Help. I Need Some Advice about Buying a Laptop

Hi Ozbargainers,

My parents want to buy a Windows-based laptop and I am totally out of the loop these days to help them as I'm a Mac Man… They don't want to spend more than $700 if they can help it and they'll just be using it for internet and social media plus my Mum writes, and does a little bit of video editing. They tend to hang on to computers for 4-5 years so something solid that will last would be good.

Storage, 1TB would be good…

Any ideas? What are the best brands with the best deals at the mo?

Thanks in advance!

Jon

Dell Latitude/Dell Inspiron from dell outlet.

    • Dell has 20% off on eBay.

still not cheaper than the outlet

        • Of course not, because the outlet equipment is not new: "refurbished" or "as new"; typically in excellent condition, but usually not brand new - thus a bit of lottery.

        • @derek324:

I have bought from the outlet before. More than 10 times

Swap out harddrive for an SSD and it'll fly. 1TB SSD costs $330~360 ish though, maybe consider 500GB SSD + $10 2.5" enclosure for the 1TB 5400RPM harddrive to use as an external.

Or pay an extra $49 for a new model http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-5000-Core-i5-620… with the 20%.

      • Thanks. I did look at the eBay store but didn't find one.
        My eyes not working right.

  • Thanks for the advice everyone… is it worth them stretching a little and getting a Lenovo, something like the ThinkPad E460 for $800?

    http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/deals/current-offers/laptops-fo…

Would that be better than the Dells? I think I can also get some cash back through cashrewards too on the Lenovos…

It is neither better nor worse. Build wise I think they are about the same as a Dell Inspiron, but inferior to a Dell Latitude.

You can get this for $600 delivered using the CLICK20 code, and it will serve their needs just as well… but for cheaper.

Of course, this is a 15.6 inch laptop and has 4GB RAM, the Lenovo E460 is a 14 inch with 8GB configured. Memory is cheap/ easy to upgrade tho.

Use the extra money saved and buy them a 500GB SSD (Samsung or Crucial or Intel). SSD's make a lot of difference for a relatively low $ investment.

      • Thanks for the advice. I'll look into it with them.
