How much would you pay for a basic t-shirt?

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at starting up a basic t-shirt store, with just simple plain shirts.

Details on the Shirts:

  • Earthy "heather" colours, which is a blended colour not solid - see here
  • 60% Cotton, 40% Polyester so it's easier to breathe.
  • Plain no custom print

After looking around the market price seems to be $15-20 with a few more basic solid (non blend colours) at Kmart, Big W, Target all around $5-$10
Just wanted to ask - what would you pay for a similar shirt to the one linked.

You don't want OzBargainer's to be your target audience

    • Why not? If I need to gauge whether it's going to be a feasible business I need to have a competitive advantage, and without a brand/logo or a custom design, I really only have price or material to go off and if you get the price right with the professionals then you're off to a good start.

Cost leadership for items like this is about minimizing expenses and operating on a razor. You can't do this with an item like a tshirt while scaling. Target / Kmart / Big W will generally have control of their own supply chain in countries like Bangladesh (for these sort of goods) and yet still produce basics that are sold for ~7 bucks.

You've really gotta consider if you can beat that price inc. delivery, QA issues (account for high number of return where you will eat the cost) and still have room for profit after you've purchased through a reseller at a much lower volume.

Generally speaking if your point of differentiation is "I'm the cheapest", you're not valuing yourself and you're going to have a bad time. You see it over and over again w/ entrepreneurs in all industries.

        • Well said - was part of the reason why I wanted to post this poll to see a good estimate (outside of research I did on stores) of what price I would need to be beat.

  • The T-shirts you linked on Imgur look very thin.

After a few washes they will warp and go out of shape, if they're anything like the ones I bought from Kmart..

  • My average is still $5. I'm going to look like a sack of spuds anyway.

  • I usually spend $15-$25 on my plain T-Shirts. T shirts are usually made in USA on old school looms. If Australia had a quality made plain basic Tee, I'd buy that.

    I'd pay $5-$10 for a basic t-shirt

I'd only pay $15-$20 for a character or logo t-shirt

The most I would pay for a T-shirt is $30 but that would be a custom t-shirt along the lines of the products available from Spreadshirt, Redbubble and other custom clothing companies.

    No bikies option?

Nah jk not even 5 bucks, just go to kmart where everything is on clearance

It really depends on quality. A lot of the cheaper plain/basic Ts I've bought, have tend to warp/go out of shape (as Scrimshaw mentioned) after a few washes. For those, I'll think twice before even paying $10, which is probably the maximum I'll pay. I would categorise the Asos branded ones under this category.

For good quality ones, I wouldn't mind paying more. The ones I bought from Uniqlo has managed to hold its shape.

  • Thank you to everyone for your responses, and your poll votes. I greatly appreciate it! I've decided to rethink my product, as the materials used and the look just makes it too expensive to compete with the other stores.

  • As an update to this earlier this year I launched BasicTees, but have only just started marketing it.

To celebrate the launch of the new online store, I am offering AS Colour t-shirts for $9.95 each. These shirts normally sell for around $15-$22 each.

Simply enter the coupon code JULY17 when you shop online at www.basictees.com.au. Shipping is available or alternatively - Local pickup is available for those on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

    Thanks for the input guys!

    • Only m l and xl?

      • I'll be adding more sizes in the coming weeks. What sizes were you after?

    • Good luck but shouldn't you post this as a deal?

      • Possibly. Wanted to see the reactions first from the thread.

  • Go to OPshop, st vincent depaul.
