Looking for a cheap low usage VoIP plan to replace Pennytel

There's not much time left of the Pennytel service. I don't make a lot of calls, and am looking for a replacement VoIP service. Currently I spend a couple of dollars or so per month.

The default option for Pennytel users is MNF, but it looks like calls to mobiles are expensive. I was looking at the Telecube Whirlpool offer https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2531073, but timed domestic calls seem expensive.

Can anybody make any recommendations? I don't mind a non-Australian provider (within reason) if it makes sense.

  • Google voice?

  • Telecube is pretty good. Untimed calls worked out cheaper for me anyway.

    • +1

Telecube will have $5/mth min soon.
SipTalk is cheaper & runs on & by Telecube https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2543401
      Mobiles: 6.6c per minute
Fixed lines 1.65c per minute or 7.7c per call
      1300/13 22c per call

Free calls & Credit transfers between Siptalk & Telecube

Transfer credit from Telecube or add credit then you can activate the WP discounted rates with one of the links from WP either timed or untimed, can be changed after 14 days if need be.

      • Nice, didn't know about this one, but I guess it's a brand new offer as of 5 days ago.

  • Maxotel have a whirlpool plan, just look at whirlpool for details

    • Thanks, but Maxotel's probably not for me as the $5 per month plan cost exceeds my current spend including calls.

      • Then have you looked at the Whirlpool plans.

        www.whirlpool.net.au

MNF have no monthly fee plans these are far better than their standard plans

        https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool

        or directly at MNF

        www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool

        • This is the $5/month plan I found on Whirlpool - includes a DID that I don't need.

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2383372#…

Are there other plans I've missed?

I've seen the MNF whirlpool plans, but I'm a bit disappointed that various costs are higher than the current Pennytel (in particular calls to mobile as well as international).

        • @Its4me: Go to the MYnetfone page that I gave the link to Its a free monthly plan, which if you take a DID will cost $5 a year (I dont know if this is optional)

It maybe higher than the Pennytel offer, thats a call only you can make as I dont know what exactly you spend etc. All I am doing is giving you a link to a plan that you can consider.

Just look at the right plan.

          Enjoy

  • Telecube also have fixed price calls (10c)to landlines - you can check it out on the Whirlpool forums.
You can alternate between fixed price and timed.

    • Telecube does seem tempting, only downside is the 1.87c per minute calls to landlines compared to 1.6c at the moment, which isn't a big deal based on my usage patterns.

I rarely make calls to landlines over 5 minutes 20 seconds, so the fixed price calls option doesn't really tempt me.

      • also keep in mind they have had massive outages over the last month

        • Hi, who would you recommend instead of Telecube and who is reasonably priced? Thanks

        • @Beccas:

VoIP pricing is like any phone pricing, the best deal depends on exactly how you're going to use the service. Also your technical knowledge is important, some people can run multiple VoIP connections and route outgoing calls via the cheapest path.

        • @terminal2k:

Thanks but you didn't really provide a recommendation comparable to Telecube. Assuming you basically connect the service to a VOIP phone like Telecube does, are there any comparable recommendations? Thanks

        • @Beccas:

I can't provide a recommendation if I don't know what your usage will be like.

If you're after something that has more reliability than telecube, or you're only going to be using it to receive calls, I'd go with Mynetfone.

        • @terminal2k:

Thanks terminal2k, I'll look at Mynetfone.

  • Maybe the best solution for me is to move the Pennytel services to MNF, set up a Telecube account (with fixed price calls?), try to mostly use Telecube except for calls to landlines (with less than 6.25 minutes duration if I went for fixed price), when I should use MNF, also use MNF when Telecube is down … not sure how well that will work in practice - probably end up mostly using Telecube apart from when it's down.

    • See my post below.
Telecube is soon setting a $5 min/mth but they have just started SipTalk with better rates than PennyTel, running on the same system as Telecube. So free calls between both and you can even transfer part/all credits either way (just be sure the ID is correct or cancel it quickly before it is accepted by the receiver).

  • Telecube is now $5 min/mth. However…
New SipTalk Whirlpool Offer (runs on Telecube so calls to Telecube & SipTalk numbers are free)
    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2543401
    Untimed National Calls
Calls to fixed lines 7.7c per call
Calls to mobiles: 6.6c per minute
    Offer Code: WP_SIPTALK_2_UNTIMED
Redeem at: https://manage.siptalk.com.au/myaccount/offers/?code=WP_SIPT… (need account first & logged in)

    • Why can't I edit my OP???

      13/1300 22c
(same as standard non whirlpool price)

  • I noticed siptalk is even more expensive than mynetfone on international calls to some destinations.

It seems like using a calling card may become the norm again for those who don't want to pay a $5 monthly fee/minimum spend.

The only real options now are to use betamax providers with no credit expiry and cheaper USD/EUR rates.

    • "betamax providers with no credit expiry and cheaper USD/EUR rates"

Any specific recommendations? Also reliability would be a factor to add.

  • I'm currently on a TPG internet/phone bundle - for $10 a month I get unlimited landline and mobile calls (no need for international). Is it worth the time and effort switching to a VoIP provider, or am I not really saving any extra money by changing?

    • It depends what your call volumes are like.
Some people only use a few dollars at most each month.

Edit: If you make lots of calls an unlimited mobile plan may be your best option.

  • Sorry for resurrecting an old tread. But wanted to get this discussion started again.

Does anyone have updated information about cheap VOIP service with DID numbers?

I am looking for a free or low monthly fee DID number

VOIP rates are outrageous given that the $10 Amaysim plan is offering 1GB mobile data and unlimited unlimited talk & text Standard calls, SMS and MMS to mobiles & landlines Calls to 13 & 18 numbers,
