      • +3

Eh. Only decent because there's very little competition with the product

      • +2

I know it's likely because of price-point advertising, but that 16GB upgrade is definitely a no-brainer, and pretty much the same with the 240GB M.2 SSD

      • Thanks, you beat me to it :)

  • +1

There's lots of variations but you can upgrade the 8GB 2133MHz RAM to 16GB 2400MHz RAM for $40.
    Plus you can add a M.2 SSD for $40-120GB, $59-240GB, $189-480GB.

    Is this dog-friendly?

    • +3

Kong Computers is Dog friendly :) but I don't think this laptop would be haha!

    • +3

      My dog loves his kong

  • So $1549 with recommended upgrades, plus cost of OS, which is likely Windows as this is a gaming machine. $1600 ish all up. $1440 after trs if you share your limit with someone

  • +2

Add 100 for the ssd and ram upgrade and its a pretty decent system

  • I'm going to sound a bit sore, but 3 days ago on the P650RE deal you said there weren't any upcoming deals on the P640RE…
Now I'm feeling a bit silly for spending $100 extra…

edit- that sounded a bit whiney, I'm actually really happy with your companies service

    • Can you send me a PM?

      Kris

    • +2

hey i ordered this exact model a week ago didnt get it till Tuesday but Kris did upgrade me to the intel 8260 wireless card and got me a copy of the division as was ordered and paid for before the end of May so i dont feel too bad about it, its a great laptop but coming off using a macbook for 2 years i've forgotten alot of the windows quirks and shortcuts.

The cheapest ASUS with a 970M with the EBAY 20% off deal is this one:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-ROG-17-3-FHD-i7-1TB-128GB-SS…

      $2,865.00….

Metabox P670RE with same specs from Kong= $2157 (Other benefits include not being from Kogan…)

    • +12

I don't believe there is a cheaper GTX970M laptop on the market, but happy to investigate if you show me one :)

After posting a deal on OzBargain I always have the thought that Australia should get rid of the Senate and install the OzBargain Forum posters instead :)
      That'll sort out the country…quick smart :)
      Kris

Not knocking this deal because it certainly looks like good value, but anyone in the market should consider that new GPUs are on the way and it certainly looks like new CPUs (Kaby Lake) are potentially on the way.

    • -4

This looks like better all round value…

      • +3

The Metabox units that we are selling are brand new, not second hand.
        Kris

      • +3

It's a decent option if you want a cheaper laptop, but it's second hand. The metabox is better, if you can stretch a few hundred more you'd be nuts not to get this metabox with the 16gb ram and 256gb ssd upgrades, plus gtx 970m is almost twice as fast as gtx 960m.

      • refurb with 960. The metabox is way better

    • +3

A laptop with the new gear would cost about $500 more than this at release, so it's not like waiting for the new gear will net you anything unless you have a bigger budget to start with, and the old models don't get cheaper than this anyway. So this deal makes sense if you want a good value gaming laptop anytime soon.

  • Hows the battery on this? Or is there a way of upgrading the battery life?

    • +1

According to a review linked in the OP link, it should last around 2 hours on light use.

  • -3

This is one of Clevo barebone laptops, isn't it? Overheating, extreme fan noise, dead pixels on a display, poor battery life…Clevo's laptops have received so much criticism yet it seems like the company has strived after all. I am tempted, but I still have my doubts on Clevo's laptops so I will probably pass.

    • +1

Gaming laptops typically have poor battery life. If you think overheating is bad, then you have never tried a 14" Razer or equivalent. The bigger models (15 and 17) of these Clevos have triple fans in them that are apparently as good or better than the other named brand models. They arent using cheap heat paste either from the product descriptions, so it should be good.

    • +1

Mine doesn't overheat. I use a cheap laptop stand with fans to give it more airflow. Definitely noisy and the power drains the battery fast, but that's unavoidable if you want said power. Display is beautiful and clear in sunlight. Everything else is top notch: keyboard, touchpad, portability, finish, ports…

    • +1

i've got this exact model had it for less then a week but its great value for money, no overheating issues, fan noise can be adjusted depending what your using it for no louder then standard gaming pc, no dead pixels some have had issues with backlight bleed but metabox test them all in the build process and mine has none, battery life could be better but not really bothered as i have it plugged in to power 70-80% of the time

    • I own a p650re and it never overheats, not noisy, and doesn't have any dead pixels. I get 3-4 hrs max on battery on average use, which is normal for a gaming laptop. If u want long battery life then metabox is not for u. .

    Bargain!

  • Damn… flying out on the 20th, looking to buy one at the end of June! Slightly too early if not I might have bitten :)

    • +1

We could definitely get one to you before the 20th if you wanted to claim the TRS (Tax Refund Scheme GST) at the airport if you hold a foreign passport.
Otherwise we could hold off on shipping it to you for when you return :)
      Kris

      • +1

It looks like my info about holding a foreign passport was wrong.

        Who can get a refund?
TRS is open to all overseas visitors and Australian residents, except for operating air and sea crew.

See government website on TRS here.
        https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Ente/Tour/Are-you-a-traveller

        Kris

      • Aaaah apologies I missed a vital part of that sentence. I mean I'm flying out on 20th August, so I can only buy a laptop after 20th June :) Maybe you'll have an another awesome deal then, keep us posted!

        • Haha, cool. Yeah I thought it was 20th June.
          No worries.
At least it was a good exercise in me learning more about TRS, Haha!
          Cheers
          Kris

  • There are some solid videos by a youtuber called htwingnut for this laptop if anyones interested.

  • Hi there, what is the carbon fibre wrap? Is it replaces the case?

What is the weight of this with n without hdd, with n without carbon case.

    Thanks!

    • +1

The carbon fibre wrapping is like a covering over the surface of the laptop. It has a raised bumpy feel to it too if you run your finger/hand over it.
Remember how as kids we used to cover our school books to make them last longer :) it's a bit like that but obviously a lot more professional looking and better quality.

It wouldn't really increase the weight or anything or make more rigid.

Weight is 2KG with battery, probably add about 50g for a M.2 SSD and/or 200g for a hard drive.
      Kris

      • +1

2kh is not too heavy at all…
        Thanks!

  • +2

Is there a deal for bigger screens 17"?

  • if i bought this…could i get the gst back when leaving overseas ?

if i could would i need to leave the country (to "gift" it away) before EOFY ?

  • Hi there,
Is the 3k screen upgrade different to the one on the metabox website? Just noticed that it costs $100 more.

    • It's exactly the same 3K panel.
Basically it's $100 more on this deal to keep the overall price the same as the normal P640RE.
In a nutshell, the $100 saving on this P640RE deal isn't for the 3K panel version.
This is because the panels aren't interchangeable, the 3K version is a completely different unit.
This deal is for the 14" FHD 1920x1080 Matte 60Hz LED version.

      I hope this makes sense.
      Kris

  • Awesome deal, so tempted.

  • +1

Is there some way we can upgrade the battery life on these?

    • +3

The battery is internal on this model. I assume that we can get another one for you. It might involve unscrewing about 10-15 screws to get to it. I'll check and confirm with Metabox on Monday :)
      Kris

      • +1

Actually Metabox were closed today due to a public holiday in WA. I'll find out tomorrow.
        Kris

    • +1

Not really, unless some new upgrade came out. Not sure on this yet. A replacement battery will be $179. It is internal.
      Kris

      • Thanks for getting back to me! I'll have a think about it.

        • OK no worries :)
          Kris

  • Hey Kris,

        • +1
