I got this offer as well. Would the rate be the same as the 28 degrees & citibank plus?

    • +3

28 degrees are now charging you 90 cents if you use bpay to pay off your balance. So if the rates are the same, this could be a better option.

      • +5

        Until December.

      • +4

Wtf? I didn't know about this! When did they announce that?

        • +1

          2016

        • +2

@Gimli: When in 2016? Just checked my statement and I paid with BPay recently but $0.90 wasn't deducted nor was $0.90 chucked on as an extra charge on my statement..

        • +5

          @illumination:
Kicks in on July 11th 2016. It's on the credit card statement last page.

        • +1

@davicta: Looks like they're trying to push us to pay with their new "make a payment" page/feature thingo. Thanks for that

        • @davicta: Damn. So how do you pay without bpay? "payments made by mail, by direct debit or by BPAY®' to 'A payment handling fee will be charged to account, except that no fee is payable for payments made by mail, direct debit or via the Online Service Centre'."

I'll have to figure what the heck that "Online Service Centre" is.

EDIT - OK, I think I can see how. Doesn't look too bad, I just go to their website and put in my account details there, 3 days before. Seems a bit odd paying backwards that way though.

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:

It appears its under Statements > Pay My Account > you punch in bank details. They jsut want you to pay that way I guess

        • @neonlight: Pretty bizarre really for a one off payment, them being able to pull money from your account. I'd have thought that would be more trouble and more difficult than accepting a payment. I'm annoyed by the situation but I'll wait and see.

        • @Mobe1969: they can save 0.3-1% credit card merchant fee

        • @batsxs: They have to pay a merchant fee for BPay?

        • @batsxs:
I thought you cannot pay credit with credit. Maybe debit, but otherwise it simply does not work.

      • +2

Yeah as stated I wasn't aware of this either.

        • It was mentioned on my last statement. To take effect from July. Can avoid the charge by making the payment at the 28 Degrees website Online Service Centre.

        • @davedave:

Ok will check it out thanks

        • I bet the lawyers got a Gold Star for writing this one

Effective from 11th of July 2016
The terms relating to the payment handling fee will change from 'A payment handling fee will be charged
to your account each time you make a payment to your account, except that no fee is payable for
payments made by mail, by direct debit or by BPAY®'

          to

'A payment handling fee will be charged to
your account each time you make a payment to your account, except that no fee is payable for
payments made by mail, direct debit or via the Online Service Centre'.
The payment handling fees are $2.50 (in person) or $0.95 (online).
The paper statement fee is increasing from $2.00 to $2.50.

So I can send them a cheque! Time to top up the card then.

        • @supabrudda:

the stamp probably cost more… seems that 95c is unavoidable

        • @jackystudio: not if the boss is paying :-) and it'd be worth it just to annoy them. The cost of processing a cheque would cost a lot more then 95c levy they're charging.

If they'd actually do a Jetstar & publish their account details, so we can direct deposait (which is essentially what their online payment is) then I wouldn't have a problem. Latitude are just shaking the tree to get rid of low profit customers.

        • +1

          @davedave:

Can avoid the charge by making the payment at the 28 Degrees website Online Service Centre.

As long as you don't try between 10:30pm and 04:00am, because it's disabled. (Learnt by calling them.)

        • @AlexF: Thanks for that tip. I will try to remember next time I can't sleep

        • @AlexF: Every night though? I've definitely noticed they always do maintenance at night (as do most banks) but I didn't realise that it was every single night. I'm sure I've been able to login some nights..

        • +1

          @illumination:

I'm sure I've been able to login some nights..

Not login, option to pay account from bank.

      • Time to cancel my 28 degrees.

        Coles, here I come.

        • Only till end of year for currency conversion

        • +1

          @spillmill:

Yeah. It's actually the 90c bpay fee that is ticking me off. Unfounded.

        • +9

@justtoreply: Dont cut off your nose etc. Its not hard to pay via the 28Deg website, and given theer is no annual fee, why not wait untilk you find a true alternative before cancelling the 28 degrees card.

According to other posts here at ozB they have to pay Bpay for payments made to it, so they are just keeping their costs down, just like saving on postage for statements. Considering its no annual fee, and the coles card costs $10, its 7 months to end of year, that averages $1.42 per month Vs 90/95c if you must pay by Bpay.

        • +3

          Direct debit is still free.

        • +1

@RockyRaccoon: Is the Bankwest Zero Platinum MasterCard a true alternative?

        • +3

Why? 28 deg has the BEST currency conversion rates out of all the credit cards I know. I recently spent $3000 USD, after converting to AUD, I found only a $3 difference to XE.com. That's insane because you usually only get those type of rates when using specialized xfer services.

        • @RockyRaccoon:

How does the online centre work then? I don't like direct debit. So effectively 11/07 they will charge you on your credit card when you pay via Bpay from another bank account. Insane really

I believe Coles Mastercard also use the same Mastercard conversion rates no difference against 28degrees

        • @davedave:

I heard the currency conversion rates are worse on Bankwest, if someone can confirm

        • +9

          @neonlight:

I thought I'd test this one out for myself, after recently getting the Bankwest card.

A week ago I was in Switzerland and made a significant purchase. I asked for the payment to be split equally between the two credit cards. The transactions made in CHF were within 2 minutes of each other. The statement amounts in AUD were identical.

        • @gomertose: Thank you for that research!

        • +2

@neonlight: You log onto the 28 degrees site and make a payment thru their setup. It can be one off and only made each time you authorise it (by logging in each time you want to pay it). You do it within the 28 degrees website, no need to go to your bank.

Like others I was concerned, so I tried it this month so I was comfortable with it. Its not as easy as logging into my regular transaction account but its ok.

Bankwest appears to be a good alternative, and given gomertose's test in switzerland it looks as if the rate of conversion is also the same.

        • @gomertose:

Did you split between BW and 28deg?
I've only ever done transactions with BW and Citibank Plus at the same time and have always got a better rate from the Citibank card.

Perhaps it's just Mastercard's rate was a bit lower than Visa at the times I have tested this theory.

        • @bonezAU:

Yes, payment was with BW and 28d.

      • My statement shows the fee is $0.95, not $0.90.

It's not much difference, but I mention it as a curiosity in case 28 Degrees are charging varied fees to different customers.

        • Never mind. I just noticed the wiki page shows $0.95 is the standard fee.

      • not $0.95 (online)?

      • It's 95 cents not 90 cents

        • Mistype which has been pointed out several times already. Either way, it's ridiculous.

        • @jesseboy89: Thanks - yes I see now others have noted the same. Cheers!

      • so whats the best way to pay off 28 degrees?

  • +1

What % is charged on a credit card normally if buying in USD ?

  • this means you'll pay less to spend overseas!

    I still don't understand

    • +3

Say, you are buying something from overseas in USD. The card will convert USD to AUD as per MC exchange rate - https://www.mastercard.com/global/currencyconversion/ and there will be no transaction fee deducted by Coles, which would not be the case normally.

This is everyday business at 28 Degree.

      • +2

28 degrees are slipping in extra fees, best to avoid them compared to Citibank Plus or BankWest Zero MasterCard. This Coles are is good until end of December, at least get some Flybuys points out of it.

        • Interesting… Does anyone use the Citibank Plus Everyday card? How is it?
Kind of inclined to try it out as they just launched Samsung Pay with Citibank too.

        • +1

I haven't checked recently, but I recall BankWest Zero MasterCard charges an additional foreign currency conversion fee

        • +1

          @roger1505:
Citibank is pretty good. I used it last August in New Zealand. The app/website isn't the best but it is serviceable.

        • +1

          @davedave:

It's the Bankwest Zero platinum that doesn't. Also complimentary travel insurance and no annual fee.

        • +1

          @roger1505:

I got it since I'm traveling soon, but it's actually great here as well since you get 5% cashback and 3.4% interest on the associated savings account for 4 months.

        • +1

The love of the Citibank Plus is misplaced (no disrespect to you) - on the face of it it's great cos of the lack of ATM fees, but its exchange rates are significantly worse than the 28 degrees card, to the extent that it was actually better to wear the 28 degrees ATM fee (on withdrawals where the fee was $4 or more) on a trip to Singapore, Indonesia and Japan in a side-by-side comparison.

        • +1

@bloomer: I useATM Citibank Plus in Thailand 50-100 times per year and it is ALWAYS BETTER THAN THE BEST RATE available in town. Also the same or .002 cents better than XE rates. Sooo easy!

        • @peck: did you directly compare it to the MasterCard rate for BankWest zero or 28degrees though ?

        • -1

@peck: My point was the comparison to the 28 degrees Mastercard, which in side-by-side transactions was, as I clearly said before, significantly better than the Citibank.

        • @bloomer: I think you are doing it wrong bloomer

        • @chill: He is a late bloomer.

        • @bargainaus:

Of course you get the same rate between BW and 28deg,they are both Mastercard so same rate. For citi being visa you'll get whoever has a slightly better rate on the day, there's no way to argue that visas rates are going to be always better than Mastercards.

      • +1

Do different card providers exchange money at the same rates? Do they all follow the same international market values?

(i currently have a com bank travel card)

        • +1

          No.
Citibank rates include a fee of about 2% above the midmarket rate (though they don't call it a fee).
Mastercard's rates are only about 0.5% above the midmarket rate.

        • @Dacs: Where did you get this info from? So if the AUD/USD rate was $1.3/1, to buy $US it would be $1.326 with Citi and 1.3065 with MC?

        • @Dacs: Where is this documented?

        • @ilikeradiohead:
          @davedave:
I think these are the rates Citibank uses: www.citibank.com.au/aus/investments/forex-rates/AUD.htm
Total spread between buy and sell is about 4% in total (so either way you convert you'll lose 2%).

Mastercard rates are from link given by @bargainaus above: www.mastercard.com/global/currencyconversion

@ilikeradiohead, if those are the correct rates tables then answer to your question is yes, except other way around: USD/AUD.

        • +1

@Dacs: Sorry but are you "thinking" these are the rates or are they the rates?

All I have is the experience that I found when travelling. In each case while there was a few hours difference in transactions, the 28 degrees rate on a purchase was very close to the rate I got with withdrawing cash from Citibank.

In same cases it was marginally higher and other it was lower, which I took was just due to the fluctuations on the currency market.

This was based on trips to USA, Bali, Vietnam, Singapore and Japan.

Given experiences others have had here (numerous posts) and at Whirlpool

From Whirlpool they say this is the visa rate used by Citibank Plus

          https://usa.visa.com/support/consumer/travel-support/exchang…

Note you have to put 0% as the bank processing fee percentage (as CBP doesnt charge this)

Does anyone know if there's an mobile app for the reloadable MasterCard?

  • Does anyone know what the expiry dates of the cards are? (1,2,3 years etc)

    • -3

      From the FAQ:

Does my Coles Gift MasterCard or Coles Online MasterCard expire?

Yes, both cards expire after 12 months. Your Coles Gift MasterCard's expiry is printed on the front on your card and your Coles Online MasterCard's expiry date is shown in the Prepaid Service Centre. When your card expires, you forfeit any unused value and this cannot be refunded.

      • It does say you can order a replacement card and they will transfer value to it.

      • +1

This deal is for the Coles Reloadable MasterCard. You have quoted the wrong FAQ.

        Here are the relevant sections.

Does my Coles Reloadable MasterCard expire?

Yes, your Coles Reloadable MasterCard expires after 2 years. The expiry date is on the front of your card. On the expiry date, your card will be deactivated and you’ll no longer be able to access your balance.

So make sure that you use all your card’s value before the expiry date or that you go online to the Prepaid Service Centre and request a replacement card to use after the expiry of your existing card.

What happens to my balance if my Coles Reloadable MasterCard has expired?

If on the expiry date your balance is $10 or less and you don’t have an additional card, the card closure fee will be applied to your balance. This means no funds will be returned to you

If you have a balance greater than $10, you can log in to the Prepaid Service Centre and order a replacement card. We’ll transfer the balance of your old card to your replacement card so you can keep using your balance.

We strongly recommend you either order a replacement card or use up your remaining balance before your expiry date. If you order a replacement card, we’ll transfer your remaining balance to your replacement card so you can keep using your balance.

        • Thanks mate, quoted the wrong FAQ in a hurry. Cheers.

    • usually 2 years

  • Can this be used to withdraw money overseas?

    • +1

Yes you will be able to, but local ATM fees will apply.

      • -1

Local atm? So if were to use this Japan, I can pay via credit card at shops/restaurants but will be charged at atms??

        • +6

The question asked was whether the card can be used to withdraw money overseas.

        • That purely depends on whether the ATM charges a fee or not. In my experience they don't but will tell you before you withdraw if there is.

        • @illumination:

I was referring to japan atms, sorry for my ignorance but does this mean all eptos transactions overseas are free?

      • Actually, this would probably be in addition to any fees that Coles pass on with overseas withdrawals when using this card (if any)

      • Will you get the mastercard exchange rate on the currency conversion like a transaction and just have to pay what ever that atm charges for a withdrawal?

        • I'd also like to know this. Can anyone confirm?

    • went to malaysia last year but can't take the money out. do we have to call first letting them know card will be used overseas?

      • You have to let them know you are going overseas.

  • +11

    Nice, pretty good deal!

AFAIK this makes this the only fee free way to make international transactions and earn points. Not bad.

The only other ways to earn points without being "penalised" for making an international transaction are:

    • Coles Mastercard ($89 annual fee)
    • Bankwest More Platinum Card (~$150 annual fee)
    • Bankwest Qantas Platinum Card (~$150 annual fee) - this is the only way to earn Qantas points without being penalised

Now there's this! Although I guess we can say there's a $10 "annual fee" for the card fee

    • Thanks for the research, been looking for a way to get points for spending overseas, without fees!

      • No problem. Just had a look btw and the annual fees are:

        Bankwest More Platinum: $130
        Bankwest Qantas Platinum: $160

Only the Platinum version of the cards have international transactions without an additional surcharge

    • +2

I got it for free from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237806. Hope they bring it back.

      • Dexter, you genius!
Yea I got that too. Too bad it's no longer available otherwise this deal would be worth 1.5 positive votes!

        • +1

Thanks, you illuminated my mind! :D

There's still a bit of time left, hope they bring it back.

    • +2

$10 for a half year as it is already June

    • I got the Coles Mastercard with $89 annual fee. I guess I will use that for most overseas payments that accepts Paypal.

However I still need a card like 28degrees to give out eg. Aliexpress that doesn't take anything else.

If the online centre works, then I will pay via that else just gonna cancel it

  • +5

Yeah but the flypoints are pretty worthless imo

    • +1

Yea I think even on a 1 to 1 basis a single FlyBuys point is generally considered less valuable than QFF or VFF, but any points in "small" numbers are pretty rubbish.

Say for example 2000 points, which assuming a card earn rate of 1:1 "costs" $2000 to accrue (ignore any bonus points offers from any credit card, or any redemption promotions from Qantas or Virgin):

      • 2000 Qantas Points: Quarter of a SYD-MEL, excluding taxes of ~$32, or ~47.28% of a $25 WISH eGC or ~$11.82 in value
      • 2000 Velocity Points: Tad more than a quarter of a SYD-MEL, excluding taxes of ~$21 or ~44.4% of a $20 Coles Gift card or ~$8.88 in value (BP gift cards give greater value)
      • 2000 FlyBuys? Whilst also rubbish, actually do allow you to redeem $10 off at Coles, or a $20 Mix Apparel voucher
It also translates to 800 Etihad Guest points.
      • +1

I thought 1500 Qantas points equals $10 in value
        https://www.qantaspoints.com/use-points/auto-rewards

        • Ah you're right. I thought they got rid of that, I was trying to find it the other day and couldn't find it so I thought it got removed.

That makes 2000 Qantas Points pretty good then! Can't edit my comment anymore as you've replied.

          • 2000 Qantas Points: Quarter of a SYD-MEL, excluding taxes of ~$32, or ~266.6% of a $5 WISH eGC or ~$13.3 in value

The consistency here is to value it to the cheapest way to obtain a gift card, and according to that page, 750 points is enough to get you a $5 gift card.

        • Converting like that to dollars is unlikely to be the best redemption rate. I had always understood good redemption of QFF points would get you between 1 to 1.5 cents per point. Ie, 1000 QFF points = $10 to $15.

        • @kipps: how ?

        • @spk: http://www.pointhacks.com.au/best-uses-of-qantas-points/ and other sites cover off options. Often business upgrades/etc.

  • +8

The title should include the initial card fee.

  • +1

So what rate is actually used?

  • +2

Handy feature of this card is you can turn it off / deactivate, then reactivate whenever you want. Good for storing away safely etc until the OS trip.
Also handy for a free sim card and a 30c coffee from a Coles servo from time to time.

  • +2

The $10 initial fee is offset by 2000 flybuys points, so $10 off at coles, if you link your flybuys number.

    • But what 2000 Flybuys points? Are you saying there's an unadvertised bonus offer of some sort?

      • edit: I think I was wrong. the 2000 bonus points ended on 9th June.

What I saw now was when you click 'buy now' on the above linked page you see:

Please quote your flybuys number. Your flybuys number will appear on the back of your Coles Reloadable MasterCard.
By linking your flybuys account to your Coles Reloadable MasterCard, anyone with access to your card will be able to redeem 2,000 flybuys points, instantly at a Coles supermarket checkout, to receive $10 off.

        Confusing.

        • They're saying redemption is the same as the regular flybuys card once linked, i.e. you can spend credits from your flybuys account at coles, without needing your flybuys card, but with the mastercard instead.

Nothing to do with any bonus.

  • So 28 degrees charges 3% of the cash advance or $4 (whichever is greater) so $40 per $1000 withdrawn from ATMs overseas plus atm fee if it applies, so assuming after quick read of terms this card only charges you a atm withdrawn fee & no cash withdrawal fee? In other words it's better then 28 degrees?

    • +7

The 28 Degrees card should never be your card for withdrawing money overseas. You should have a Citibank Plus Debit Card (Transaction account) for that.

      • Don't you have to find a Citibank atm though?
Some countries don't have from memory or I may be wrong

        • +3

          No you don't.
If the ATM charges a fee then you get charged a fee, but unlike pretty much every other card, you don't get a fee passed on from Citibank. In fact I usually don't use a Citibank ATM just because that means I'm limiting my options. From my experience of using it in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Paris, Singapore, Malaysia, none of the "other" banks ATMs charged me a fee.

Sometimes the ATM will give you a generic "warning" saying "your bank may pass on fees" - and you just say ok, because Citibank doesn't pass on fees.

      • True but leaving in a few weeks, am I right with the above comment? Should I get a Coles card for withdrawing cash rather then using my 28degrees?

        • +1

Out of this Coles card and 28 Degrees, I don't know what Coles charges for withdrawals so you'd have to check and do a comparison.

However, if you're leaving in a couple of weeks, that's enough time for you to get a Citibank card and use that.

        • @illumination: thanks, will look into it..

        • @RogueWolf: if you could let us know your findings that would be really great!

        • +1

@goodguy: will call tomorrow n let you know

        • +1

@goodguy: called them, had to explain a few times about the cash withdrawal fee as they just kept reffering to the ATM fee, they said no fee to pull cash out from the ATM, only fee you may be charged is a ATM fee, say $2/$5 like in Australia when you dont use your own bank ATM, so for pulling cash out of the ATM looks like this is a much better option then 28degrees who are now stinging customers $40 per $1000 to withdraw cash, if you want to double check call 1300 095 072 , if you do let me know if you get the same info.. cheers

  • Anyone know how long it takes if I order tonight to receive the card? Going away soon and not sure if I'm doing this too late…

    • just go buy it at coles..

    • Website says 3-5 days…

  • do you get charged transaction fees?
    monthly fees?
    yearly fees?

can i use this to join a gym? or will they reject it?

    • The answer to your first three questions is no. The answer to your last question is yes you can. Why would they reject a MasterCard?

      • well the thing is i made the mistake of asking them about a month ago if they can take the weekly repayments out of a re loadable credit card, the lady on the phone said no it has to be an original one, this was a month ago, i mean i dont think they could have said anything if i had not mentioned it, but im pretty sure they forgot it by now, i still have not gotten the membership but im thinknig of joining soon and if this works it would be great that way i wont have to give them my main credit card, you can never trust these gyms these days..

        • They can't tell the difference AFAIK unless you tell them, it works like a normal credit card.

If you have a contract with the gym and break it you'll still be liable for any payments whether the transaction is processed or not, so you should still be careful

        • (unless I'm mistaken) it said under the terms that you can't use it for regular payments. so you would be ok if it's a once off payment, but regular payments I don't think so

  • i wonder if you have over $10 balance left after 2 years and decide to renew will you still forfeit the first $10 to pay the 2 year $10 fee for the new card or will it be waived? also is this card any good for intl ebay purchases?

  • So if I'm going to the US in a couple of months time, is this my best option for taking money across for spending there (both through ATM withdrawals and paying by card)? Estimating that I'll spend around $2-$3k without accommodation.

    • +1

I took my citibank card to mainland USA as 7/11 have their ATM's in them.

      • How's the currency conversion on that (I assume it's the Citibank Plus)? So that's a better option than this card do you reckon?

        • +1

If you use a Citibank card and withdraw from a Citibank ATM, there are no charges. Whereas if you use this one to withdraw cash, local ATM fees might be applied.

been on ozbargain for years and only now discovered the option of bookmarking deals…nice.

    • Thanks! I had no idea either. Some good card info here, I've bookmarked it too :)

      • @scotty perhaps the bookmark feauture should be a standard star feature outside the post and not inside? I view several listings throughout the day and need to come back to them in the evening.

    • lol, me too.

  • Can you top up this card using a credit card? If yes, good way to take cash out of the account without paying cash advance :)

    • +1

If allowed it would be as a cash advance. No free lunch.

    • The only 2 ways to top up are Direct Deposit or via a Debit Card.

  • Can this be applied to existing prepaid cards I got a couple of months back?

    • Yeah I would also like to know as I got a free one, no with no balance.

  • Tried buying from amazon.in and flipkart card got rejected, ended up using Gem visa. :(

    • Did you try contacting Coles to allow international purchases?…

      • i called them and the first thing they said was your call will be charged $/min to answer my questions . i said no thank you :P.

  • Wish they had done this last month.
    Would of saved me 30dollars.

Still, at least i won't be charged for buying a new phone this week.

It's pretty good the Coles card I find, I've got 80 bucks worth of shopping credit since Jan.

Another few years and I'll have enough for a flight to somewhere within the same state!

edit or is this for only for buying overseas and I should stop posting when half asleep?

  • wait so ur saying if i get this i wont have to pay converasion rates for amazon ?

  • Excuse my ignorance - does anyone know how this would compare to the CBA travel money card? Going to bali next week and was going to use the travel money card that I already have however it doesn't seem to have option to Indonesian currency.

    • +1

This is better, travel money cards are inevitably riddled with hidden fees

I notice Citi gets frequent mentions in this post. A couple of things. Citi have just rolled out a new earner, they're charging overseas transaction fees (now a punishing 3.4%) now 'Charged for any transaction made in foreign currency or any transaction made with an overseas merchant.' This INCLUDES such transactions denominated in AUD!! When I asked them how anyone could identify exactly who was 'an overseas merchant' on the WWW, they gave me a page of unintelligible weasel words. So I will no longer be using my Citi card for any WWW transaction where I'm not absolutely certain the seller is a local company. This gets really tricky with travel, so I'll likely be using 28D for ALL travel.

    • Yeah they really like screwing you. It isn't enough that you are spending money with them, that they do you on exchange rates, they still feel obliged to add additional charges. I can't understand why there isn't more competition like 28D

    • As far as I know, the charge is only for transactions made on the credit card, not the Plus account debit card.

For the credit card there have always been fees applied to foreign transactions that are not in AUD, it's only the fee on foreign AUD charges that is new. I had the same experience with contacting them to say that it's not practical to check with every merchant in advance.
Here's a list of merchants that will attract the extra charge.

So much FUD in this thread..

Citibank Plus Debit doesn't attract any fees.

      • Not true, there are fees for using this card at an ATM OS

        https://www.citibank.com.au › pdf › Fees…

        • The card only attracts fees that are charged by the ATM.

Citibank themselves don't impose any additional fees.

So, as long as you use an ATM that doesn't attract an unavoidable transaction fee - of which there are plenty in most countries - you won't pay a cent.

  • I am so annoyed at this because i got this email literally the day AFTER i came home from queenstown :(…

good for next time I travel i guess

    • This card is really not that great compared to the Citibank Plus Debit card. You have to pay $10 just to get the card, for starters.

The zero currency conversion is only valid until the end of the year.

Plus, the expiry appears to be two years - who wants to get a new card every two years?

The Citibank card is a proper bank account that you can transfer money to, it has a mobile app, and the zero currency conversion fees will still be there in 2017.

      • I got my card when they had a promo going on where you pay $10 to get the card and get $10 spending credit. It also lets me put any name I wanted on the card for anonymity purposes so it was a travel prepaid use and dump card :)

The direct debit transfer into the card whilst wasnt instant, was within 5-12 hrs which was better than the advised 1 business day

For anonymity purposes, this was the go - to card since I'm ANZ everything else lol

      • How do you know the zero currency conversion fees will still be there in 2017?

        • Well I suppose I can't guarantee it, but Citibank haven't made any announcements about changing their fee structure. Whereas the zero currency conversion on this Coles card very clearly does expire..

  • Is this MasterCard considered a debit MasterCard? Like when Tiger airlines say no fees if paying by MasterCard debit? This may have already been answered but I couldn't see it in comments. Thanks

    • It should be. Either way you can use either in the app ;)

  • I'll stick with my Citibank Plus Debit for ATM withdrawals and BankWest Platinum Mastercard for purchases in foreign currency.

    • Just wondering, why wouldn't use the citibank plus debit for both?

      • +1
        1. Some people are claiming on this thread that Citibank's foreign currency exchange rate is worse than BW or 28D. I don't know if this is true.

        2. BW and 28D are credit cards, so you can find the money after. Citibank is a debit card so you have to have the money in your account before the transaction.

        3. Debit cards are not always accepted where there might be additional charges after eg car rentals where there might be damage. Or they tie up say $2000 till they confirm there is no damage. On a credit card that soaks into your credit limit but doesn't cause a problem if you spend well under the limit. On a debit card that is your own money being kept in deposit and unavailable to you to use elsewhere till the first merchant releases it.

        4. Dispute resolution can be better with credit cards than debit cards

      • Further to Dave's good points, when traveling, it's better to have 2 cards in case 1 fails or you lose one or one gets skimmed or scammed.

I've lost a bank card overseas twice inside the ATM. Some countries ATM are different to Australia, they spit out the money first before the card, I count the money and walk off leaving the card in the ATM. In Australia, you have to take out the card first before the money comes out.

Also, I can pay for purchases using credit, pay it off at the end of the month.

Plus I would rather my BankWest Platinum Mastercard gets skimmed or scammed while paying for something over my Citibank Plus Debit because it's not my actual money they are stealing and you have time to fix up the error.

If my Citibank Plus Debit is skimmed or scammed while overseas, I'm left with no money in my account or card access while overseas. Therefore I will have to use my regular bank or credit card.

      • You earn Qantas points with BankWest, the Citi card doesn't.

The Citibank card doesn't charge ATM fee, BankWest does.

So each card has advantages and disadvantages.

  • I have the citibank debit card.

Anyone know if the rates on this coles card will be better than the citibank card?
Looking at spending about 10,000 AUD in the USA next week.
Worth the bother of grabbing one of these?

    • +1

One is governed by Visa exchange rate and another is by MC exchange rate, so yeah they will differ.

  • So you only get points if you are spending money overseas according to the description…

I might wait and hope for that "$0" deal option to come up again. That's the right idea if I don't need it until September right?

  • Do these cards expire? if so how long do they normally last? Also can I use my myers coles giftcard credit to load into this card? cheers!

    • Yes.

2 years? Whatever the normal expiry date printed on a card is.

      Probably not.

  • Might be worth noting:
"We’re waiving the currency conversion fee on international purchases
on your Coles Reloadable MasterCard until 31 December 2016."

Its unclear if the currency conversion fee will be waived for overseas ATM withdrawals, if anyone wants to try a ATM withdrawal you first need to increase your card limit, you should be able to do this by verifying your id online.(Need to be 18 years or older to use ATM overseas)

From 1st July 2016 if you have increased your Card
Limit, the maximum you can withdraw from ATMs
will be reduced from $1,000 to $300 per day.
ATM fee as quoted by the ATM.

PDS Can be found on this page: https://financialservices.coles.com.au/prepaid-cards/about-o…

    • "its unclear if the currency conversion fee will be waived for overseas ATM withdrawals"

No currency conversion fees on withdrawls, ive called twice to make sure, there may be ATM withdraw fees but that should only be a few dollars, only downside as you stated is the $300 daily withdraw limit, a bit low..

      • If that is the case, it makes a good backup card. Hopefully soon someone can confirm that they are not charging 3% currency fee on ATM withdrawals.

        • theres no 3% fee ive called twice to confirm, but you need to work out what the ATM fees will be, as the max withdrawal overseas is only $300aus its the ATM fees you need to watch out for, last time I travelled using 28d atm fees ranged from $0 to $10+, its hit & miss each country, if they start averaging $10+ on $300 withdraw then its no differant then using 28d, but if they are only a few dollars then it works out ok

  • thanks for post op.
made the effort to login to give u a +
bought 1 to try when i go overseas in august.
    28 degrees vs coles lol
even though coles ends free exchange fees till end of yr :(

  • Did anyone have difficulties buying one of these cards? I went to coles robina yesterday and none of them had heard of it. They couldn't find any and asked several others in the store so I will have to try another store

  • +2

Something to consider, if your getting this card to take cash out overseas it may not be that handy, they limit you to $300 Australian dollars per day withdrawal overseas, the killer will be what atm fee you get charged, which you won't know until your there can be anything from a few dollars to $10+ it's hit n miss really, if it's in the higher end really just adds up similar withdrawal fee as 28d

Also there customer service sucks, bunch of fees they will try to sting you for when you call for enquiries, called regarding some card setting up issue they try to charge a $4 fee, can only imagine the service will receive if you have issues overseas..

    • Agree with you on a few things, but not on some others…

      Agree:

      • $300 AUD equivalent per day is definitely a significant restriction which sucks
      • Their customer service charging some ridiculous fees. I noticed it when I rang up too.

      Disagree:

      • ATM fees of a few dollars to $10+? I've never been charged an ATM fee overseas (ironic, as in Australia you get charged unless you're with ING or you're using your "home bank") and I'm talking from experience of using Citibank Plus Visa Debit card in France, Netherlands, UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan. A lot of the ATMs give you a generic warning saying "you may be charged a fee by your bank" which you can safely ignore because Citibank doesn't impose a fee. I think this would be the same with this Coles prepaid card, as they do not pass on ATM withdrawal fees.
      • You're comparing withdrawal fees vs 28 Degrees. Why would you even withdraw money from a 28 Degrees card? This hasn't been "free" to do in a really long time. You should be comparing it to the Citibank Visa

      Neutral:

      • Don't know if their customer service sucks, they seemed ok. It's just all the charges were a bit stupid.
  • the $300 maximum daily withdraw limit is a real killer

    • Get two cards?

  • Originally I was going to use this card to sign up for free trials which automatically start charging you after the free period (eg. Spotify or Presto). I thought this would be safe, as if I forget to cancel the trials, the transaction would get declined anyway since there'd be insufficient balance and I wouldn't lose money.

However, I just read this in the T&Cs, can anyone confirm if this actually occurs (or if they just claim it to stop people from signing up to free trials with recurring costs):

"If you authorise a transaction that exceeds the Available Balance, you’ll be liable for any Negative Balance that may result. If you have less than $0.00 Available Balance remaining on your Card, you must repay us the amount needed to bring the Available Balance back to $0.00. You may also be liable for any reasonable costs we may incur in seeking the amount of the Negative Balance from you. If your Card has a Negative Balance, when you next load value onto your Card, we will first apply that loaded value to recover the Negative Balance from you."

tldr; any overwithdrawal fees / is it possible to overwithdraw

  • Guys beware! Please read my post before buying it..I ordered the card and they just literally took my money and closed my account.
