That's right and here are the leaks which apparently came from a Polish magazine.

It is actually slower than the 970 which is funny because after AMD's announcement, people said it would be between the 980 and 980ti.

Hopefully those benchmarks aren't indicative and Nvidia get some real competition.

      • Strange how does a 380x beat a 970 OC in anything? Sounds like it is full of CPU bottlenecks so year wouldn't really trust those benchmarks. Amateur hour at best.

What gets me more is that Metro and the witcher use physx and gamerworks which is heavily favours Nvidia and the 380 still beat it in one of the benches lol.

        Basically 970 beats 480 in direct x 11 while the 480 beats the 970 in dx12.

  • such a let down by amd they did xfire beating a 1080 so i thought it would be 980 level but nope

    • +3

WE have no real performance numbers from REAL reviews.. but my guess is its on par with a stock GTX980 in DX11 games and at or above GTX980ti in DX12 games using Asynchronous compute … Overall its a more future proof product that runs cool, and uses next to no power! :)

The leaked unofficial benchmarks have it on par with an overclocked GTX 970

Its pretty much a R9 390 (non X) in performance overall

    • They had 2 480s beating a 1080 an Ashes of the Singularity, that's basically pointing to 390 performance.

    • +1

Depends how you look at it.

Were you really expecting a 350 dollar card to outperform a $1000+ card?

However here we have a 350 dollar card trading blows with a 650 dollar cards. I think AMD conceded the high end market for now to Nvidia but went we will smash them in the bang for buck department.

  • Finally here comes the real stuff. The rise of team red!

      • Your completely wrong, there is nothing at that price that competes.

        • -2

Completely wrong? So AMD is a profitable business and their cards are technically superior to Nvidia's???

          WOW

    • -8

Not a sustainable way to run a business

      https://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ:AMD&fstype=ii

They have 3.2 billion USD in assets. They are losing 660 million USD a year.

      Doesn't paint a rosie picture going forward…

I'm glad AMD exist though, they encourage Intel and Nvidia to be better - and they reduce the price gouging to some extent…

      • I feel sorry for them, they were completely (profanity) over by intel back in the day. Even though intel got fined billions for their anti competitive behaviour it was too late as AMD had to wind down all their R&D and factories just to stay afloat. They have been playing catch up ever since.

However this video card is impressive and I really hope it turns a corner for them. They aren't trying to compete with Nvidia's high end models yet but seem determined on destroying Nvidia in the bang to buck department which are the lower and middle tiers which the majority of video card purchases are. However it makes you think if that the pricing is of their middle end tiers what will be the pricing of their flagships when they are released?

the XFX RX 480 8GB is SOLD OUT and the price is £212.99 NOT £193.64

    • +4

since the delivery is to outside the EU, there is no VAT applied (as mentioned in the Original Post). So the total is £193.64 delivered.

  • I did it anyway…came out at $361.45 w/delivery…if it's crap I can live with that.

  • +2

$4,499 for the 980? Must be getting rare..

  • I would wait for savage price drops in the next few weeks. People are saying it won't happen because of the price drops (or lack of) for the gtx 1080 - well, that was because there's no other competition for that card: no single card has been able to drive 4K with good settings before. This card has valid competition already.

    • +6

The 480 doesn't even compete with the 1070, let alone the 1080…

      • +3

        it competes with the GTX970…

      • +3

Can't agree more, and some people just don't get that do they…

970 is not 1070, you need to add 100 for 970 to become 1070, its simple math!

      • It isn't supposed to, if there was a 1060 it would be competing with that but I am guessing the 1060 will be delayed for some time since what AMD just released would smash it performance and price wise if the 1060 reported specs were true. The 490 and 490x which is getting released at the end of the year is what will compete with the 1070/1080.

If I was Nvidia I would be worried rumours say it can do 9000 geflops compared with the 1080's 8000 and thats the 490 not the x version. While not everything it seems AMD can produce cards much cheaper than Nvidia can. I think Nvidia will have to rush the next gen forward in order to compete but who knows they have an awesome marketing team perhaps they wont have to.

All the performance rumours about the 480 seemed to be accurate and given the specs and price of the 480 it seems really believable that the 490/x would be on par with that.

I hope this isnt a sign of how their ZEN CPUs are gona be… i really want competition but AMD has time and time again disappointed.

I still remeber the day when the ATI 9700Pro came out and whipped Nvidia's Ti 4600 (flagship nvidia card at the time) in the ass. I was like "is this realife?" buuuuut i guess that wont happen again.

AMD will be releasing their high end cards later in the year (possibly early next year). These cards are their mid tier cards.

      • people just don't seem to get it.. NVIDIA can have the high ground and fastest GPU title, AMD are aiming at the low to mid range market with last gen top tier performance for cheap (well cheap before we get the Aussie vendors sticking their slice into the price). Why sell 1000s of cards when you can sell MILLIONS?

  • even if these cards are slightly slower then the 390 series the newer-tech lower TPD and cooler temps make them a better buy. especially for people interested in crossfire.

im still waiting for official benchmarks before I buy

The GBP isn't really weak compared to the AUD; $1.50/£1 levels were seen around 4 years back.

Don't shop GBP in the expectation of a great deal unless you're paying in USD!

    • That was due to a high AUD value at the time.

  • Am I missing something? Shows as £212.99

    • VAT is removed at checkout to bring the final price down.

      • +1

        Sorry my bad

  • Is this the final product or will there be custom coolers in the following weeks.

    • +2

Custom coolers with higher clock speed coming soon.

  • RX480 to be priced at $420 in AU

    • Nope it's $379 for the 8gb model and $319 for the 4gb version. Well at least that's what PCCG have the XFX models priced at.

  • Really considering this. I have an RX290 that's just way too loud. I might wait to see how this one reviews tho.

  • +1

Its says that the 970 & 980 cannot be delivered to Australia. :(

    • +1

Looks like Amazon sold out, now it's 3rd party sellers who won't deliver to Aus

    • 970 is back

  • +4

FYI for those that prefer Australian stock, the RX 480 8GB is $379 at PC Case Gear (4GB is $319).

    • awesome thanks.. ordered. These are XFX brand and clocked higher and yet cheaper than the other brands.

    • wow the 319 is good value. too bad its sold out now.

  • hmm looks like PCCG XFX stock is all sold out, interesting to note the other $480 cards have dropped to $449.
