Due to MS Money being discontinued, MS is giving it away. This is a US version so be aware that when you import your downloaded bank statements, it will be expecting it in US date format. You can open the file in a text editor and change the dates yourself to make it compatible.

I don't believe MS Money was ever compatible with Australian banks so ignore any 'online' features (they should be deactivated already on this version but there are still references to them).

A few people have tried to add their own bank statement download service here (may be US-centric, haven't tried):

http://thefinancebuff.com/2009/09/security-quote-script-for-…

Please note: if you have an existing Money file, it may not be compatible with this US version. It is advisable to install to an alternate folder or another PC if you want an existing version to keep working.

edit: Quicken file extensions are QIF not QFC.
edit2: Added warning for compatibility issues for those with existing MS Money files.
edit3: Edited out issues with downloaded bank statements - they were only relevant to CSV which is not a standard and not one of the supported importable files

  • Good stuff! Been using Money for some years and prefer it over Quicken.

  • Awesome find! Ive been using Money for years and was very disappointed when they came out saying that they are discontinuing it. Tried the new quicken and found the interface to be very boring and plain. Money had it all, excellent reports and and easy layout.

I wonder if I can import the Money 2006 data file into this version.

    I'm surprised it's only a 34Mb file! Background info: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10261742-56.html

Now if only Microsoft can give us Flight Simulator X free since they axed that team/product too (sadly)!

  • Thank you! I've been using a very old version (one that originally came on 3.5" disks!!)
I'll certainly be upgrading if its all compatible.

Info only. www.gnucash.org is free as well and is not encumbered by proprietary file formats, plus there is ongoing development.

  • wow thanks. Can it display GST correctly?

    • No, as a consumer, you shouldn't need to worry about the GST. Maybe you're looking for an accounting program? Microsoft also has a free accounting program (similarly discontinued I think) and I believe a UK version for it exists too. Haven't tried them though.

      • oooooh ok..thanks. I got them mixed up.

  • Nice, I like free stuff. Downloaded, for possible future use.

  • Nice find, hope to make use of it.

  • Correction: Quicken files are QIF not QFC.

A great find but all is not smooth sailing if you want to convert existing Money files. I downloaded and installed it, but it refused to convert my existing files. A search on support shows that you need to use a version from the same localised area (e.g. a US version can not read files from an International version - what we would normally have in Australia).

It seems I can resolve this by:
    - Uninstalling Money Plus
    - Reinstalling my old version(2002)
    - Export files to QIF format
    - Uninstall old version
    - Reinstall new version
    - Import files from QIF.

Last time I converted to/from QIF I found some things did not convert well and there was a fair bit of manual fixing required. As I have about 10 files it needs to be simple.

So I am hoping someone can find a better solution.

I just went through the same thing, very frustrating and I don't have my original disc handy to reinstall my old version (2000), have to get it out of storage… Might pay to include this info in the original message describing deal as I went through a fair bit of installing of other versions trying to get it to convert before discovering the need for an actual localised version to be able to convert the old money file

      • If you're using Money 2005 (Australian version) and need to reinstall, you might notice that you need to create an empty file, run the money update and then open your actual Money file.

Unfortunately this update might soon disappear off Microsoft servers meaning we couldn't update and access our files anymore, so here is a way to create an install with the patch already applied:

  • to ms money users browser, saiya and zippy, what about the compatiblity issue that the op mentioned ? dates, files format, etc2 ? are you guys ok with that ?

    • I've taken another look at my QIF files and it seems the only issue is the date format (it's just a text file that you can edit to make it compatible). My problems were on the CSV version of the files, but I misremembered. I'll update the text. As for the version issues, I had a 2005 data file that would not import, but I haven't been keeping it up to date so I didn't care.

  • hmm maybe i'll considering try quicken - its australian edition so wont have any issue at all… yes its expensive
