Best European sim -Data only

I'll be in Europe 7 weeks this July/August and I'm curious to know what other experiences people have had with data sims.

I'll have no one to call as I'll be in a new place every day or every other day so all I want is a bit of data to stay in touch with people and affairs back home.
I can save web browsing for when I'm connected to wifi but having a bit of data is easier.

I the past I have used global gig who had a different offer to what they have now.
I paid $50 a month for 3Gb of data that could be used in a bunch of countries. The service varied greatly from country to country. In the uk I had average speed 4g which was nice but it Italy it barely worked (and it was supposed to work there)
It doesn't seem that that offer any prepaid packs similar to what I got last time and they now require you to sign up for three months. Which isn't so bad as you can use the data in Australia (it's not cheap but it better than losing it)

The countries I'm going to are:

Norway
Finland
Estonia
Latvia
Lithuania
Ukraine
Hungary
Croatia
Slovenia
Italy
France
Portugal
Andorra
Spain
Netherlands
Germany

Ideally a travel sim would cover me for all those countries but I can understand that it might not.

Any comments of input on people's experiences would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I found a company that actually covers all the countries I'm going to and even has a referral system to "earn" yourself more data. I have 600Mb to use anywhere in the world just for signing up.

I also bought a sim and 1 years membership as well as a 1Gb of data to use for $35 US dollars. Unlike other sims I was looking at, the data does not expire after 30 days or so. The data is good for 12 months.

I hope this helps someone

  • In my last 2 trips to Europe I went on month to month Vodafone Red Plans (50/month on month to month) and paid $5 a day for international roaming.

Calls to within the country you are in are free from your mobile (heck handy for booking things).
Calls back to australia are free
    SMS are free

You use whatever the data allowance is (i think at 50/month its 5gig)

Double check your country list, but I have used this roaming in Germany, France and Hungary A-OK without issue. At least 3g+ if not 4g speeds.

Not the cheapest way to do it, but 5 bucks a day is the cost of 1-2 beers (depending on how cheap you are) and I think it is well worth the convenience.

I cancel the plans as soon as I return home without issue

    • I did know about this but I'm not a Vodafone customer. It's also $150 a month or so. There are cheaper options out there I'm sure.

I'm not a Vodaphone customer either. I'm on Telstra and use Vodafone for one month then cancel.

Best of luck. I'm sure there are cheaper options available. You could even try to buy a sim per country. * shrug*

    • Vodafone is way to go, monthly plan fee plus daily fee only get charge if you use their system. Most of the time you can use free WiFi in Europe.
Also get a Skype account with calling credit.

I travelled to Europe earlier this year and used the 20 Pound all you can eat data sim from 3.
Unlimited data within the UK and all of their "Feel at Home" destinations. Not all the countries you want are there but it covers a few.

    • Thanks. This may be what I'm looking for. I don't think there will be one that covers all the countries but that's ok.

  • I find O2 pay-as-you-go quite good. Even worked in SE Asia. 2Gb costs 15pounds, 6Gb 30 pounds, and in-between options as well; lasts a month. Only issue: picked this up in London, since you are not visiting UK, not sure if relevant. Still, thought I'd mention for others' benefit.

Thanks for commenting. I'm hoping we get enough contributions and maybe we can update the ozbargain wiki.

It may not help me out now but hopefully it's of use to someone.

  • Try Free.fr

3GB of data for roaming within all of EU countries and lots of others.

Buy the SIM for 19.99euro + 10 SIM card fee outright in France only. Also being the French you can only buy it using their machines which are in French only.

Last time I bought it they offered 50Gb for use in France.

    • Awesome thanks
