Wow, what an overpriced laptop. Excuse my knowledge but is this really worth this kind of money? I bought the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 512 SSD 8GB RAM a couple of weeks back for $1,199 so how does it compare to that. Pretty Happy with Lenovo build and quality and the machine looks great.

    • The Dell is a very nice unit and considered one of the best Windows laptops around. Is your deal still available? It sounds like a good price - full specs?

I bought it through this deal. See my comments at the bottom. The code was still working through the Lenovo Small Business website. No idea if you can still get it for that price.

This has a 45w quad core cpu. It is like a MacBook Pro with poor keyboard, trackpad and running Windows.

        That's a bit moronic.
Keyboard is good, trackpad has its issues, but most of the issues have been resolved already. This sells far better than any macbook pro.
Windows 10 has hundreds of millions of users and your OS is based on Unix. I rather use a free Linux Distro than Apple's one.

This is nothing like a macbook pro.

The SSD is faster in this, the processor is newer, the GPU is miles better than that old AMD trash they're using in the macbook pro, screen is 4k instead of that retina marketing nonsense, it uses DDR4 memory, USB Type C (thunderbolt 3), and most importantly the screen has an infinity display (the 4k version is glossy). The list goes on.

The Macbook pro 2016 next month will be something to look for. It should be in Australia by the end of June or early July, but the AUD/USD has lost nearly 9% in last month, so expect to pay over $4000 for a comparable macbook pro.

    • +5

Ugh that Lenovo Yoga 3 pro has crappy specs compared to this.. Doesn't even have a i5/i7 or 15" screen.

    • +2

The Yoga is not a direct comparison to the XPS 15. The Yoga is actually closer to the XPS 13. The biggest difference is the inclusion of a stand-alone video card (Geforce GTX960M), which is capable of running most games at a very reasonable frame rate at medium-high settings. Whether or not this is worth $2.5k+ is up to you. For some people, the design of the current XPS series is just gorgeous and worth it.

    • +1

This has a substantial amount more horsepower than that Lenovo. Not even comparable.

    • +1

Pretty sure the Yoga 3 Pro only comes with a Intel Core M - at your price at least - (you can't even compare it to the latest gen i7). Furthermore, i'm pretty sure it only comes with an integrated Intel 5xxx graphics card, which doesn't even deserve to be in the same range as the GTX 960M - a dedicated graphics card (aka games are very playable on the XPS, even on high graphics for certain games).

Then there's the other differences like 4k vs WHQD+ screens, 16GB ram vs 8GB, more ports, bigger battery, 15-inch screen vs 13.3-inch etc. I could go on but you get my point, they make huge differences.

Glad you're happy with your purchase, but calling it overpriced is subjective to your opinion at best. Let's not forget, build quality is exceptional on the XPS series, the Lenovo isn't as good.

    • +1

You are kidding right? That Levono is Intel Core M processor vs the Dell's i7 processer, higher resolution display, dedicated high end GPU and bigger SSD on the Dell.

    • As stated above, they are completely different systems. The only similarities are that they have a solid state drive, windows and is a laptop.

Try running a CAD system/3d applications/games/ video rendering etc. You'll soon see what product can do it/do it better.

I can't believe people still compare these gaming laptops from small companies to premium prosumer laptops like the Dell Xps. You're paying for more than just the hardware. Look at the amount of effort that has gone into the XPS15's design and not to mention the thunderbolt 3, USB Type C, and Dell's amazing screen.

    • +2

      Different market entirely.

Small form factor (for a 15 inch), infinity edge (pretty much no bezel), QHD, over half a kilo lighter, (as mentioned) 500GB HDD (this is an extra $435 on metabox), touch screen. EASILY $1k worth of extras above that one linked to.

I'm willing to admit these Dells are too expensive, but we need to at least somewhat compare apples and apples.

      • QHD

        It's UHD.

        500GB HDD

Incorrect. It uses a 512 GB PCIE NVME SSD (x4 speed).

I'm willing to admit these Dells are too expensive

Dell have always been a reliable PC manufacturer. I have about 1000 of their latitude laptops at my workplace. All still chugging a long and we didn't have to fork out $3000 for each one. The XPS line has been one of the most if not the most successful laptop line in the world. They are selling as well as Lenovo's thinkpad series.

        • Okay…so we're making exactly the same point. Glad I now know that SSDs are faster. Thanks.

        • @carlscott1982:

I meant that 'HDD' is an abbreviation for hard disk drive (mechanical disks).

      • -2

Actually, yes, I didn't notice the UHD screen. That definitely makes up for the price difference in my original comparison. Although, UHD on a 15 inch laptop seems a bit of an overkill.

        • They have UHD on 12" laptops these days.

On Dell Latitude, HP and Toshiba laptops.

    • I using a Dell XPS M1530 from 2008..
with 4GB ddr2 RAM and SSD
      Still going strong….
I had hardware problems during the 3yrs premium warranty(paid extra) period….

    • +2

What should I use to look at cats all day

  • +1

I should also mention that this same laptop can be bought for $2099 from the Dell Outlet in "As New" condition. I have seen about 10 of these in the last 2 months.

      • +1

        Trust me mate.

Exactly the same unit. There is an advantage for Dell. They get to clear out used stock. The Dell XPS laptops on the Dell Outlet are usually purchased very quickly, so you probably won't see them unless you're quick.
Go to whirlpool's Dell Refurbished thread and you'll see people posting about good deals such as the one I mentioned before.
This Dell XPS15 is not a new laptop. It has been on the market for about 6 months.

        4th Gen Broadwell

        5th generation

        • @Cheap Charlie:

Sorry man. They were the 1080p version.

They were selling refurbished Dell XPS13 with Iris graphics for $1850 and Dell Xps 13 for $1200 at the same time.

    • +2

You are incorrect, those units @ $2099 seem similar however they weren't 4K Touch displays ;)

      • OH SHIT! YES YOU ARE RIGHT!

  • +1

Bought an exact spec'ed unit couple of months ago at Dell Outlet for $2.5k, no regrets so far but occasionally when it resumes from sleep the bluetooth may not reconnect successfully (I connect to my Z5500 via Logitech Bluetooth receiver). Other than that it's a great compromise between portability (smaller than normal 15" and not too heavy) and performance. It boots up under 20 seconds, runs Lightroom at a reasonable speed and apparently runs current gen games OK (haven't really tried it). Battery life isn't great but it's not that bad. My experience varies but under heavy load editing photos it gives around 3 hours depending on screen brightness. 4k (gloss) screen is great but honestly if I had to do it again I might just settle for a 1080 for better battery life and easier connectivity. I don't have a 4k external monitor and the USB-C to HDMI dongle is $$. If you're dont mind the form/weight the metabox might be a good option too.

    • +1

btw, that bluetooth issue you just mentioned (not reconnecting after sleep/ hibernate) is due to a firmware issue with the BT adapter. I had the exact same issue and was stumped for a few weeks trying to play around with the power management settings to resolve it myself. After several troubleshooting sessions with Dell consumer support, finally issue was resolved by Dell ProSupport. If you check your event logs, you will see some errors regarding the bluetooth adapter. You will need to contact Dell and get them to investigate your event logs before they get prosupport to help fix the problem. However, once the firmware is updated, no more BT sleep wake issues. Hope this helps you!

      • Would you mind posting a link to the firmware? I'd rather not have to deal with support if I can avoid it.

  • Dear Dell,

Please, PLEASE put an XPS13 or 15 on the Dell outlet 1 week before EOFY at a price that is lower than this.
I want one. I want one BAD.
I also want the instant tax write off for my business to help with 'buyer remorse'.

    Sincerely,

    Me.

P.S. Please hurry…if Microsoft give a great deal on a Surface Pro 4 I won't have enough money for your XPS.

    • +1

note, there's an XPS 13 at 15% off (not outlet though)

      • Thanks for that reminder. Thats my benchmark price for the outlet. Hoping to get a refurb or 'as new' around 1800ish. ☺

    • Thank you for validating my assumptions regarding these two devices.

  • I don't know about Dell.
My last Dell Latitude D520 for work wasn't very nice. Poor screen. Slow disk. Hot under the palm rest.

    • This one is the best DELL device.

    • This one is the best DELL device.

  • Came here to see the whinging responses when the exorbitant prices were pointed out.
Nice that it happens outside a MacBook Pro post for once

  • in the defense of this laptop you get loads of features for 2.5k compared to a similarly priced apple product.

  • Oops…just noticed that I'm running out of disk space already lol

Can anyone tell me what would be the best way to add more space to this configuration (512gb - 4k)?

    • +1

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/249277

Get one of these? I don't store any media on the laptop unless I really have to.

      • Not even music?

        • +1

A bit of Spotify but I don't have a huge library so wouldn't take more than 10gb? Maybe it's your games, assuming you're a gamer?

        • @chanraymond:
Yeah I have lots of games

    • I've just got a USB 3.0 enclosure with a 512GB SSD in it.
A cleaner option would be to get a 2.5" HDD + (internal) 2.5" HDD bracket + cable + smaller battery and replace the large battery. But with this option you sacrifice battery and $$… But that is an option.

    • Thanks Chans

        Here's a How-to from Dell if you're interested:
        http://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/19/xps-15-9550-lap…

And here are the part numbers:
Part Number: 3FDY3 - Hard drive bracket
        Part Number: XDYGX - Cable, Hard Drive, SATA 7MM, 9550 / 5510
        Part Number: 3XYT5 - Grommet, Hard Drive, Rubber, 9550 / 5510

I don't have the part number for the smaller battery though…

  • Link not working!!!

  • Wish they made a 15", i5 dual core, 1080, non-touch, no GPU version for say $1,500. I reckon that would sell like hotcakes because of the infinity display. And the battery life would be fantastic.

Can someone please tell me how a laptop with a GTX960m for $2.5k is a deal ?
    Shouldn't we expect at least a GTX 970m ?

  • I got this laptop at the beginning of April when it was 15% off at JBHiFi. At first I was amazed with this beauty. It was blazing fast, it was stunning, it was almost what I wanted it to be. Until it all turned into a nightmare. A few days later I noticed what's called 'coil whine noise'. A very annoying, high pitch buzzing sound coming from the area where the cord is plugged into the machine. Then both speakers started producing crackling noise. It turned out that the Dell EQ that comes with the audio driver pushes the speakers way above their capabilities and limits. I turned the EQ off… it reduced the crackling but it never got rid of it. Oh, there was also an issue with the spacebar key. It was squeaking like a pig getting… ehm… tickled ;-) At this point I was quite upset and extremely disappointed. I really wanted to keep the laptop but I could not justify all the faults and lack of quality control. Long story short - after reading many forums (I normally stay away from forums because I know there are people finding issues or faults only by reading such, as if they were almost looking for them), after many phone calls to absolutely useless Dell Support, after getting the actual power adapter replaced (no, it did not fix the buzzing sound issue), it got even more frustrating when out of the blue the network card failed leaving me with no internet connection at all. I gave up. Thankfully my local JBHiFi agreed to to replace the unit for me. I had to wait for about 9 days as they had no stock but I was so excited, hoping that this time there will be no dramas involved at all… It is always good to be a dreamer ;-) The new unit was producing the same crackling sound from the speakers, the coil whine noise was louder than ever and to top all up - one of the fans was rattling like crazy. I returned the laptop to the store and got my money back without any problems. I was very disappointed but very happy than I bought it from JBHiFi. If I got it from Dell, from what I've learned it takes them around 4 weeks to replace any faulty units (if approved of course) and some been waiting months to get their money back. I am not discouraging any of you from purchasing this machine, maybe I simply wasn't lucky… but what about all those forums and thousands of users out there with similar stories? And to those who never had any issues with the laptop - I envy you, big time!

    • +1

That's a bummer, I haven't had any issues with mine.

To the idiots who negged my above comment. This is what an Ozbargain looks likes, it's already a fantastic price for the specs.
Notice no pissy GTX950m (which is re-badged last gen chip) which is inside the dell for $2.5K.
