Online.net False Advertising and Shady Practices

So I wanted to have a play with a cheap dedicated server. Online.net seemed like a good option. I purchased a DEDIBOX XC 2016. Cost me €25.86 for the setup fee + the rest of June's worth of the server. On their site, it had an article about KVM over IP.

On that article it clearly states (or stated, they've now taken it down - confirmation of their shadiness) that you can request KVM over IP is added to a server. I noticed my box didn't have it, so I requested it.

I was told it's not possible, as their new 2016 XC/SC models don't have KVM cards. I said 'Okay then, I'd like a refund, it's of no use to me'. I was told that it's not possible, as the DEDIBOX XC 2016 page states that a serial console is available, and doesn't mention KVM. This is not stated on any of the order or purchase pages - only the product page.

I was advised this was not possible, as 'The documentation website is not a reason to assert a refund.' - basically telling me, just because they messed up an article ON THEIR OFFICIAL WEBSITE and therefore misled me, I'm not entitled to a refund.

I paid with my Visa Debit (they don't take PayPal) so I have no buyer's protection.

Here's a cached version of the article stating "At any time you can make a KVM over IP application by contacting the technical assistance." https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:ju06pa…

Thoughts? Suggestions? Am I in the wrong here?

You could possibly do a Visa Chargeback 'Item Not as Described' if you contact your bank.

    • Oh, I wasn't aware that was an option. Is there a chance Online.net could send me to a collection agency or something?

Nah, the fact that they're charging in euro means that they won't do jack.

        • The bank won't do jack, or Online.net won't come after me?

@deanylev: The bank will be able to assist you for sure, but the site will have no recourse against you.

        • @iscooljoey2: That's fantastic! :D

@deanylev: yep. For €25, it would cost them more than it's worth to chase it.

Why don't you ssh into your box and install VNC server … I'm not sure why you think you need IPKVM (which is often a VNC implementation anyway).

    • Funny, I actually did just that around a day ago :D

Completely slipped my mind that Linux is terminal-based, and so everything can be done in the command-line.

Good stuff. Problem solved and enjoy your metal :)

Services you host on your box are often accompanied by a web interface so you could also do away with installing a desktop environment which bastardises your clean image. Also check out webmin for OS admin with web interface.

        • Actually decided to switch providers. Managed to score an i7 3770, 16GB RAM, 6TB HDD box for 33 euros/month on Hetzner, with no setup fees. I need that storage for what I'm gonna be doing :D

          @deanylev: Good score.
