FREE "Sweet Aussie Deals" Android App [Was $3.99] (Coupons Given inside Post)

3360

Hey guys,

Edit 5: Sorry out of codes now. The play store only limits it to 500 coupons and I didn't come prepared. In the meantime I lowered the price down to $0.99.

Just launched this "Sweet Aussie Deals" (unofficial ozbargain) app and received a bunch of codes. I made this app to enhance the viewing experience when browsing on your Android phone by utilising google's latest material design.

I am not sure if there is a better way to do this, but just leave a comment or pm and I will send you the coupon code.

Screenshots

Features include:

  • Built in Reminder feature
  • Customisable viewing experience (Dark/light theme, Top comment shown with post, compressed/expanded card view, split screen for tablets)
  • Deal categories
  • And more

Thanks

Edit: Does anyone know a better way of distributing the codes out?

Also, If you're a uni student, please check out my other app (free) that I just released today. app

Edit2: Wasn't expecting this many request. Please be patient, I am going through everyone now, I got enough codes, but its not a super quick process.

Edit3: I'll be alternating between sending codes from the post and pm. I have 500 coupons in total so there should be enough

Edit4: Just an update. I'm still going, copy and pasting each code from the spreadsheet. Im sorry if i dont reach everyone as I have 230 left to go

    Rep/OP/Dev,

Gonna leave my comments here because yes you asked for a review but I don't know whether you'd be happy with my rating. Let me know if you want me to translate this to a review on the Play Store.

    Pros:

    • Category view - similar to going to Deals > Categories on the website, which will then show you all the categories and give you the option to go in and look at the deals of that specific category
    • There is a reminder function
    • The dedicated comments view is actually quite neat
    • You can see the first (or is it highest voted?) comment on the first deal under Top Deals section. You can't see that on mobile version of Ozbargain!
    • Formatting comes across in the words of the description under a deal! This also doesn't happen on the mobile version of Ozbargain. As an example, look at how this deal appears on the app vs on mobile Ozbargain. (the edit 5 text)

    Cons/Bugs:

    • No way to login - I don't know about others, but the ability to login is huge to me. It completely changes the experience.
    • The header doesn't disappear when you scroll down. This takes up unnecessary screen estate.
    • [BUG] There is some kind of bug when switching between Compressed view and Expanded view - sometimes Top Deals shows nothing, and it doesn't seem like New Deals properly switches modes either
    • Nothing to indicate whether the current card view mode is Compressed view or Expanded view (like different colour text/background, or a tick or other visual indicator)
    • When switching between the card view modes, the whole screen "refreshes" - I feel like this is somewhat unnecessary? Surely the whole screen doesn't need to refresh, as opposed to just the main body section?
    • The reminder function seems odd. It asks for a date that you'd like to be reminded, and the default input for time is 00:00 although it simply shows "Morning" (I don't think people would assume 00:00 is morning, and I don't see why this can't just show 00:00 by default?)
    • The other odd thing is below the date and time fields, there is a radio button option of Start date and end date. Firstly, the fact that it's a radio button implies that it's a required field. Secondly, what exactly is this asking? "Do you want to be reminded of the start date or end date?"?
    • The text of the description of a deal is a bit lighter than the actual title, which is logical. However, I still feel like the title itself doesn't stand out enough from the description text. Maybe a different background colour, different colour text, bold, and/or larger font might help.
    • [BUG] When I added a two deals from Automotive and one from Computing section as Reminders, they didn't appear in Reminders…. hang on.. they appeared after I added a reminder from another deal from New Deals section.
    • [WORDING] In the reminders section, when you click on the Pencil under a deal (I assume this indicates "Edit"), the title of the new box that appears is "Add Reminder". I assume this should be "Edit Reminder"? The text that appears after amending the details then says "Successfully added the changes" as opposed to "Successfully made changes" or something along the lines of that. (sorry this one sounds a little anal)
    • [BUG] After adding a reminder with the default time of 00:00, the reminder in the Reminders tab actually becomes 23:59.
    • There is no access to the other parts of Ozbargain such as Forums, Competitions, Wiki - at least on the mobile version of Ozbargain you can, and anything that you can't access you can switch to the desktop version of the site to access it.

    General Comments/Neutral/50-50s/Personal (dis)likes:

    • [INFO] Choice of two themes: Light/Dark - Light looks similar to the website's natural colours of orange and white, whereas dark seems nicer for night reading (arguably a limitation too in that there are only two themes)
    • Dedicated app - both potentially a pro and a con. Personally I don't like having an extra app when it's not needed, and I definitely feel like the mobile version of the website itself is better than the app, so on a personal level I would say this is a con.
    • The "compressed" view still feels like the space each deal takes up is too large (someone else mentioned this). You can only really see one deal at a time. On my 5.5" screen, I can view up to almost 3 deals on Chrome as I drag down (the address bar disappears as you scroll down).
    • I think it's also important to note that you're up against a really fierce challenger in the Ozbargain native mobile app view. Personally I think it's really really good as it is and you were always trying to challenge something pretty well established.
    • [INFO] Each deal shows the following info: OP's username, positive votes, negative votes, # of comments, # of clicks, domain? (I think they're tags)
    • [INFO] Each deal has the following options (from left to right): Load in browser, Share (you get given a list of apps to choose from), View Comments, Load deal link
    • [Question] I'm assuming "Top deals" is like viewing the front page of Ozbargain where only those with certain # of votes or certain momentum of votes appear?
    • There is no prompt after "ticking" a Reminder. It is assumed that the tick is like a done, but I personally think a prompt to say something like, "done with reminder?" would be good.
    • Reminders from deals viewed in Categories have a default date selected, whereas the ones from New Deals don't.
    • It is possible to select a date from the past as the reminder date, although the app will tell you that you can't select a date from the past. You could just disallow selecting a date from the past?
    • All the reminders have an aircraft landing icon. I don't know what the relevance is lol but I guess I can see how it ended up that way..
    • I feel like whilst the overall UI is not exactly user unfriendly, it's not entirely user friendly either. I'd give it a 5/10 for user friendliness.

    TLDR:

I prefer the mobile version of Ozbargain more.. but the mobile version of Ozbargain is, imo, really good, really comprehensive as it is. This app has a long long long way to go. It feels very unpolished which is not that surprising given it's clearly new, but I can't see this app usurping the mobile version of Ozbargain at all. The inability to login and vote on deals/comments or make comments is huge, and you can't access the Forums or Competitions section. Above all, the mobile version of Ozbargain is free. I would personally give this a 2/5.

I hope you don't take these comments the wrong way. You asked for feedback so I am giving my honest feedback to you about the app. I know that reviews on the Play Store are probably important to you, but it's probably better I give this type of review on Ozbargain :)

wow, thanks for taking your time to providing such a detailed feedback, all the points made are really good and I'll definitely look back to this post in the upcoming days.

I had a lot of good feedback from many other users yesterday, and with a lot of the requests being the ability to login, so that is the feature I'll look into for the next big update, possibly along with widgets. In between there are many fixes/improvements I will be implementing such as the ones listed above.

As i had to view this deal on a windows phone 📱 (shoot me now), i was going to download to my android mobile, & check it out. Since it wasn't a 24hr giveaway, I'm left a little miffed when you've edited this post 5 times…
On your next update, can you put it up for a 24hr period, & notify us here in advance of a day to take full advantage of what seems to be,a sweet deal. All the best 😊

Nice feedback, certainly looks like there is a lot of work to be done.
Says a lot for trying something out before handing over the $3.99 asking price (before the 75% discount)

      Caveat emptor

Missed the freebie - didn't read this deal while I had a free lunch. Bought it to hopefully help with development.
Happy with & only use mobile version of OzBargain at the moment. Will be interesting to see how it adds to the Ozbargain experience.

Not so impressed - can't login as already noted, so can't vote on deals, or hide comments - so no way to filter out jv if needed.
I'll stick with mobile OzBargain for now.
