Online PC player count is pretty low sadly :( and since EA execs announced battlefront sequel next year; I would hope this would go down in price a bit more

Yep, current global 24h peak on PC is 4,448 players - source
      (XBONE 14,447; PS4 23,027)

For contrast: Battlefield 4 24h peak on PC is 29,733. And BF4 is more than 2 years older than BattleFront! Source

    • The next Battlefront probably won't release until end of 2017, to coincide with Episode VIII.

I would definitely try the 4 hour trail before purchasing, it's the sort of game you either love or hate as it is very squarely aimed at the casual gamer market.
Also keep in mind that they are already working on Battlefront 2 so expect the matchmaking player base to get even smaller when that is released in the not so distant future and the fact that you may also need to buy the DLC for the current one if you want to be able to find other players.

As much as I wouldn't mind getting this game, I flat out refuse to buy anything from EA ever again. They are the epitome of corporate greed.

  • So tempting to get it now. At this price, it's not a hard choice although I'll still try the 4 hour before purchase.

    • I agree it's tempting, but do keep in mind my comment above regarding player counts. My guess is that at certain times you may struggle to even get into a game. I'd say definitely check the trial during a time of day that you're likely to want to be playing.

There's not a lot of single player stuff to do if you can't find an online game…

      • Yes it's supposely great when you can get enough players. For just playing a FPS in the Star Wars environment is enough to take a gamble.
Sadly instead of fixing this game, they are going to ditch it and make part 2.

    • do they offer a trial for 4h? Not sure if I could download it in that amount of time though.

      • +2

The trial is for 4hrs of gameplay so you download it then play when ever you want, once you've used up your 4 hours of playtime the trial ends (you can play multiple sessions, you don't have to use it all at once)

$42 for the Battlefront season pass is a whole lot better than the $76 they want for it on PS4! The map DLC model really doesn't work in our market - we pay more than other countries, despite the fact that our market is too small to actually populate DLC servers.

    • The other issue is that the actual standalone version is way too barebones. All the stuff in the DLC should have been included at launch.

As much as I like this game, it is made for online play and it is impossible to get a match some days. There are some modes which I have never been able to play as it seems they are not popular enough to attract players (catch 22 - not enough players = no one plays it = not enough players).
EA should look at the World of Tanks model. Base game is free to play, but with in game purchases. Huge online player base.

The game is too casual. Not enough meaningful progression, customisation or "unique fun" factor. It's the type of you game you come to play for 1-2hrs to take a load off after work. The maps are certainly amazing in terms of graphics but it's not a game you end up playing for hours on end and forget what time it is.

Adding a story campaign, space battles(imagine instant transitioning from land to space as well) & adding a range of vehicles could have made it a lot better.

I've played it before and I have it on the PS4. So I got the trial last night. Overall the game is very fun to play, but there is a big issue with numbers. For the first 20-30 mins I could only find 12 player games, and I really wanted to play the full 40 one. After another 20 mins I finally got into a 40 player one (seems there was only one 40 player server up and it was full at the time.) So at least I know for next time to keep searching the 40 player until I get in.

Will I spend the money on it? At this point, no. There's simply not enough players. One game mode doesn't entertain me long enough, especially when a few people leave at the server becomes horribly imbalanced.

    • Update to this: tested it over the weekend and last night - ending up buying. I really do enjoy the game, and if you search long enough you do find the game usually.

Tip 1: you can change the region if you're desperate for a game
Tip 2: there is no server browser or queue, so if you can't find a game, it could be that there is one currently full - wait a few minutes and try again.

Tip 2 worked for me numerous times.

$27 is not a bad price. I believe it's even cheaper on Origin Mexico, if you are visiting that part of the world.

As some one who's played over 100 hours, I'd recommend trying the four hour trial first. The game has some issues, as mentioned here. Chief among them is the low player count. Forget playing all the modes. Only a couple of the most popular are playable on Aus servers at peak times these days. (DLC/Premium servers are even worse for players). The lack of any sort of team shuffling is also disappointing. Most matches are very one-sided.

However it's an immersive Star Wars experience, and graphically very impressive.
