Phone under $500 - Must Have Decent Camera

Wife needs a new phone as her HTC M7 battery is becoming problematic. I have the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and love it, but the camera is pretty average, especially in low light. Its the one thing that would stop me getting it for her as she takes more photos and would find the lack of quality frustrating.

The LG G4 seems to be a good fit with decent specs and an apparently very good camera. Am currently being offered a 6 month old one for $370 which is tempting.

Any other suggestions?

You might be able to snag a moto x style for about $400-$500 from ebay. If you're lucky you might get it cheaper.

    • I've got one, great phone and camera for the price.
I'm wanting to sell mine, have upgraded.

Be wary of G4 as it has bootloop issue. Been discussed here, can't find a link, but I think models built Sep 2015 and prior are particularly susceptible.

The Nexus 5X has a very good camera and is less than $400.

  • id go for the g4 as its very solid all round, moreso if that 6 month old one is aussie stock. Or an x style if u can get it as cheap (the speakers are awesome on that). 5x is okay too but I imagine it would have a less stable camera than something with OIS like the g4.

The old stock are particularly VERY likely to bootloop. Just a matter of time only.

Maybe the seller already knows this and is just trying to offload it onto you.

    Personally I wouldn't buy it.

Even some of the newer builds are still susceptible to bootloop.

    • Asked seller and apparently bought from Taiwan on ebay. Will give it a miss I think.

      • Yeah give it a miss man. You'll just end up regretting it a few months later when it bootloops itself.

I'm also looking for a phone for my missus. She's currently got a Samsung Note 2…

was also looking at the LG G4. She loves it. Looks great. Good screen. Excellent camera but that bootloop problem…

        yeah think we'll avoid that.

At the moment we're looking at the Samsung Note 5… which is currently $700. A bit pricey but I expect it to drop in price by August when the Samsung Note 7 (yep they named it 7 not 6) is released.

  • HTC M8 (good camera for low light)

Samsung Galaxy S6 (good overall camera)

    • Was thinking about the M8. Available pretty cheaply these days and given she's had the M7 no learning curve to use it.

Low light performance of the HTC M8's camera is actually pathetic(I actually have M8).
Still, overall it is a decent phone. I wish the battery would last longer, but it is managable.

Especially given a fact that M8 is not $200 on Ebay, it is highly recommended to get M8.

  • OP, your PM is off it seems… I actually might have something to offer.

    • didn't even realise that. On now, I think.

  • I'll sell you my m8 for $200.
