Bargain stock ettiquette

I must confess that I am a materialistic workaholic / shopaholic and recently, as I foray into being a more adventurous cook at home, I have come to find grocery shopping particularly enjoyable.

Cutting to the chase… I was at Coles the other day and noticed a good deal on their nappies, $13 for a 96 pack or whatever and there were 2 boxes left and 3 smaller 48 packs for $5.

Naturally I took them all and made a nice Egyptian inspired pyramid in my shallow trolley. However, as I carried on wandering the aisles, I started to feel a little guilty that I didn't leave any for anyone else.

Now in this particular case, the sale had been on for a few days and the sign said "reduced to clear" so i justified it enough to myself but it did get me thinking -

Is there a bargain etiquette when it comes to shopping?
Do you take it all or only what you need?
And follow up question- what do you bulk buy?

    You snooze, you lose.

That's what "Limit per Customer" is for. If it doesn't have it, and you can use it, buy it :)

And follow up question- what do you bulk buy?

TP, cooking oil, stuff I know I will need in the next few months-years depending on the quoted expiry date, and non-perishable goods if it's on special.

The only two things that should control your shopping quantities are:

    • how many you logically think that you'll need, and
    • the limitations of the retailer.

The number of anything that you purchase should be the lesser of the two quantities above.

Other than that, everything is fair game.

    • Or in brodens' case…can I resell this.😁

      • Lol. Broden was before your time.

        • He's in the archives some where.
Plus never know how long someone's been using ozb and hadn't created an account.

        • Lol. Lets not talk about anyone who died before we were born because that was before our time.

        • @lkp: Alright, no need to be grim. Was just having a bit of fun.

They are reduced to clear. It is not your fault nobody else wanted them. At Christmas, my local Coles overstocked with Pannetone (900g size). You can depend on the inevitable, so I waited until they were $2.50 and purchased 20 of the Baroni Italian variety (dated 28 June 2016). The next week, the Ital Australian variety came down to $1.50 so I added 11 of those to the top of the Pannetone tower leaning against the fridge. I would have bought more, but these were dated 28 April 2016. I am certain the two varieties taste the same. Five Baroni remain (2 with chocolate chips). Guess what I'm having for breakfast.

When I posted www.ozbargain.com.au/node/234154 I regretted - and still regret - not returning a third day in order to fill my www.ozbargain.com.au/node/176733 spinner case, though I still have a few kilos stored in the tins of those Desobry biscuits.

Unless you're buying milk powder to send elsewhere or you're buying it all and planning to resell for profit, buy whatever you like imo

I agree. If for your consumption/use. Swing for the rafters and take it all. To resell for a profit. Please dont.

Caramelised onion shapes were selling for 50cents a box at my local WW 2 days ago. Guess who has 12 boxes stacked on top of the kitchen cupboard.

Just before Christmas - Kleenex aloevera twin pack toilet paper for 50cents. Bought all 96. 30 went to my parents, 30 to my sister in law, 36 to my father in law. they weren't Christmas presents

If clearance stock is short dated and you buy more than you can use then that is greed.

But there is a component of "you snooze, you lose"

Oooh. Were they nice? I'm guessing clearance so I will never know the taste :(

very nice. perfect as a dipping biscuit for aldi hummus.

        • Do you go the fancy one with the olive oil and pine nuts? Or the $1.79 one :)

          @tomsco: $1.79. absolutely delicious.

The shop drops the price to get rid of stuff they don't want to stock anymore. Someone has to buy it, so why shouldn't you if you can use it.

As for reselling for profit that's how the reject shop got started isn't it?

    Personal use, Go for it.

Reselling and capitalising on it, that is a NO NO!
