Do chickpeas need to be cooked?

Do chickpeas need to be cooked? If I soak them in water for a couple of hours they become crunchy with a nice flavour. Are there any health reasons for cooking them or can I eat them soaked?

chickpeas can be eaten raw… if you have nothing else to do. They would be tough to eat.

They don't need to be soaked if you are going to bake or roast them in an oven.

If you want them to be soft you'd need to soak them for an hour or more.

  • better to cok/heat treat themm first to get rid of any bacteria. Chick peas from imported from foreign countries may be dried outside on the side of the road. somtimes even pissed on by cats.. consume with caution.

if tinned, no. If dried beans, soaked at least. Make Hummus with them.

  • I usually boil them for 10 mins or so to remove any bacteria - would recommend doing the same.

The name chickpeas suggest they are peas coming from chicken.

Since chicken can't be eaten raw therefore chickpeas can't be eaten raw.

    Thanks Tom.

The name chickpeas suggest that chicks come from peas. Since peas can be eaten raw, chickens can be too.

What are we talking about? Chickpeas? What are they?

So the big question is.. Which came first, the chicken or the pea?

Also only buy free range chickpeas. If you're buying caged you're supporting cruel farming practices.

If they aren't cooked you'll get quite flatulent if you have a meal of them - cause your body has to do more work breaking them down.

    They'll taste quite "beany" too.

No, they need to be soaked.
