OzBargain 2016 EoFY Charity Donations - $16,000 to Charities of Your Choice!

Update 13 June 2016 — thanks everyone who participated in the poll. The result is out, and these 4 charities will receive donations from OzBargain at the end of the financial year.

  • Cancer Council Australia (receipt)
  • RSPCA (receipt)
  • Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders)

tl;dr — OzBargain is giving $16,000 to charities this June. The top 4 charities voted by our members will get $4,000 each.

Yes we have been doing this for the past 4 years (see our charity donations page). For End of Financial Year 2016, OzBargain will give $16,000 to 4 charities that our members have voted for ($4,000 each). To make choosing a charity easier, I am selecting the list from the top 15 charities voted by our members in our 2015 Christmas donation. They are

It does appear that many charities previously voted by OzBargainers are medical related. I am happy to add another 2 or 3 charities to the list that are welfare related. Put that in the comments and I will add them later today.

The poll will run for 7 days so we should hopefully get a list of winning charities by Monday next week. I am also hiding the vote result this time until the poll expires next Monday. Once we have 4 winning charities, OzBargain will make donation before the end of June.

    I've gotta vote for beyondblue as mental health is often overlooked and people still consider it very taboo or even shameful to admit to it. Particularly if you're receiving treatment from a psychologist etc.

    Some people would agree that the federal government's changes to mental health will make it harder for people to access the help they need.

    It doesn't help when doctors and nurses don't understand it either. They don't understand why people self harm or have suicide attempts/ideation and think it's a waste of time. Making it a lot worse for the victim.

    Organisations like Headspace are losing their funding and are struggling to keep ontop of the increasing number of people.

    Just my 2 cents.

          Lol perhaps. I just meant the ice bucket challenge has raised awareness but I'm not sure that it is very common.

          I don't know anyone with mnd but when you look at conditions the charities above cover they are common conditions that have affected people I know. The only exception is sids but it affects kids and you may not hear about it

          Also malaria but it is a big problem in other parts of the world.

          @Gimli: one of my friends has MND, diagnosed at 30. It's horrible to watch him slowly lose his ability to do things. Especially because he has a young family.

    Great initiative.

    Could you consider Captivating as a charity? It is run by an enterprising Australian family who migrated to China to run very successful sustainable development projects for poor people in China and the region. I have been supporting this charity for some time because I admire their hands-on, sustainable approach.
    Donations are handled through International Children's Care Australia (Registered Australian Charity).

    I prefer animal charities and its sad to see only one on the list. People will vote out of self interest for things that affect them or someone they know. I prefer to vote for those that can't stand up for themselves.

      TBH it is probably better otherwise you risk votes being split for different animal charities.

      But the debate between human vs animals will always go on. The reality both need it and we need to waste less money on other things.

      I find it hard to understand a worldview where the well being of humans is considered on par with animals. How can we devote resources to help animals when human beings are dying from preventable diseases/hunger worldwide? Should we not assist our own species first? In my mind human beings have far more inherent value than any other species.

        animals were here well before humans, humans change their world and attempt to include too few animals in it. how can we devote resources to help humans beings when animals are dying from preventable diseases\hunger\loss of homes\abuse worldwide? should we not assist those most in need first?
        i value the lives and companionship far more than other humans i have encountered.

    Can I offer an opposing point of view to DCO90 - I thought at this point in the evolution timeline we humans were finally developing some insight into the value of all life. The fact that we are not better than another species - simply different. We are all intrinsically linked to each other for survival. So, animal welfare is deserved of sponsorship. Compassion is boundless!

    Doctors without borders has experienced some horrible events in the past year, they need all the help they can get. The selflessness of the people willing to go into war zones to treat those in need of medical aid just astounds me.

    That said, all of the charities you have listed are well deserving of funding, and thank you for being so generous as to donate such an amount each year. Ozbargain is a great community of tightarses!

    I recently read a book by Peter Singer about effective altruism, and managed to find a video summarising it's principles.

    I thought you and other ozbargainers might find the insights interest as its consistent with some of what motivates us as bargain hunters, but in relation to charities. How does my contribution have the most impact? It's worth a watch as it raises some interesting questions.

    I have been donating to Compassion for over 6 years now.
    I've flown through South East Asia a few times to help on their projects and seen exactly how the money is used.
    Couldn't be more deserving of my vote.

    Another "Onya" for doing this. Lots of good charities here. Personally, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Compassion & Drs without borders stand out for me. Don't know much about the Against Malaria Foundation - but that's a huge issue.

        Got spammed :)

        I am basically getting more call for donation mails (yes actually physical mail) every other week.

        I did have one or two thank you calls in the past. Also some free pens from Cancer Council.
