$300 JB Gift Card - What heating should I get?

Hey guys,

So i have a $500 JB gift card with $300 left. My home is freezing cold and I'm going to have to install new batts but I'm waiting to do that together with the rest of my renovation plans. I dont have a heater in the room and I freeze to death each night and when I wake up. My previous rented home had reverse cycle heating so I never bought a heater before in my life. I was wondering what's a good heater to buy from JB. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/whitegoods-appliances/heating-cool…

I'm don't have a clue whats better in terms of heating type (ceramic vs. conventional vs. radiant), and whether going for the highest W is the smarter choice.

So help a brother out Ozbargainers? Should I be looking elsewhere for a heater? I heard heaters dont usually have a long lifespan either.

Thanks!

  • I hated fan/ceramic and convection heater. Fan dries the skin out and convection is slow when you need an instant cold relief. In the past years I've loved my radiant heater. Its perfect especially just as you come out of shower.. or to warm up the jeans in the morning before you put them on :P

My heater has last me 5 years and it still is going strong. Can't remember the brand but its one of the reputable one (I think whirlpool?). W is dependant on your room size. But I think 2000kW is enough for a medium sized bedroom. For a large living room maybe a gas heater is preferable if there's a gas point.

  • All the thermal electric heaters cost much the same to run (reverse ac being the exception).
If it is for your bedroom when you awake the best will be a cheap fan heater that can quickly warm you and the air. Just turn it off after a little while when it has taken the chill off.
If you are cold in your bed, you really need a better doona/blankets and a hot water bottle or electric blanket.
Heating the room while you are insulated under blankets will be costly and ineffective.
A good rule of thumb is a 2000w heater costs 50c per hour to run.

    • Yes, I second this. Get an electric blanket. Really handy after you showered and get changed, and want to jump in a warm bed.

    • Thanks for the info, and the rule of thumb. Not something I knew before.

Got myself a fan heater today with a timer to start an hour before i wake up, while I'll get a electric blanket soon for when i go to bed.

      Perfect sleeps! Thanks all!

      • I don't reckon an electric blanket is necessary, just make sure you have enough blankets/covers to keep warm. Nice warm shower, jump into bed and a few minutes of cold sheets and you are back to warm again. Then again it takes meow than a few minutes for me to really feel the cold. My wife uses heat packs heated in the microwave for pre warming the bed.

I wouldn't set a fan heater in a closed bedroom an hour before you get up, it should only take 10min to take the chill off the room.

  • think about a reverse cycle air con - yes more than the $300 but then you'll be cool next summer as well.

  • I'd suggest flannelette (spellin') sheets and a fan heater, with a timer so you don't overspend on the heater.

Good way of thinking about the cost is to work out how much you pay per kW/hr and so you can think if I have the heater on for an hour it'll be $.xx, or whatever.

So, you can I guess sit back and think, well if I have this on for four hours it'll cost me over a $1 to run.
