Telstra Air Wi-Fi Hotspots Are Free for Everyone to Use from 17th to 20th Jun

1710

From Friday 17 June to Monday 20 June, anyone with a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone, tablet or other device will be able to surf, share or stream for free at Telstra Air Wi-Fi hotspots around Australia (they say participating hotspots though).

What does the World Wi-Fi Day Offer cost?
Access to Wi-Fi is free during the offer period.

Where can I find a hotspot?
You can find your closest hotspot at Telstra.com/air.
Please note, Telstra Free Wi-Fi may not be available at all hotspots.

Accessing Telstra Free Wi-Fi

Step 1: When you’re in range of a participating Telstra public hotspot, in the list of available networks on your mobile device, search and connect to: Telstra Free Wi-Fi

Step 2: A pop-up browser should automatically open; if it doesn’t:

  • Open an internet browser on your device (Safari, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer etc)
  • Try to access any website (Facebook, YouTube)
  • This will trigger the portal to open

Step 3: Click Connect to accept the offer terms and conditions to access 30 minutes of Free Wi-Fi.

Step 4: You will see a success screen and can now access free Wi-Fi at your current hotspot

Step 5: After each 30 minute session, your free Wi-Fi session will time out and you will see a browser pop up. On this screen you can reconnect for another 30 minutes by clicking connect and accepting the offer terms and conditions on screen.

Note: If you want to use Wi-Fi at another Telstra Free Wi-Fi hotspot, you will need to complete this process again

NBA Playoff Game 6 is on tmr. Gotta move between hotspots to watch the whole game.

    • +3

just go to your local pub..

      • +3

        It's FREE =.=

      • +1

I have been watching the games at the pub, however the pubs near my work refuse to turn the sound on…so using a hotspot would be handy if you want to listen to the commentary. (could listen to commentary on ESPN radio, but that has a 3min lag, so that isn't a good solution!)

        • +24

Take a universal remote and turn the sound up…just check model of TV…..it's what my nephew does ..when we go to the pub for dinner…he even changes channels.

        • +10

@garage sale: Even better, use the IR Blaster if your phone has one, thats how people use the TVs around my school
It's not as suspicious as taking a remote out of your bag c:

        • @IceyChow:

People with Samsung's won't be able to use an ir blaster :(

        • @garage sale:

          That is an awesome idea.

        • @Zaychri: my samsung tablet has an ir blaster. Ha!

        • +1

          @Zaychri:
Why not? Most top tier Samsungs have an IR blaster.

        • @Punkboy:

Note 5, and s7 don't and they're the bees knees

        • +1

          @Zaychri:

Wow didn't realise. Why did Samsung pull the IR blaster from the new flagships?

        • @garage sale:
That is what I do with my mobile phone

        • +1

          @Punkboy:

Not sure hey but from reading they did market research and reckon people don't really use it.

        • @Punkboy:
Pretty sure they wanted to reduce the size of the phone.

        • @IceyChow:

just don't do this at an international airport

        • +1

          @tith:

          why?

I've done it before at the Qantas Club at Brisbane international

        • +1

@tith: Yeh, better not to do this out in the public where they are in use. However, most of the TVs at school are turned off (remote off not powered off) anyways so we're just making some use of them :)

        • @IceyChow:

I do this all the time for shits and gigs at the pub.

Changing the channels (incl foxtel) volume, source the works. The confusion on the workers is priceless

Peel remote for samsung comes standarx in s6 edge and works for any tv.

    • +8

It doesn't say you're limited to 30 minutes per hotspot, it says you will time out after 30 minutes, at which point you have accept the terms and conditions again for another 30 minutes.

    • +1

      Go the Cavs!!!!

  • What's the speed like on these? I'm guessing shit

    • +1

I was getting 1MBit/s on speedtest.net from one of these last year. That's not too shabby for free.

      • 1 MBit/s is 100kb/s. Which is very slow.

        • +5

          Close… check the capitalisation though.
          B = Byte, b = bit.

          1Mb/s = 125KB/s (roughly)

        • You guys are both confused. Is it either 1Mbps or 1MBps ??

        • @HONDA4LIFE: Speedtest.net only gives bit, so 1Mbps

        • So how long to download an episode of game of thrones in 720p?

        • @garage sale: an hour

        • +3

Basically the same speed as my adsl+2 :(

        • +6

1 MBit/s is 100kb/s. Which is very slow.

Guess you weren't around in the 80's when 9600 baud was Fast.

        • @Apple96: You can configure speedtest to give you bit and byte under global settings.

        • @definitive: yes i know that, but most people probably don't.

    • +9

The telephone booths are slow but I connected to Telstra Air at my local Telstra shop and got 211Mbps/136Mbps.

    • I use the phone box near the post office in Civic (Canberra) daily and get 1.3 mbps download speed

    • the speed would depend on the actual WiFi connection, nothing to do with Telstra unless it's one of their pink public phones.

  • +17

wonder if the telstra system will fail while the freebie is on

    • don't think so, you have to be physically there near a hotspot, so there will be a 'maximum' number of people that could possibly surround a hotspot.

      • +3

Every hot spot is connected to a backend somewhere in some data centre… That's where the congestion happens.. Not in the hotspot per se

  • +2

hard drives are ready to download movies tomorrow!

  • +3

I tested on couple Telstra Air Hotspot in Bentley and Karawara, WA reached max 2mbps. Slower than 3G connection. Blehh…

  • +2

Probably be a network outage rending this offer useless

  • +13

Telstra Wi-Fi network. The second stupidest network idea after the Liberal Copper NBN. :/

    • +6

Imagine Telstra air if everyone had actual NBN though, it'd make sense. Every household would have leftover bandwidth and (if required) Telstra could go as far as upping your connection speed to compensate.

As for the current ADSL network, it's a terrible idea - your neighbours can hog your bandwidth.

    • Actually part of the 4G standard that phones can hand off to wifi to save 4G spectrum …..

      • I'll bet the data consumes your 4G data allowance though, even when it does come through wifi.

    • Wouldn't be so stupid if they had fiber internet like the ones in NYC

I am not interested to use someone else "free usage"

This is exactly why I didnot open my network to allow Telstra Air traffic in.

  • +6

Finally, I can legally steal my neighbours WiFi!

  • +2

As a Telstra customer I like the idea of this, but as I'm a semi-rural house and the only Telstra customer for miles I'd have benny-addled truckies and backpackers and homeless people sitting outside my house all the time, just doesn't really seem that great an idea…

Might try this free period though, scare someone elses kids :)

  • -4

My nearest one is 40 km away, thanks so convenient

Edit: Really only 3 days, Telstra is the ultimate tightarse

    • +2

It's 3 days for non customers. Customers are free til end of September.

      • +4

        It's 4 days: Fri 17, Sat 18, Sun 19, Mon 20

  • +2

They enabled it on my Modem and their boffins can't work out how to disable it.

  • +2

watch out for those evil twins people.

  • +6

Excellent, now everyone can get a taste of the Telstra outage experience!

  • +2

Telstra Air has been such a massive failure - getting customers to let people use their home wifi in exchange for the same access as well as phone boxes. Nobody signed up and why would they?

It won't be long before they abandon that whole business model and just charge people a flat fee for phonebox wifi access.

  • Eh, the only one that i could actually use when im out is one across the street from the train station but i couldnt even connect to it

    • Yeah I been barely able to use it, the ones I tried keep disconnecting.

  • +2

And when is this free weekend?

    • And when is this free weekend?

      Eh ?

      • +2

        Lol. Simpsons quote.

  • +3

Would highly recommend using a VPN if you are going to connect to these. Would be very easy for someone to set up an SSID called "Telstra Free Wi-Fi" and start pilching your packets.

    • +1

It's easier than that, there is no security for Telstra air hotspots, it's an open network. Telstra recommend not doing any online banking or payments using Telstra air. A VPN would be good idea.

      • +1

I had hoped that they would have some pretty good client isolation on them or something

        • +1

          From Telstra:
Most public Wi-Fi networks, including Telstra Air, are unencrypted or open and potentially unsafe. When you’re connecting to an open network, check for the padlock icon in the address bar of your device’s web browser. This represents another layer of security. We recommend not using Telstra Air, or any public Wi-Fi network, for things like internet banking or sending and receiving sensitive materials Information for families Public Wi-Fi, including Telstra Air, is available in many places across Australia and is easy to access.

  • Just letting more people realize Telstra Air is not a good choice… They should make it more stable before promoting it!

  • +1

How do you connect? The only options available for me are either to log in with a Telstra account or buy a pass. Or has it not started yet?

    • Same here

      • +3

Try connecting to a network called Fon Wifi. In the redeem a promo code section use "TelstraFonOffer" and see if that works.

Only some hotspots are included in this promotion and Telstra customers have priority over free wifi users.

  • I've tried connecting to these (the public one in phone boxes) numerous times with my Android phone (I'm a Telstra customer with the free use until Sept or whenever it is). The authentication method is dumb, and I'm stuffed if I can get it going. Gave up.

  • Wifi Should be free forever in public areas and just use ads to pay it off. That's how they do it in most European countries and some cities in the US

Ozzie big companies really lack innovation.

  • Personally found it pretty useless. Very few hotspots in useful areas. It's included in my plan but of the dozen or so times I've tried to use it I think it's been worthwhile once. Rest of the time just went back to 4G (or out here 3G).

    • Ya, useless, as well as their partnership with fon overseas. Cant find a spot and so slow.

      • They are predominantly in the CBD areas, I have telstra at home and was offered this telstra air wifi program for free until september, whatever data i use ends up eating the home data instead which was cool since i have 1000gigs anyway

I like this program, sucks its only free for limited time then they start charging after september or something, they werent really clear on that

        • I thought telstra bb with free air is a permanent offer.

I use it straight away when it launch but somehow the telstra air app kept frozen, and i end up delete it.
I try it again when I went over seas

It also turn on your modem to shared internet as telstra air even you quit telsra air.

        • @uccoffee:

I hope it is a permanent thing, like i said they were abit iffy on it when i first signed up to my bundle and they said there was a stop date to it but see what happens. Abusing it as is at the moment i havent had any problems with the app crashing

it's like auto connecting to a wifi hotspot lol

  • +1

I tried Telstra Air and was left disappointed. Slow speeds, and AP's in areas where they're difficult to use - like no seating within range, etc.

  • Stood right next to three different phone boxes with the "Telstra Air" box on top of them in the Brisbane CBD, and couldn't even detect the signal…

  • I'm leaching off one right now. I got one movie, and another one is on the way. Speed is definitely capped. Pretty cool though. Only limit I have at the moment is my laptop battery lol.

  • Think someone has setup a fake Telstra Air hotspot to facilitate a man in the middle attack at the Malvern, SA hotspot (corner of Fisher St and Unley Rd). 'Telstra Air' is the payphone (connected via Air app) and 'Telstra Free Wi-Fi' is the fake one (didn't show up as available in Air app). Screenshot of fake Wi-Fi network

Edit: According to the Telstra page, this was a special SSID used just for this event. My mistake.

  • If anyone wants to continue using Telstra Air but doesn't want to sign up for Telstra, check this out https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/225574.
