Entering American Competitions in Australia

Hi everyone,
I was just scrolling on Facebook and I came across an instant win competition, I clicked on it, entered it and instantly won a $50 Macy's gift card, but later on I found that it was an American competition and required an American address. This was the link of the competition
Macy is an American department store alike to Myer in Australia. I visited there website and found that they actually deliver to Australia. I was wondering what if I purchase a US address and get it sent there then sent back to Australia. The prices seem pretty good at $7 monthly for service fees and delivery fees are separate. I have looked at a few websites and this website has stood out the most to me and the reviews on whirlpool and other websites seem to praise it a lot. If I do purchase a US address, I would most likely be purchasing a lot of other things as well as my daughter is obsessed with makeup and makeup in America seems a bit cheaper even with the tax and shipping included.
I am just wondering if I do purchase a US address, does that mean I can also enter comps in the USA and get it sent to Australia (understanding that I will have to pay shipping)

  • It all depends on the store, but since the prize redemption phase is separate from the spending phase, I don't think they will prevent you from purchasing and shipping to Australia at your own cost. It could be a gift to an Australian friend, how would they know, or even care?

Why would you need an American address when they ship to Aus? As above, the company behind the competition won't care

Be careful when entering American competitions, it may not be worth it in the long-run. If you won a major, you wouldn't be able to claim it as you wouldn't have ID to match your address. Not to mention that you may end up having random letters sent to your MYUS address, and they'll charge you to send them over, so it will cost you to receive advertising!

    • ^ This. It could be just a scam to get your details. An "instant win" on the interweb always is potentially shady.

  • Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions! I have decided to not go for the US address and enter the US comps as it's too complicated and not worth the time and like some comments here, it could be a scam and I would not have known and wouldn't have been able to to do anything! Thank you for all your help!

    • I would think you would be banned from entering most US based competitions anyway since they usually put a clause in the terms and conditions that state you must be a resident.

That and I'm not sure it would work anyway since the US address system seems to be for purchases from stores mainly.

For arguments sake if you did actually enter a competition and won something large like a TV and it did happen to get delivered to the US address what would stop an employee swiping it and not forwarding it on.

In the past when I've won competitions some of them have just appeared at the door and I didn't even know I'd won anything.

  • thats a lot of work and expense for a $50 voucher.

Yes but I was also planning on using the US address for future US competitions and future purchases if needed

      • Please read the T&Cs. The majority of these sweepstakes require the winner to be US citizens, not just having a US address. I believe you will probably need to give them your US social security number to claim larger prizes

Heck, you can just go and apply for a address from Shopmate (Australia post's US Forwarding service) for free (no ongoing or set up costs) and enter to your hearts content.
