I know it's a great freebie for the price, but this device has scored lot of negative feedback on it's screen quality, camera quality and very sluggish performance

    • +4

      I've read up on http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Huawei-MediaPad-10-Link-…

      I wouldn't have 2016 demands for a 2013 device…

    • +2

Thats would have been when priced at hundreds of dollars. It is an old model, but could be good for home.
I'm sure the IPS screen is fine indoors, and you don't need the latest SoC for games.

Must check what the modem fetches on eBay :-)

  • I was interested until determining the MediaPad 10 "Link" is a 2yo+ screen downgrade of the FHD version, (which itself will be 4yo this year). It's probably a decent value bundle though.

  • A free tablet for this $129 device? And hidden cost? Thanks.

Well, did not read it is mediapad 10 LINK, not the FHD mediapad 10…

  • +3

It's a fairly basic tablet, but would be good for kids.

  • Would the tablet be ok for chromecasting ?

I'd only be using it for that. Only ask because I did have an old laptop that didn't have enough grunt for it, and this being a bit old I was worried maybe I'd get the same stuttering ??

    • That makes no sense.
The way chromecast normally works is that your phone or tablet sets up a connection, and the source streams direct to the Chromecast device.
You can turn off your Android device, and the movie keeps playing.

If you get stuttering, it is more likely the crappy wifi on the Chromecast v1.

What are you trying to do?

      • Just a guess, but it seems like @redcreek200's TV is not positioned near the Wifi router.

        • A lot of people have trouble with the Chromecast wifi.
Putting it on a longer extension cable, away from the TV, can help. I have an OTG USB ethernet adapter on mine, as the parts were lying around.

        • @manic: True, it shouldn't be too close or there could be too much noise. That overly strong signal could even damage the devices. But too close would be around 1 metre or less away.

        • @twocsies:
None of the other devices have any wifi problem in the same place - bluray, ATV, Kodi box, …

      • @manic, chromecast is for a dumb tv in another room. wifi signal is strong as I can chromecast from here using my android phone.

Same chromecast dongle but using an old laptop, the video stutters. But without chromecast and same location, laptop can play the videos over wifi.

This same laptop also stutters when I stream mlb despite perfect wifi. So something to do with the laptop's processing ability. laptop was running windows 7 starter - maybe that and not processing ability ??

Anyway, that's why I asked about the tablet here :)

        • +1

Same chromecast dongle but using an old laptop, the video stutters.

If you mean you used the old laptop to cast something to the dumb tv in another room, and the video shutters, I don't see how it is a problem with the old laptop. The old laptop just send command to cast, after that you can totally turn off the old laptop or use the hammer to slash it into pieces, it won't affect the video playing on the dumb tv.

        • @wildstone:
I was chromecasting thru Chrome on the laptop. Going off memory, the stream continued within chrome on the laptop as it went to the tv. ie. I could see it stuttering on the laptop AND the tv at the samr time. Unless I'm going nuts, that is my memory :)

But not to worry. I'll just assume there'll be no similar issues with the tablet.

        • @redcreek200:
I see. Using Chrome to play video is a bad idea. Tell us the source, and we can suggest an alternative.

        • @manic:
Thanks @manic. sbsondemand android app doesn't seem to support chromecasting. All the other stuff I've figured out the chromecasting (use plex for videos from the pc and abc iview app which supports casting)

But clueless how to cast (easily) "sbs on demand". I resorted to a cheap android tv box for the wife because of this. I'd prefer to junk this .. for support reasons :) So if I can cast sbsondemand that would be great.

        • @redcreek200: newer versions of Android allow you to cast your whole screen. That works for me but unfortunately doesn't seem like this tablet supports it.

        • @poop:
Thanks for the info @poop. Best I skip this one.

Interesting. Basically a big 10" version of the original Ascend Mate 6". Good deal if you are in need of a high end pocket WIFI.

    • Very similar devices. Some minor differences. CPU is clocked a little lower, and it has 1G RAM (Ascend Mate has 2GB). Supports LTE (but Ascend Mate only does 3G). The bad part of the 10" is ~149 ppi pixel density (versus Ascend Mate's ~241 ppi pixel density)
      http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5237&idPhone2=…

I can't understand this pairing. The Mediapad 10 Link has a SIM slot and supports LTE. You don't need the 4G router with this device!

      • +3

Actually the Aussie version of the Ascend Mate is the same deal - 1/2 the RAM and 1/2 the storage (1GB/8GB). I presume the overseas versions will be the same too (double the specs).

    • You know.. I'm not sure if they decided to update Android past 4.1 on this device much like the Ascend Mate. If that is the case, then it will forever be stuck on that version. Considering the latest software does require 4.4 or even 5 and above. Not that sure about it

  • What about the Telstra 4GX Wi-Fi Advanced II unit itself? Has anyone had any experience with it? I have a few domestic and international trips coming up and wouldn't mind something like this.

    • +1

It is actually really good device. I have (for work) the Advanced II and III. The real differences between them are probably negligible on WIFI during the day since you're sharing the network with just about everyone else out there. If you are off peak and have a line of sight, then it will make a difference. Unless you want to beat that Douche with the "Look I downloaded 1TB in the Telstra free day", then this device is good enough.

      • Awesome. Thanks for that!

  • Whats the difference between the Advanced II and III?

    • +21

      I

      • +2

        Literally lol-ed.

    • II is a cat 6 device, III is cat 11. Much, much faster speeds essentially (up to 600mbps vs 100mbps), more than any current phone out there.

      • The Samsung S7 has CAT 6 in it so this is only matching the S7.

    • If you are after a gloating speed record, then you will need to use the MicroUSB 3.0 cable with it to your PC (WIFI wont get as much), point it to a cell tower within 100m with a direct line of sight to the panels in total offpeak times. You might be able to reach the theoretical limit then.

Otherwise.. practical uses in real terms is the same.

  • It might be a bit of bastard child to get unlock, worth checking before buying

    • Much cheaper after 6 months, asnd free after two years.

  • +1

    Specs are very average.

    • +6

      Price is very free

      • -1

Free if you were planning on spending $129 on a glorified hotspot, otherwise you need to take into account that cost.

  • +1

None of the comments are helpful. Is it worth for the money?

    • Do you need a Telstra PP 4GX Wi-Fi Advanced II?

      • I need a Huawei Mediapad 10 Link Tablet.

        • +1

Mediapad 10 is a bonus. You wouldn't want to pay $129 for the tablet. However, it is entirely up to you.

        • @motor89: Thanks

        • +2

Its definitely cheap compared to its current outrageous overpriced RRP which is probably some unsellable stock.

About on par in price tablets you can order from china. Significantly slower GPU though. Though you get the 3G + the warranty on a $130 device.

Specs are pretty crappy so that even if you wanted to live in 2013, it would have problems with graphic intensive games.

So probably woudnt give this to the kids. Unless they happen to like puzzle games.

Probably a good tablet for the pet though.

    • +1

Typical Aussie depression. Just like Whirlpool.

    • Personally, I would not get a 10" device that's not got at least 2GB RAM, 32GB, full HD.

For $129, I think the device is worth the price. Even though it's old and lacking in specs, I'm surprised to see it available for less than $200. You can play Candy Crush or browse the Internet on this device. Personally I would not like to read much on this device because the pixel resolution is not crisp at all.

      • -1

The resolution is fine. This tablet is 1280 x 800 pixels and has about 149 ppi(Pixels Per Inch). 40" Full HDTV is only 55.07 ppi and hardly anyone compains about it. Again, 27" 4K UHD monitor is only 163.18 ppi and people pay "premium".for the monitor.

        • I used to think so too but when I saw the difference for a tablet I couldn't go back. I have had low res tablets and I have had full HD tablets. Personally I have a Huawei Mediapad X2 and it's awesome. The text is extremely clear and I like reading on it.

I think the difference is how close to view the device. I'd view a monitor from more than a metre, but reading would be 30 cm. If you want to read on the low res device, maybe you could make the text larger and it would be fine. But because of the viewing distance, I think that a 27" monitor is not a good comparison.

    • short answer for you - NO
Don't even bother with 1GB RAM tablet, it is next to buying rubbish.

  • Hmm. I want the modem but the tablet is utterly useless to me. Damn.

  • How would this go with Chromecast? Can you use cast screen on this huawei version of jelly bean?

    • Casting works with Kit-kat and higher. Huawei would probably have to deliberately cripple it out for it not to work. The tablet is miracast compliment so there is absolutely no reason it shouldn't work.

      • So I guess not then? Looks like they stopped at jelly bean?

        • Yep, chromecasting only rather than mirroring - and I've had success mirroring i-view from a decent specced lappy via chromecast, [as in using mirror in the browser] but using the in-app 'cast' function like a Kit-kat unit would have to sucks cess.

  • +1

Bugger - I bought the 4GX Wifi Advanced II last week for $129 when it dropped to $129 from $149 - would have been worth waiting a week for a free tablet! :-(

  • I bought Telstra Pre-Paid 4GX Wi-Fi Advanced II last week from Telstra shop for $149

  • I m more interested in the 4G modem, and the tablet can use as a photo-frame lol

I read that the Avd 1 and 2 model has issues, they were replaced quickly by 3 series and this whole thing looked like Hellstra is looking to flock off stock in their warehouse

I got Hellstra 4G on ipad but
I am currently using vodafail hotspot but wonder if the modem can be unlocked to run all aussie sims

  • +2

Two outdated pieces of tech for the one bundle price.

  • Any suggestion on how to unlock these modems? I called Telstra customer service, they asked $80 to unlock it

    • +1
      1. Download and install Netgear Aircard app on your mobile phone.
      2. Connect your mobile phone's Wi-Fi to your 4GX Advanced II.
      3. Open the Netgear Aircard app, then select Network -> APN

If you're on Optus network, add connectme to the APN list, and set it to default.
If you're on Telstra network, add telstra.internet to the APN list, and set it to default.
If you're on Vodafone network, add live.vodafone.com to the APN list, and set it to default.

      Voilà, you're ready to go.

      • So its not network locked ….

        • The original APN set up by Telstra will prompt you to signup/register. Once you change the default APN to an appropriate one, no more nagging.

        • @O O: Hmmn … so the modem is not network locked … if the mediapad is also not locked, it becomes a pretty attractive proposition.

      • So with these steps, if I am abroad, can I used different SIM ?… considering telstra.internet is the APN list

      • Whered you get this info from? Thats how you add APNs but the device is still locked to Telstra.

      • Just received it today and its locked. Manually setting the APN doesn't help

  • +2

As far as the Telstra modem goes it's great. My where I use it has terrible reception - had Vodafone 4g modem before and very slow, switched to Telstra and this 4gx modem and it flies.

  • can anyone confirm whether the modem is locked or unlocked?

  • Ah to heck with it. Didn't need either but probably can find a use for them. Can use the 5gb of WiFi next family hols, and the tablet as a chopping board. Thanks OP. ;-)

i just received the order no mediapad but
when chatting to customer rep. its june 2014. not 14 june 2016

    its big fraud

how can i get my money back

    • Thanks! Courier just arrived, pack had modem, no tablet, so I refused to accept delivery.
      Now to chase refund :-(
Livechat not working. Just sits there "connecting" with spinning wait icon.
      Reply to their email …

      Hi there,
      Thanks for your email.

This mailbox isn’t monitored so the message you just sent won’t get to us.
But don’t worry, there are still lots of ways to get in touch.

Now I'm mad. How many contact attempts before I can ask the bank to do a chargeback?

    • Same for me. But I got a different response from a customer rep.

Thanks. I can see the order where it says that the 4G device and the gift has been dispatched. What I will do to help you is to submit a report to a case manager about the missing Huawei media pad 10 that should be included on the delivery. They will investigate what happened. They will contact you via email within 5-7 business days about when you will receive the Huawei media pad.

    • I believe that was what you were told by some silly customer rep, but it's crap. The modem was not even released at that point.

    • lol the customer rep cant read. From the T&Cs on the site:

Gift with purchase offer: Offer is available Online Only. To be eligible to receive the gift customers must purchase the Telstra Pre-Paid 4GX Wi-Fi Advanced II. Customers will receive the gift with the delivery of the purchased device. Limited of one gift per person. Offer is subject to availability. If customers return the device, they will need to return the gift. Valid from 1 June 2016 till 14 June 2016.

The only part they can prob get you is the part about "Offer being subject to availability"

  • 10" HD IPS screen.
Tablet should be quite ok for home video, movies, youtube, iview

  • from customer rep on chat:
As per checking the website, The bonus gift(Huawei MediaPad 10) is only eligible for those who
buy a Telstra Prepaid 4 GX WiFi advanced II by June 14.

  • Check your email tax invoice, it it says Huawei MediaPad 10 Link - Gift With Purchase in the order reference section, you should be fine. Note that it might be sent separately. A great deal from Telstra. Very happy!

  • if it says Huawei

  • +1

    Had an email from Telstra:

    Hi Manic,
Thanks for your recent purchase of the Pre-Paid 4GX Wi-Fi Advanced II. Sorry! We’ve made a mistake on our end and haven’t shipped out your Bonus gift (Huawei MediaPad 10 Link) with your device.
Your gift will be shipped out to you within approximately 1-2 business days. Apologies for the delay,

So I guess the deal is back on.

Anybody else find it kind of rude when they send out emails from a noreply@telstra address? Especially personalised ones.
And no other way of connecting to the people who sent the message, somewhere deep in the Telstra megalith.

  • Same here

  • I got the same message ie mistake re not shipping the bonus gift and it will be sent in a couple of days. Given that bonus deal was "while stocks last" I'm happy that they are actually going to send it rather than a 'sorry - we ran out' message I was almost expecting….

    • The "while stocks last" means the offer may end at any time.
It does not mean they can keep your money and say "sorry you missed out".
Fortunately, Australian consumer law trumps Telstra's fine print.
Of course, don't expect the overseas call centres to know that.

      • That was more my concern - spending an afternoon talking to a call centre trying to explain how I want my money back because I didn't get the bonus tablet….

  • Hey guys how is the 4GX Device?? Keen to know how it performs :)

    • Its really good for me so far. Excellent battery life and shuts down wifi when your not using it to save battery. I left it on for about 18 hours without using it and the battery didn't drop a percent. The screen is really handy too, knowing how much data you have left.

Top speed I have has so for is about 50mbps downloads, but obviously depends on network congestion. Right now I'm getting about 18mbps which is still decent.

  • So both arrived. Tablet is running 4.1.2

    • Can it be updated?

      • Looks like the Tablet is the 8GB Wifi Only version (Huawei S10-201wa)

        • No Cellular / LTE? That sucks then..

      • I dont think so. I tried to look for a reliable site for Kitkat 4.4 or Lollipop 5.x ROMs and cannot find it (same as the Original 6" Ascend Mate). This was one reason why I lost trust in Huawei products since they have very little to no aftersales. Might be some 3rd party ROM or Cyanogen that may help.

  • Has anyone checked it's already unlocked ore not?

    • It's locked

  • I got the email saying that they sent my modem out without the free tablet by mistake and that it will be sent in 1 to 2 business days. Then Strar Track arrived with my package. It includes the tablet but no modem. WTF. Travelling beautiful as usual Telstra. I wonder what I will get in a few days.

    • Ok received my modem this morning. No extra tablet like kewell. Oh well.

  • Same here got the tablet but no modem.

  • +1

OK sooo modem just arrived with another tablet! Yep they've sent me two.

  • First delivery was Friday after hour (5:30pm), the package got returned to Telstra. After follow up, the second delivery came with modem only, no tablet. My initial order email from Telstra has bonus tablet written in black and white. NOT happy!
