Where should I live? (Suburb of Sydney)

Property is so expensive so need OzB wisdom :) Asian background so preference for in/near Asian suburbs. I am living and work In the city currently. Basic apartment in city is 1m-1.3m for 2-3 bedroom. Considering this, but open to thoughts on near suburbs 20 mins from city on bus/train. Any ideas welcome.

a friend has unit in pyrmont. public transport is underground and chinatown is a ten minutes walk. it's not a bad place to live if you don't mind the noise.

    • Pyrmont is definitely close by, will take a look at pricing. Thanks

      • Pyrmont is not that great for families. Their primary school is planning to close due to low enrolments. But it is great for singles/couples

Asian suburbs: AShfield, Croydon, Burwood, Strathfield, Lewisham (sort of).

    • Thanks - might take a trip to Burwood tomorrow :)

    • Epping, Eastwood, Ryde

Don't forget Hurstville. It's a ~20 minute train from the station to Central.

    • I thought Lewisham had more of a wog vibe (Greek, Portugese, Italian, etc) - maybe it has changed more recently.

  • Artarmon. I have some friends who live there and it's ~20mins to the city by train.

  • I'd suggest Carlingford, having lived there for 15 years. It's close to the Chinese and Korean communities in Eastwood and Epping, whilst having a fast-growing Asian community of its own. Lots of new apartments around Carlingford Court shopping centre and train station. House prices in general aren't as high as Eastwood/Epping at the moment, and it's close to Northern Line express trains, 20 minutes to the city (Carlingford trains are infrequent and inconvenient, but the NSW government is planning light rail to Parramatta and Olympic Park). Also close to good schools (Carlingford West Public, North Rocks OC class, James Ruse) for your future kids when they grow up.

Lidcombe or Olympic Park or Homebush. Fast trains to the city (every 15 minutes). Plus, Fiber to the Home NBN!!!

Olympic park is a noisy area though. Hope you don't mind frequent concerts, crap ton of traffic during special events and sport games and a lot of noise from car racing…

    • Newington next to olympic park but not noisy, Rhode, wentworths point

      • +1

Rhodes is bloody expensive though. $600k for a one bedroom apartment.

But amenities are good. New shopping centre is being built.

    • Lidcombe doesn't have a shopping centre.

      Olympic Park trains are unreliable.

That's the start of western sydney as far as I am concerned. I think the OP should will prefer staying closer to the city.

  • Chatswood

Asian suburbs: AShfield, Croydon, Burwood, Strathfield, Epping, Eastwood, Ryde, Chatswood, honsby, Homebush, Libcombe,Parramatta, hurstville.

    • Thats like half of Sydney 😄. OP is gonna have a hard time narrowing it down from such a big list

  • Hi all - thanks for the suggestions. I've been googling basic suburb pricing and travel times r(ather than refreshing OzB), Strathfield, Burwood and Lidcombe look promising. (Chatswood and Artarmon seem very good but probably beyond budget).

Let me know if any of these have other issues. Not worried by noise / events - but safety and proximity to bargains is a priority :)

    • travel times

can we assume that you and your partner are on a good income? if you are, then why not live closer or in the cbd? walking to work can save you both time and money.

      • Borrowing isn't a problem in terms of interest - but I'd like to pay down principal in reasonable time.

Yes, tempted by city but then no land…

    • Go for Burwood imo.

Strathfield has bigger houses, though. There are far more trains too.
      Burwood = Chinese
      Strathfield = KOrean

      • +1

Burwood new apartment 2bed is around $800K-1M now

        • +1

          My word…..
          They're so small, though.

        • @cDNA:
New one of course small and expensive, this is burwood

  • +2

Burwood. 15 mins express trains to the city. Local Westfield, TWO chemist warehouses, Burwood Park.

    • and lots of traffic.

Also throw in sh*tkickers that hang out at and around Westfield.

      • Burwood is a suburb where you don't really need a car. Everything is in walking distance if you live close to burwood road as I do. Agree traffic is bad though.

Never encountered any hooligans around Westfield area. I thought all the noisy types were concentrated up the lebbo end of burwood road toward the Hume Hwy.

  • The most Asian suburb in Sydney, Cabra!, or Cabramatta

If u like proximity to bargains, then look no further than Hurstville. They still have $6 hair cuts! Burwood cheapest haircut is $12. But getting "land" is going to be hard if you want it close to shops/westfields/train for less than $1.3 million. You will need to compromise with long walk to train station or having to drive to most places or an old run down house.

Have fun house hunting. Its an emotional rollercoaster.

    • Cabramatta is not a bad option these days. People used to find it unberable due to drug dealing but it has become gentrified.

  • Kingsford - plenty of asians supermarkets and cuisine around. Close to beach and city and light rail coming in a couple years. No idea house pricing though. Close to UNSW too so property always going to hold value, easy to rent out.

  • Suburb which has NBN connection and closer to the train station :)

  • Ok - after looking around, I've convinced myself that I will focus on cbd. It seems the nearby suburbs are equally expensive (or more), unless going quite a way out. And I do have a preference to be close.

Monitoring market and will pay up when the right place is available. Hopefully some of the developments underway will drop prices on existing buildings

Will still visit the named suburbs when I can :). Thanks all for your help / thoughts
