      many months the ago

that's how it works, price normally goes down.

    • -2

you wouldn't of even got $120 after fees and postage.

      • Thank you for that useless bit of info. I'm sure eisniwre is quite aware of what he/she got. which is still more than $99

        • -5

what are you their spokes person or just cant help butting in?

        • +2

@Robster33: kinda seems like you butted in first.

came with the Exynos Octa chipset

Afaik, they all do, unless youre american.

  • Isn't this just a glorified cardboard VR?

    • +10

if you dont own samsung product then yes, if you do it does more and is worth it

    • +8

Not really, it has Occulus hardware in it to provide a much better experience than a Google Cardboard device because it has much better head tracking although it isn't anywhere as good as Rift, Vive or the Razer offering.

It's the best-in-class cheap VR solution ATM.

    • Google are moving on from the Cardboard with their new Daydream VR platform. In order to provide compelling VR experiences they are mandating that all compatible phones have low-persistence display panels, high-performance SOCs, and low-latency IMUs (sensors). This is so VR experiences can be more refined, be more intense, last longer, and all without making people feel unwell. Additionally, the platform will include a rich software ecosystem (essentially a subset of the Google play store for VR apps/games/media etc), and a user interface that is accessible from within VR that allows users to easily switch from one experience to the next without ever having to remove the headset.

That's essentially what Samsung are already offering with their Gear VR platform, and have been for some time.

  • Compatible with Note 4?

    • Nope, Note 5.

    • +2
      • Compatible with Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7 and future models (each sold separately). Software update may be required.

Just FYI on whoever bought this and plan to use it on future Samsung flagship models:
If the rumor are true (Samsung Note 7, possible announcement on August 2), future Samsung flagship may use USB Type C and will not be compatible on this Gear VR.

Might be the reason why this Gear VR is on sale?

        • Everyone is moving to type C , rumour is Iphone 7 also is going to type C..

      • That is literally a 'hack'.

The cardboard variant is currently free at optus stores, for those who just want to try VR out without investing any money.

    • -1

That isn't a variant of any Samsung product and it it appears to be a Google Cardboard based design.

  • What kind of optics within this? Zeiss branded?

  • can anyone recommend a decent controller ?

  • This thing is horrible even for $100. Gives you maybe 30mins of entertainment till you've been through everything.

  • Can I use this to watch AFL app on HTC? Useful when I am in bed

    • It wouldn't work with HTC.

  • Can use it to watch netflix. My mate was using it!

Oculus Summer Sale is on now, so if you order the headset make sure to stock up on some apps straight away because the sale is going to end any minute:

I was lucky enough to get this for $45 brand new last week. Someone had it on ebay for $60, and I had a $25 voucher from the Seller Goals promotion. Very happy with it, using my Note 5.

  • IS this any different to the one they were giving away with any new S7 & S7 Edge?

  • What's a good comparable generic VR headset that can be used with Iphone 6 plus? or isn't there one? Sorry very new to this and interested. thanks

    • none

    • The Zeiss VrOne (I have one) will work, but only with the regular 6… there is a new Zeiss coming to market soon, the One Plus, which I believe will handle the 6+, or perhaps even the 7 when released. The One used specific caddies for each phone type for a very secure placement in the headset, as well as augmented reality setup. The new Zeiss has a universal caddie to fit most phones.

      See http://zeissvrone.tumblr.com

      • Thanks for that. Do you know if Zeiss VrOne or One+ has it own specific VR app like the Gear VR?
also regarding your experience with the Zeiss VrOne, is it a good VR comparable to the samsun Gear VR?

        • The Zeiss has several VR and AR apps. Not as well integrated an experience as the Samsung with its oculus store.

  • so this thing would be useless with a xiaomi or anything else not a samsung galaxy? has to be manufacturer specific?

  • be better if they just hurried up and posted the ones from their claimback before June…

  • sold out??

  • FWIW, I purchased this product from Optus bundled with the cheapest monthly I could get with the new Samsung 7. I don't use the Sammy as a phone (I use an iPhone 6) but for my clinical work as a psychologist where I use VR for anxiety treatments. See: http://flightwise.com.au/2015/05/12/psious/

I've been doing this work for 15 years with VR, and the latest use with the Gear VR is the best so far: more immersive and effective than my previous Windows-based VR setups. It's also portable.
Other components I use for greater immersion is the SkullCandy headset; Aura Basshaker speakers; and Buttkicker for extra "oomph".

Samsung Gear VR is cheapest way to get into effective VR experiences, but does require a Sammy phone - although you can use other phones not connected to the unit, but a fiddly workaround.

VR world splitting in two: mainframe tethered type, like Oculus and Vive; and mobile-phone based - less resolution and refresh rates, but for some purposes, sufficient.

The Gear can fog up, so keep a spectacle lens cloth nearby.

    Les Posen FAPS

    • Les Posen FAPS

      good on you.

    • Very interesting.

Despite following many tech sites, yours is the first mention I've seen of immersion therapy as a perfect application of VR.

Good stuff. Certainly beats holding up cards with photos of spiders!

    • +1

I also engage in therapeutic FAPS with the Gear VR. Seems to alleviate a build up of stress. MilkVr works great

    • Mobile VR does not offer less resolution than consumer-grade tethered VR. In fact all the Gear VR compatible phones have 2560x1440 OLED panels whereas all the tethered headsets (Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, OSVR HDK2**) have 2160x1200 panels (or two separate panels with the same combined resolution). In fact the highest resolution consumer VR setup would employ a smartphone with a 1440p RGB stripe LCD panel because of the higher subpixel resolution they offer compared to the equivalent pentile OLED panels used in all the products above (yes, there are 4K smartphones now, but I'm not sure how 4K they really are in terms of the extent to which they properly utilize their resolution). The problem with LCD tech though is that you can't have proper low-persistence operation, which is important.

Of course resolution is only one of the factors involved in producing an immersive and enjoyable experience.

(** the Playstation VR is an exception with a 1080p RGB OLED display, which is said to be superior to 1200p pentile OLED in many respects)

  • Should be free if you buy a Samsung phone.

  • had mine for a few days now and absolutely addicted
