in Australia

For those that have Google Play Music subscriptions already, note that you get YouTube Red for free. Bonus as I got 12 months for half price last year.

Basically gives you access to download videos for offline playback, no ads and YouTube original content.

Otherwise costs 11.99 per month.

YouTube Red + Google Music $9.99/Month (Normally $11.99) @ YouTube deal post

Finally! I have been waiting for this since they started it in the US.

  • There's no snazzy splash page to show you're on YouTube Red within the Android App.

Just a little bit of text on your account page.

Yay to no more ads. Those 15 second ads when I was on 4G were annoying.

I pay for Google Music, so it's even better value now. This should make it the best service going around once YouTube Red content matures.

    • Agree!!! For once, a seamless upgrade!! Don't need to login or anything. If you go to 'Settings' and click ' Youtube Red', it should show that membership is free and billed by Google Play Music!!!!

    • Use AdAway instead.

      • I use Adblock Plus on my PC - but I was referring to my phone.

  • Wow initially read Youtube RED as something completely different:)

Not to be mistake with REDtube

  • Would the new YouTube Red subscriber get Google Music for free as well? Already paying for Spotify (which I prefer over Google Music) however not sure whether I would want to pay for both.

So I'm supposed to pay for functionality that I can already get for free using browser extensions?

      • Well I'm assuming those will be er … other places.

  • for those that don't know this also gives you the ability to lock your phone and still listen to youtube which isnt possible without rooted phone.

    • Using the Firefox browser on Android allows this.

Bahaha, gawd … so much of the Android/Google experience is designed to encourage you to not turn your device off so it's either transmitting data for Google's data gathering operations or you are looking at ads.

The crazy notification implementation is one such annoyance, the Youtube annoyance you just pointed out seems geared towards the second aim of keeping your eyes glued to ads.

So basically they're just using the Youtube name for some subscription service akin to a very small Netflix but costing just as much.

  • Can I pay for it with my Telstra prepaid credit?

    • You can pay for GPM which should also get you YTRed

  • Is there a family plan? I heard there was in the US.

  • Anyone that subscribes to Play Music have access to YouTube Red? I'm a subscriber and when I try to use YouTube Red it tells me to sign up or try a free trial.

I have a subscription to Play Music and now have access to YouTube Red. I have a colleague with similar issues. According to Whirlpool, Google are aware of this and are working on a fix. Give it time and it should be sorted out.

      • Yeah I checked other places after posting and contacted YouTube and yeah they said they were having problems. The rep I spoke to said it should all be sorted out within 24 hours. Are you enjoying it (if you've had a chance to play with it?)

      • Sign out in the YouTube app/website, then sign back in and it should be available.

  • Heads up if you pay for this subscription through an iTunes account.

    Promo price is $12.99
    Regular price is $14.99
To cover Apple commissions on payments through their service.

  • Honest question, is there any content on Youtube Red which is worth the price of admission?

I already pay for Netflix and Hulu and have little interest in another service.

    • I am sure that people have mentioned this several times already, but it's more of additional service on top of Google Play Music.
You get Google Play Music and you get Youtube Red, vice versa.
Plus, if you have an Android device and wants to run Youtube on the background and have no ads, this is one of the easy options out there.

As with contents, I did see 9 series on Youtube Red Original Channel (from PewDiePie and other youtubers I assume), not sure whether that's all, but it looks rather small.
