YouTube Red + Google Music $9.99/Month (Normally $11.99) @ YouTube

2210

YouTube Red has finally come to Australia. Google has announced an initial price of $9.99. Good for those who want to jump on it at launch.

It removes ads and allows users to save any video for offline playback. This is alongside a dedicated app for listening to music. Making this a pretty sweet deal as it doubles as a music streaming app.

    • I would maybe if it would guarantee I get closer to the ~800kb/s download my connection is capable of instead of the ~300kb/s I get because too many other users from my ISP in my area are using it at the same time. In the middle of the night and at non-peak times I can stream in 720p comfortably with no need to buffer. From about 6pm to 10pm at least it's a good day if the 480p stream broadcasts without occaisionally pausing on longer videos.

I struggle to find new tv shows I'm interested in but there is always new content on youtube and years and years of older stuff I haven't watched yet.

Also includes direct integration with RedTube

    • +3

Can it also hide my viewing history on RedTube? I don't want the missus to find out lol

      • +1

        Go Incognito :-)

      • +1

        Incognito obviously

      • +17

She already knows your viewing history on RedTube. She is more concerned about the purchases you make through OzBargain.

        • +12

Is that you, babe? I'm sorry for all the Enelops purchases :(

"How does the included Google Play Music subscription work?
As an added bonus, your YouTube Red membership includes a free subscription to Google Play Music, with access to its extensive catalog of music. If you’re already a Google Play Music subscriber, you’ll receive a free YouTube Red membership. You can watch videos, get recommendations, and see your recent activity in both products.
If you cancel your Google Play Music subscription, you’ll lose access to YouTube Red and will no longer qualify for a free YouTube Red trial."

That's neat if you used Google Music already.

    • +4

Yay. GPM is damn sweet! Ended up listening to the new Living End album before they even sent me the CD

    • +4

And I don't pay for Music thanks to Telstra prepaid credit… this just makes it better!

      • This plus Netflix Google Play Billing = me moving to Telstra.

        • +1

Can you pay for your Netflix subscription using Google Play Billing?

        • @turbodude: yeah, you can. Signed up just a few days ago! If it doesn't show up, either wait for a few days (trial, maybe?) or use another account.

        • EH what?? I never know you can pay Netflix with Google Play Billing!

        • What is the benefit of this? Using Google Opinion Rewards?

        • +1

          @lyon:

It's new.. In fact I didn't realise it had already commenced.

        • @scubacoles: It hasn't for a lot of people (myself included). Staged rollout, I think. Don't know why though.

        • I only have 2 options, CC or Paypal, this is when logging in from PC. Do you have to do it from the Telstra phone or something for it to show up?

        • @Jaxx:

          yes

        • @scubacoles: Still doesn't work from my phone's Chrome browser…or do you need the Netflix app installed?

        • @DrPotato:
did you have to sign up via the app?

        • +1

          @redknob:

as above it's not working for everyone yet

@scubacoles: It hasn't for a lot of people (myself included). Staged rollout, I think. Don't know why though.

And I don't know how it might work, I'm not even on Telstra yet… I'm just planning to switch.
It wouldn't surprise me if it's in-app only.
It was a feature listed in a recent Netflix App update.

        • @redknob: Yup, signed up in the app. Reckon that's the only way to subscribe through Google play. If you have another Google account on your phone, try that else Netflix rep told me it should be rolled out within a month to everyone. Might want to sign up for the trial for those 30 days.

        • @Jaxx: You definitely need the app. It's an in app purchase.

      • Can someone please explain how this works with telstra prepraid credit? I'm curious. Do you mean it's good when you get telstra credit at a discounted rate?

        • Never mind. Figured it out.

        • @dejavu66: How? :)

        • +1

@saffers: With Telstra Pre-pay, you get a $ amount of credit in your account. Telstra allows carrier billing through the play store, so you can charge things from the play store to your telstra account. It's kinda difficult to spend $30 or $40 every month in the play store, so it's good to look out for subscription services you're interested in (or already pay for) that allow this, as you kinda get it for free ….. unless there's something else you're planning to spend that credit on …

    • Am curious how long this 'free trial' lasts for though. It really should be in the subscription by default, no conditions.

        • Ah okay, I was misreading, I was just having trouble understanding how the two subscriptions worked together. Looks like Red is free with GPM any time, if the email I just got from Google is any indication.

  • Can you download for offline playback on IOS devices?

    • With Red you can, yes.

  • +11

not to be confused with redtube

    • You beat me to it. Was going to type exactly that

      • +5

Were you busy beating something else? ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

        • busy beating something else?

          Just a stick…

        • @bargainaus: Hopefully whilst listening to Beat It.

        • @bargainaus: beating the stick with your horse

  • just checked my iphone and it is showing at 12.99? not 9.99? is this right?

    • +1

It showed as $12.99 on my mobile device too, but then I clicked the link using a PC and the price is $9.99

      • +3

It costs more on iOS as they have to pay Apple 30%.

  • +2

Given this includes a Google Play Music subscription which is $9.95pm anyway, this is a deal. This should remove ads from your mobile device (assuming you aren't rooted and have adaway installed), as well as ads when you cast video from your phone to a chromecast so it will come in super handy for when you aren't watching YT on your PC.

    • +1

But if GPM subscriber also get YouTube Red, wouldn't it make more sense to subscribe to GPM?

    • Google Play Music is AU$11.99 ie. Play Music and YouTube Red are the same subscription.

      • +2

9.99 special promotion price. Will stay at that price if you stay subscribed.

        • That's what I was looking for. Good deal. Now, to sign my life away.

        • so I should cancel and resub I guess…

        • Success!

It took about ten minuter after cancelling before I could get Play Music to stop giving me "Already subscribed" errors when clicking the resubscribe button.

Trying to subscribe in YT Music app doesn't include the carrier billing option for some reason (won't even let me screenshot!).

Hi all, sorry for the stupid question, been living under a rock.
Why not just use Pandora which is free 24/7 with little ads?

    • +3

YouTube is for videos, Pandora is for music.

      • -2

The music streaming part of it

        • +1

          This subscription includes

          • Youtube Red (youtube with no ads, and also ability to cache to your device for offline playback)
          • Youtube Music (music vids that you can play audio-only in background if you want)
          • Google Play Music (ad-free music streaming service like eg spotify).

They're all subtly different services - added up, it's enough value to be worth it for some people.

        • @SuperMatty: I imagine Chromecast would still work to cast videos?

        • @TheDonBossj: Haven't tested yet, but I'd be very surprised if it didn't work with Chromecast as long as you're signed in to youtube with the correct account.

        • @SuperMatty: I hope so. Thank you.

        • @SuperMatty: Can you use it on multiple devices?

        • -1

@SuperMatty: The last one is the part that I don't get. Pandora free already have a little ad, why pay for any other subscription service?

Anyway, not to deny that this deal is a deal, just not for me.

        • @fm:
          * Some people simply cannot stand ads. "A few ads" is a lot more than "no ads" for some people.
          * It is a package, so it's best to appraise its value as such. You're not just paying for ad-free music… other things are included. Maybe one service is more useful to you than another. Other items might be seen as a "bonus" to the service that you value more.

If you're happy with Pandora and don't care about the Youtube-based services, that's cool!

        • @fm: The real deal is if you use google music already, then you get for nothing extra: no ads on youtube, youtube red originals, ability to play youtube videos offline etc etc. Sure if you like Pandora for you music needs then who cares, it's if you use youtube a lot, then it would benefit you a lot.

    • +2

Try and listen to an album, an exact song, or playlists with Pandora.

  • +1

Great - already a GPM subscriber - so no ads on youtube. Sweet.

  • +2

Anyone else getting error messages when trying to sign up?

    • Yep getting error messages when signing up - you a google play music subscriber as well?

      • Nope. Hopefully it works soon!

        • Working now.

    • I am. Tried on Chrome and Firefox and both give me error messages. Maybe their subscription server is overloaded?

    • +1

      Yup.

I'm a GPM subscriber and this YouTube Red should be activated, but it's not.

      • Same. GPM subscriber and TubeRed is not active for me either.

    • Yep, I was getting it but fixed now.

  • Is the music library same as the ones in google music?

    • +3

It's the same service - YouTube Red comes with Google Play Music access.

    • music library is whatever is on youtube. You can make a playlist in Youtube of your favourite songs and download them all and listen/watch it all offline

  • -6

    YouTube Red or RedTube?

    • -1

      thought redtube was free… lolll

      • but they always ask for my credit card!

        • damn really? haha oh well ..

  • +2

    Bye spotify.

Hello G Music, no ads on yt and fresh content

  • +1

Would have gone for it if it removed ads on redtube.

  • +4

And Google Music family plan for up to 6 "family members" with up to 10 devices each for $14.99 USD — they all get YouTube Red as well?

Time to leave Spotify, which only gives 50% off for each family members. And now YouTube Red as bonus.

    • +1

I asked the same question about Google Music Family account to one of the live chat guys on Red support page.

Confirmed all members would receive YTR benefits.

      • This has to be the winning deal.

    • Started the trial. Found that it's not yet possible to create a family plan with an old Google Apps account.

Maybe have to go back to Spotify…

163 music is better and free.

    • 163 has youtube?

      • 163 has MV's that go with the music. But yeah

        • So it has all youtube videos (music videos and all other videos), and original video content such as movies/series etc, and it has music?

        • -1

          @OnlinePred: Do you even 163?

        • @Turd: I'm just asking you? 163 seems to be an Asian music service. Is this correct? Possibly more important, do you know what youtube is?

        • @OnlinePred: It has obscure music too. But I wouldnt pay for youtube.

        • +1

@Turd: Yea I really don't think you understand what is on offer here lol.

You are saying an Asian music store is better than a global video-sharing website tied in with another service called Google Play Music which is a music streaming service.

If I want to watch funny cat movies, will I go to 163? Is 163 where you watch your movies and comedy videos? Do you watch movie trailers on 163?

Youtube has Music and MV's also, but it is a lot more than just that.

        • @OnlinePred: You are right, I will go back to RedTube *fap *fap *fap

        • @Turd: 163 music is better than redtube

  • +1

I was wondering why I wasn't seeing any ads.

    • +3

      From your phone though?

    • +22

That's like saying "I don't understand paying for movies, torrenting does the exact same thing and is free?"

    • -1

Although you may not have any morals, this is in effect stealing.

      • +1

No it isn't, not by the law and not in any effect. After copyright infringement occurs the owner has lost no property.
