  • Hi,

Could you give some information like.. How did you attain your Aussie citizenship? Do you have a birth certificate? I applied for a passport for my daughter( myself and my spouse are PR's), and we got the passport in less than 24 hours. Had to pay around $120 express fee

    • Hi bobinv,
I was born in nsw have a Birth certificate but lost marriage certificate to get passport I need a copy of marriage certificate,as I live in melbourne
      was married in NSW
can't afford to fly to sydney to get certificate in person.
I have to send Birth certificate medicare card and Drivers License as identification to get marriage certificate.
      Thankyou for advice.

On the BDM site they say the standard turnaround time for a marriage certificate is 10 days + postal delivery time but priority turnaround time is 4 days + postal delivery time. Have you made your online priority application?

When they said they can't give a timeline they must mean the Australia Post part of it because their timeline is clear.

If it gets desperate you can apply in person and it's 1 day.

    • Hi shaybisc,
Thankyou for your help much appreciated
Can't apply in person would have to fly to sydney

Do you have any friends in NSW? Call BDM tomorrow morning. Ask what you would need to do to authorise a friend or family member to pick up your marriage certificate and then they can courier it to you.

Yes someone can apply on OP's behalf…

If you want someone to apply for a certificate on your behalf please download the Letter of Authority, giving permission to apply.

      • If you really need to go to NSW it might be easier/cheaper to just go to Albury instead of Sydney. But as others have suggested ultimately you can just authorise someone else to do it on your behalf or you can pay for the priority online application.

Do both in person. Got a passport done in two days no dramas. Submitted forms in person then picked up. Cut out the middle man aka Australia post.

  • Hi Hoju,
Thankyou for your advice but my marriage certificate is in sydney
    I live in melbourne
When marriage certificate arrives will go in person.

  • Stress little, I know it seems overwhelming, but you have time… as others have suggested, do the passport thing in person and pay for the express option (it's well worth it- from the point of view of someone that left it two weeks before they were due to fly to the UK to get their passport replaced).

  • I cannot help with your question, but good on you/your daughter for winning the competition! It will be such a fabulous trip :-)

  • It really depends on when you depart. If you left on say the 29th of July (half-way through her holidays) you could make it with no extra processing costs, assuming 2 weeks for the marriage certificate if you scan and send documentation tonight and 3 weeks for the passport. When I applied for my passport with just over 3 weeks to go they told me not to bother with priority processing.

Otherwise, you don't have a choice but to pay up for priority processing of the passport ($127) for a 2 working day turnaround. I wouldn't bother paying to fast-track the marriage certificate from 2 weeks to 1 week ("4 days") for $110 assuming you apply tonight/tomorrow/yesterday on-line. Just make sure the post office takes your expensive passport photo to save time (my home shot was rejected) and apply as soon as possible.

    Congratulations!

  • Congrats. If you have not already you and/or your daughter should look to open a card with no overseas transaction fees. A citibank debit would be the cheapest way to get euros. Any of the credits will be useful if you are going to book a hotels etc

You have enough time to get these but should apply this week.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cards_with_no_overseas_tra…

    • Haha. It looks like Citibank spam :) But useful info.

"My aunty made $4000 in one week using this brand new money-making scheme +++——- WWW . shadywebsitegetrichquick . BIZ +++++——-"

      • It just links to pros cons of each listed on ozbargain? Thats pretty balanced…
Citibank is the only debit card. If OP can't afford an extra trip to Sydney probably doesn't have the income to get a credit card approved, but perhaps, or her daughter could.

Any other ways of getting money are going to cost fees/commission that it sounds like she can't spare. It's nice to think of someone who otherwise probably would not travel getting a free trip, and sad to think of them coming home to a bunch of foreigh transaction fees.

  • sorry if i've missed something here. can i ask why do you need a marriage certificate. what about all the people who are applying who aren't married? i wasn't married when i applied 9.5 years ago(renewal this December with application ready to hand in). 2 weeks ago i did a passport for my 6 month old daughter and it came yesterday, so a total of 12 days turn around. i don't recall any marriage certificates being asked, just certified copies (some post offices have JP's) of my citizenship and her birth certificate was required. it might be worth calling up immigration and asking them for advice. if you do use the call back feature else you will be waiting on the phone for 1+ hour. i've rang them a few times and had a call back within 2 hours every time. good luck!

maybe she's changed her name … and her birth certificate name is different from her current name (in her driver's licence?)

      • fair enough. never thought about that before. i would assume a lady would change their last name after a divorce, but widowed i never would have guessed.

  • I am confused, why do you need a marriage certificate?? You were born in Australia. My wife just applied for a passport and nowhere did it ask for one. Do you have your birth certificate??

    • Think hard, this person is female, got married, name change due to marriage therefore you need a marriage certificate.

Its unfortunate that you need to apply by person, blame the NSW government.

And for the OP, travelling to Syd is not that expensive, get a cheap flight from jetstar or bus it. Specially if you intended to travel to Europe even with a winning ticket, you should have some emergency money and make sure to get travel insurance too if you don't have.

      Good luck and Enjoy.

    • Hi slow,
I don't have any documents in maiden name only Birth certificate
When my husband passed I didn't change my married name.
I need marriage certificate for verification
I sent my documents today to sydney on line

  • If you have your birth certificate and any of the Category A/B/C documents in your maiden name, you could always just apply for your passport in your maiden name.

You would only need your marriage certificate if you want to get your passport in your married name or if you do not have any documents in your maiden name.

  • The passport turnaround time itself is pretty quick. I had to get my passport replaced at the Australian consulate in the USA and it took about 3 weeks, so I would have thought that doing it here would be faster.

  • Thankyou everyone for your help much appreciated
My daughter wants to leave on 14th July for cruise 15th july
as my son is living in London teaching there.
Have organised to add this trip to London at end of cruise
as my daughter's holidays finish early august.
    I am feeling very excited

    • adding an extra holiday? are you sure you can't afford to fly to sydney to get marriage certificate in person! i guess what you save here can go to fun else where.

      • +2

I would argue that having 2 holidays already booked, the OP can't afford not to spend whatever it costs to get it done.

  • cant you get an emergency travel document…
