Best Way to Return Online Shopping Clothing/Footwear Items?

Hi all - I’m a first time poster (I browse OzBargain deals daily), but felt compelled to post after a recent experience returning something I purchased online through Missguided.

After deciding that I was going to return a dress and pair of shoes that didn’t fit correctly, I had to go through the annoying task of finding time to take everything into the Post Office, choose packaging, package the item and then line up to pay for it over the counter. This process took at least 30 minutes up of my lunchtime and detracted away from the reason I purchased online in the first place (for convenience).

Interested to hear from everyone about their similar experiences. Most places that I use to shop for dresses don't offer free returns (Boohoo, Showpo, St Frock) and you can't find the item in-store so I have to buy it there.

Surely there is a simpler way to return something that is less time consuming and pricey?! Have any of you had any great returns experiences? What about bad ones that I should avoid?

Thanks!

  • why not use the original packaging?

You have to rip open the satchels they give you so you can't re-use them unfortunately. The next best bet is using Aus Post Prepaid packaging that is anywhere between $8-$14 which doesn't seem worth it.

You can't cut it nicely first, then tape it up if you need to return it? Stick the address labels over their labels. The packaging part should not take more than 10mins, unless you're using your mouth.

As for lining up at the post office, boo hoo

  • They don't HAVE to take back the returns if there isn't anything actually wrong with the items. As such, a business is unlikely to go out of their way (and lose money doing so) to make returning for change of name reasons easier.

I buy a fair bit of stuff from The Iconic and ASOS and both offer hassle free returns. Just print off the label and stick it back on the satchel and take it to the post office. Don't have to pay for postage!

Don't have to pay for postage!

there is no such thing as free shipping. The customer pays it one way or another.

I tend to re-use the satchels that a lot of the online stores send things by.
Just make sure you cut open the satchel nicely, and if you're bothered, you can turn the bag inside out, so it looks like a normal black satchel.
Then just add heaps of tape all the way around and slap that return sticker on.

    • I didn't even think of this! I didn't realise that you could re-use it (unless it specifically said you could like The Iconic). Thank you!

      • yep, did it for iconic and surfstitch, no problems with either.

Yep I re-use the satchels and turn the bags inside out too, and use LOTS of tape haha.

PayPal offers reimbursement of return postage costs if you paid for your online order through PayPal.

They will cover up to 8 returns per year, $45 for each return postage cost.

I've done it 4 times this year :)
