Clean Windows Install + Change HDD to SSD

Hi Everyone,
I just got the Lenovo E460 and from the comments, I can see that most people recommend a clean installs of windows and to change the HDD to an SSD. Could someone please point me in the right direction on how to do both?
Side-Note: This would ruin the warranty yes?
Thanks in advance

For that you would need to swap the HDD to a SSD. Then install windows(key needed). Pop back HDD if there is an additional slot for it.

As for warranty, you'll need to check the terms. Normally there won't be an issue if you have the HDD slots for it.

    • First you would need to buy an SSD, the Sandisk Plus 240GB is a good buy for $80 right now.
    • Next, swap out the HDD for the new SSD. There are youtube tutorials available like this
    • Assuming you have a Windows licence key already, download the ISO file for your version by visiting Techbench in google chrome. Press F12, and click on the Console tab. Copy and paste the script from here into the console and hit Enter. If you did this correct, on the webpage you should be able to Select your edition of Windows and download the correct ISO file. Guide
    • Download Rufus and follow the guide here to create a bootable Windows USB. You will need an empty USB drive with at least 4GB capacity.
    • Put the USB into your laptop and start it up. Press F12 repeatedly as it boots to enter the boot device selection menu, then select your USB.
    • It should then start the Windows installation, follow the prompts and that's it.

The Windows 10 image can be downloaded on MS techbench. This is a clean image. It does not differentiate between Home or Professional version, so you can download this image and keep it on a USB stick for future installs on any kind of computer.

Swap the hdd to ssd. Install windows skipping the product key.

Turns out you dont need it as per link below.

    http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/how-view-your-prod…

You don’t need a product key to clean install Windows 10
Since Microsoft has your computer’s ‘digital signature’ from the initial upgrade it recognises the combination of components when you do a clean install and automatically activates Windows. This means you can safely skip the screen which asks for a product key at the start of the installation process.

As for the warranty being ruined. Thats a no.

  • Just clone the drives, don't need to install anything.

    • Yes but cloning the drive doesnt get rid of any bloatware the manufacturer installed in the laoptop. A clean install does.

  • Thanks everyone!

  • I just use the built in Windows system image backup, and back it up to an external HDD. Then install the SSD and restore the backup. Simple and free.
