  • Ingredients on Royal Canin eg Rottweiler
rice, dehydrated poultry protein, animal fats, vegetable protein isolate*, maize, hydrolysed animal proteins, minerals, vegetable fibres

are there foods out there which cost similar but have better ingredients (ie not fillers which are cheap) and are actually better for your dog?
If yes, then avoid this :)

    • what would you recommend?

  • black hawk..

    • i just did a quick search for black hawk and it comes in 3 varieties for adult dogs- chicken, lamb & fish. Royal Canin is categorised based on the dog's actual breed- is that so or is that just a marketing gimmick?
I am just thinking out loud here- Royal Canin has fillers but is made specifically for the dog's breed whereas blackhawk have quality ingredients but is just general in nature. Even though Royal Canin has cheap fillers, do you think that it would better than a brand that does more generic dog food seeing the RC food has been designed for that specific breed?

      • More of a marketing gimmick mate..black hawk, canidae, Artemis, wellness core are the quality brands out there..I feed combo of black hawk and wellness core..was feeding hills science which is completely rubbish. Pup now has a shinny and smooth coat..

      • breed specific just a gimmick

here are the ingredients for three different breeds, all aged 4, all royal canin

        1. rice, vegetable protein isolate*, dehydrated poultry protein, maize, animal fats, hydrolysed animal proteins, beet pulp, vegetable fibres, minerals
        2. rice, dehydrated poultry protein, animal fats, vegetable protein isolate*, maize, hydrolysed animal proteins, minerals, vegetable fibres
        3. dehydrated poultry protein, maize, rice, wheat, animal fats, vegetable protein isolate*, hydrolysed animal proteins, vegetable fibres
        4. dehydrated poultry protein, maize, maize flour, animal fats, wheat, rice, maize gluten, hydrolysed animal proteins,

most of the ingredients are similar if not the same
Ive chosen small dogs and big dogs,'all of them have cheap fillers

        • wow thanks stockastics & docians! Here I was thinking I was buying quality (and expensive!) stuff for my dog! The other brands you guys mentioned are around the same price I am paying at the moment so it should be fairly easy making the switch.
          Can't thank you guys enough!

        • no worries Zinger
Royal Canin is owned by Mars, and by its marketing muscle, it had me fooled a while ago
Thankfully Ive made the switch, and my best bud is better for it :)

  • +1

I would recommend Canidae grain free, Ivory Coat, Stayloyal, Wellness core, Meals for Mutts, Black Hawk etc
