Dev Laptop

I'm currently studying to be a web developer, looking at front end currently but may switch to back end later.

I'm looking for a light laptop that has 16gb ram or more and has decent specs.

Looking to spend max 2.5k

Looking for some suggestions.

Edit - Was looking at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/249286 but i dont need 4k screen or dedicated GPU as i wont be playing games on the machine.

Sorry posted on a mobile and missed it.

Looks like you need one too? :P

  • Get a Metabox http://www.metabox.com.au/. You can customise your components so you get what you need.

    • I have a Metabox (W230SS) as a dev laptop for almost 2 years. It's a quick machine with lots of customisation. However the keyboard and trackpad sucks (much prefer my ThinkPads).

  • the last website i did was done in a Hi-Speed Internet Booth, yep, the ones that are at the shopping mall… What you need is quality clients rather than a quality machine…

    • sounds professional …

      • Well what do you know, the invoice was professional, that was all that counted…

  • Lenovo t460p with GTX940M

    or

Dell Latitude 14 7000 with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD

    or

    Dell XPS15

I'm a software developer. My recommendation would be to get a 2nd hand MacBook Pro. This is the best way to get access to all platforms simultaneously, and a well built and well balanced machine. Others will disagree of course; but this is my opinion as a Dev of 16 years experience.

Add the RAM yourself up to 16GB, and put in a decent SSD if it doesn't come with one.

    • I agree. I used to be a Windows fan for development but after using a MacBook at work for a front-end job, it's definitely a good choice.

    • Infinitely more credential when you code in TextMate while sipping latte in your local cafe :)

  • Shouldn't really need a beast for dev work. Still sporting an i5 2600K as my desktop and see no reason to upgrade bar TPD efficiency gains. Interested in the Atom Skylakes at the moment. They are cheap and can edit text as fast as the next … which is essentially what "dev" is. Probably best to get a decent build quality with an impressive battery and a low-mid spec processor. git + ssh + atom/sublime/limetext will be your daily go to once you get into it.

Just got my XPS 15 with 32GB of ram and 4k screen.
    Highly recommended.
I mostly work with Azure PaaS/IaaS.

Although, if you're going for dev work I'd recommend a Mac so you can do stuff for ios, blah blah blah. Only devs I often see with PCs are dedicated to .net
