$4000 2004 Holden Astra City 30K Vs $7000 2010 Hyundai Getz 40K

Hi Oz'Bargainers

Once more I would like to tap the knowledge of this community

We have the opportunity to buy an Holden Astra City, year 2004, with about 30K done. Only 1 owner
Travels were from home to Shops and Doctor, no long trip, elderly woman.
This at $4000

As an alternative I found on used car site a Hyundai Getz 2010 with about the same mileage. One owner.
Price is $7000
That's about all I know.

I did read that the maintenance on the Astra is substantial, parts are expensive, and there's always something wrong with the car.

For the Hyundai I did read that the car is solid and maintenance is much less.

But this could be my selective reading, as I like the Idea of owning a 2010 car much better then a 2004.
Thing is that my wife thinks the additional $3000 are not worth the difference, and she prefers to buy the Holden as we know where it came from.

What are the thoughts, experience of this community

Brother has a 2008 Hyundai Getz, drives it like a tank. Still going strong almost 200k's on the clock. Solid car. Only had battery swapped twice.

    Get both inspected.
Make sure the Astra has had the services done regularly, and as per the time period. 12 years old, it needs to have had the timing belt done etc.

That said, yes, Astra can have some major things go wrong. At least the Getz only just came out of warranty last year.

Main thing is to get both inspected, don't base any buying decision off cars you haven't seen in person. Go see the Getz, drive it etc… it could be a bucket of shit in person!

Oh and sub $8k for auto, I would imagine there's more choices than just that 1 Getz!

I discarted Fiat, Peugeot, Reanult, and the really small ones.

      • Fiat, Peugeot, Reanult

I would hope you would! I'm thinking more along the lines of Lancer, Swift, etc etc. The really common ones.

        Run a Carsales search of:
        Year - 2010 onwards
        Transmission - Auto
        KMs - Max 100,000
        Price - Max $8000

And arrange from year made - high to low

        See what else comes up

        • Dont like the "Kms max 100'000"

Comparing 30K to 40K is ok, bot not 100K
Also the year is > 2004
Also location NSW, The Astra il literally 50m down the road, don't want to spend a weekend to inspect a car.
          Transmission AUTO

Removing the tiny cars I found Getz 2010 and Getz 2008. 2010 seems better value

          P.S. I'm 6'2 … Getz "seems" ok.

          @cameldownunder:

The cars are ~6yrs old, you'll be hard pressed to find one sub-50,000km, and I highly doubt that anyone with mileage that low is actually servicing as per the proper requirements. So sure, if you want to spend more money on oil flushes rather than a simple oil and filter, then be my guest. I was being a bit more realistic.

don't want to spend a weekend to inspect a car.

It would be nice to have $7000 to just throw away like that.

          P.S. I'm 6'2 … Getz "seems" ok.

So am I, look for a Lancer

"It would be nice to have $7000 to just throw away like that."
Lets not get judgemental here. Right ?

If I would have $7000 to throw away, I would go to the closest car dealership, and buy the first car under that price.

I will check the logbook, go for a drive and maybe have someone inspecting the car.
But driving to QLD or SA is just not in for me. THen it's no car at all.

        • @Spackbace:
          Looked for Mitsubishi Lancer, > 2004, < 60'000km, < $7500, AUTO.
          No results.

          QLD or SA

I never meant to have an Aus-wide search, I didn't think I needed to specify that :/

          Looked for Mitsubishi Lancer, > 2004, < 60'000km, < $7500, AUTO.

Pretty sure I just said not to be that picky

          Sigh

          You're not understanding.

Short trips are worse than long ones, so if the Astra has only ever done local trips for shopping etc then the engine will never have warmed up properly so those 30,000Km are a hard 30,000Km.
Plus my logic/theory is that after 10 years the rubber and plastic components in vehicles start to fail due to age.
As such, Km's become largely irrelevant on older cars. Seals start to crack/leak no matter how well cared for the vehicle might be.

I'd be going a newer vehicle, not necessarily the Getz though, cause that's significantly smaller than an Astra!

Do not buy a European small car, espeically the rebadged Opel….!

    • Yep, had trouble with my Vectra over in the UK and have heard horror stories from friends with Astras.

  • I wouldn't choose either of them. Look at Mazda 3 from around 2004. But I would expect the KM to be higher than 100,000 and also the price would be closer to 7k. They are very popular cars on the used market, reliable and retain value well. They drive nicely and have good looks for their age. That and Toyota Corolla would be what I would look at if in the market for a small used car.

    • Agree, our 2004 Mazda 3 has done almost 190,000km and never missed a beat. Only thing I've done since I bought it in 2010 is new tyres and a new battery, and will do the engine mounts on the next service for a smoother ride. I prefer it to our 2010 Mazda 3!

    • Agree, both car are pain in the a**.

Hyundai prior i30 is a piece of s***, just notice the car pull off the side and having the hazard light on is Old Hyundai and Mitz.

  • I'd choose the Holden Astra personally, due to lower k's and cheaper price, both cars are not going to be that expensive to service.
Resale etc i believe you'd lose more on the Hyundai and you won't gain much out of a slightly newer car other then some safety features..

saving $3.000 will also contribute a bit to services and maintenance.

lower k's is more important then year/age/type i'd say.

Nope. Just looking at the mileage does not paint a full picture.

Plus I often hear 15,000k's a year thrown around (approx 288km a week - quite reasonable for this country), so even the Getz is below that.

As others have said, if the Astra has only done 30,000k's, it may not have gotten to warm up properly ever and may not have been scheduled in line with the service records.

      • Agree. There is such a thing as too low kms for a normal car (not enthusiast/special model). I would be wary of a 10 year old car that has done less than 3,000km per year. I would consider one that has been used around 10,000km per year as low but reasonable kms - enough to keep things running smoothly, but not wear it out too much. That is a 10yo car should have around 100,000km on it.

I did buy a 20yo corolla with 140,000km on it, but it was owned by the little old lady type first, then for a few years by a mum that put around 10,000km per year on it (at least that's what I was told). The story satisfied me that the bugs would have been worked out from the little old lady runs and yet the car had very low kms for its age. This was a very cheap car, and also a Toyota so I wasn't at all concerned about breakdowns.

Why not get the best of both worlds and shop for an older Getz as it will be within your budget. Then you have the reliability and at the budget you are happy to spend. ie. best value.

My daughters both have 2010 getz's and they are great little cars. That price and only having done 40K is brilliant. Both my daughters paid 7K and their cars had done over 100K.

Saying that though, the astra is really cheap with low km. Might be better to get that and save the $$.

  • Of the two, I voted Getz.
But if 7K is the limit, I had a free flight up my sleeve and a trustworthy someone to have a quick look before flying up, I'd get this i30.

Simply because I prefer it comfort-wise (I'm also 188cm tall).

  • I dont know much about Getz but dont go for Astra. Google "Astra engine light" and you will find a lot of complains. Here is a random forum post from the net…

"hello my girlfriend drives at 03 astra and recently the engine light came on , so she took it to Holden because the car is under warranty they said it was her exhaust sensor or something that triggered it may have been bad fuel, anyway they turned it off and said if he comes back on we will need to replace it well its costs 461 to replace not including fitting costs, well shore enough it came back on the next day, now is this problem a big one or can it go without treatment????"

  • Thanks for all your input. Sadly my wife won, and we got the Astra. Didn't have the $3000 difference at hand.
