Is It Worth Buying a Laptop in HK Airport?

Will be passing through HK shortly, wondered if there are any reasonable laptop deals to be had at the airport (fairly short connection, so no time to go downtown)?

I know there is rarely any point in getting anything electronic duty free in Perth Airport because they usually just cut the GST off full-priced products, which makes them substantially more expensive than "street prices". But maybe HK Is different?

Really more interested in a wider range than rock-bottom prices - I am looking for a 13" and there seems to be almost none for sale in Oz that lie between the HP Stream / Chromebook types and the Zenbook / MacBook / 2-in-1 types.

Any comments, suggestions, warnings etc. gratefully received.

  • Not worth it in my opinion. HK is not what it was before. Nowadays prices are pretty much the same considering the risk of having a warranty claim.

    • No, I doubt it very much*.

      • Depends on wild fluctuations in FX rates: Maybe if you buy in pounds you are holding; then should the UK Brexit, you see an enhanced material upside rather than the likely capital loss.
      • It is now a few minutes after polling has closed (no results) and the AUD is up over a cent against USD and down 0.5p against GBP.

  • Check the price there first. For example price.com.hk is the price comparison site there and check their laptop category. I agree with @Colombian though — not worth it.

  • No.

  • I bought one years ago at the computer marketplace in HK and it wasn't worth it.

Just wait for good deals on OzBargain.

  • try dell outlet?

  • If you are going to go through with it (I personally think it's not worth it), make sure you get one that has warranty in whatever country you are going to mainly use it at. Once I had a laptop that wasn't from Australia, took like an entire month before they could actually fix it because of the parts not being available in Australia.

  • No.

  • Just go bonkers in honkers
