Whats price of JR Pass for - 7 days and 14 days?

Edit 1: i m going to keep my -ve vote until OP provide pricing.

    • HIS travel by far the cheapest, I've bought 12 passes from them - best price every time. They have offices in every major Aus city

  • +3

Sachi Tours has the passes for $4-6 cheaper and express shipping is already included.

  • +7

    Same price as here.
They also give you a free travel guide and rail map.
Used them 4 times and always get within 2 days

    • Looks like that the site "Japan Experience" is located in London/Paris/Japan and the pass is delivered by FedEx. Do I need a 28 degree card to avoid the bank fee? Thanks.

      • -1

        Yup.

        Not charged in AUD.

      • Nope they charge in AUD-
and yes I know they are overseas but always get via fedex within 2 days. Best service from all the ones I used.
Made the mistake once of using JTB Australia and took about 2 weeks to arrive.

        • Thanks for the info:) Save me the trip of going to H.I.S.to buy the rail pass!

  • You have free shipping everyday!

  • Hi Rep, Any specials on NEX, or other transport from Narita to Tokyo (Shinjuku) return please?

    • +3

Narita to Shinjuku and return will be 4000 JPY (14 days validity). Or use your JR Pass to travel on NEX for free. And you can buy NEX return ticket at Narita airport.

      • -1

Or just by a regular ticket for a couple of hundred yen.

        • +1

          You mean non NEX?

        • @pyramid: can't exactly recall. Semi express about ¥800 ( I was paying for 1 adult and 3 kids so just fed in the money). Stopped 4 or 6 times. What's the hurry? Its Japan. Savour the moment and experience.

      • I used an airport bus from Narita to Tokyo Station and it was 1000 JPY … (it had the advantage that I didn't need to walk to Terminal 2 where the trains are as Jetstar arrives in Terminal 3 … so same time)

I'm in Tokyo at the moment. I previously lived in Japan for 4 years. Unless you're trying to cram a lot of cities into a short space of time e.g. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, etc then a JR pass is good. If you're just doing Tokyo and maybe Kyoto/Osaka or another city then I'd strongly suggest getting a bus. Myself and 3 kids just went Tokyo-Sendai (same distance as Kyoto/Osaka by bus. Whilst it took an extra 4 hours it was only ¥7500/ US$75 for the 4 of us one way. It was a good chance to wind down and chill and we didn't see another foreigner and met a lot of Japanese people I.e. more grass roots. Nice. I think there is too much emphasis on JRPasses.

The only fiddly thing with booking a bus ticket was needing to enter our names in katakana (the "alphabet" for "foreign" names/things) but there are plenty of online sites that will do the conversion. And you can just copy + paste. The bus sites have an "English" site otherwise google translate does a good job.

There are over night buses if you want to avoid a hotel and save. That's cool.

    • +1

Ok, that's pretty cool man. Thanks for that. I would have done this last time, but we didn't have 4 hours to lose. Next time I'll definitely try it - Love hanging out with the locals.

      • +3

Yeah id rather spend 4 hours walking the streets of kyoto than on a tour bus tbh.

        • +1

Yeah maybe I'm sad but a few hours on the Bullet every few days was one of my highlights. Watching the scenery out of windows with the people I love and a can of ice coffee will hopefully always be in my memories.

        • I guess it depends on your situation, but some of the best times I've had was being "stuck" with the locals.

        • +1

@jjno41: I liked watching the scenery from the shinkansen too :) Especially while sipping on some local sake :D

Why is it so expensive to use the rail there?

    • +3

Because it runs on time, reliable and clean.

    • +1

These passes are expensive as you can use the bullet trains with minimal restrictions. I did a day trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima (800km) last time I was there which I wouldn't have done if I didn't have the pass. I also did another return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto making the pass well worth it. These trains run at almost 300km too so it doesn't take nearly as long as you think. Works out way cheaper and more convenient than having to fly around the country.

    • It's not that bad. There's various day passes and what not. The above rail pass provides you access to all JR trains, up to the bullet train, barring the Nozomi, which is the super express that'll get you from Tokyo to Osaka 20 minutes quicker (So nothing missed by not getting to use it).

The reality though is unless you are going to make 2 return trips from Tokyo to Narita, or a return trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima, there is better value to be had by buying tickets individually (For a 7 day pass)

      • Correction : Jr pass can not be used on Nozomi and Mizuho both.

        • Spot on. I keep forgetting about the Mizuho service!

      • Not sure why I can't edit my post, but I was meant to write "The reality though is unless you are going to make 2 return trips from Tokyo to Osaka", not Narita

    • These are only available to tourists and using the bullet train is probably the most viable option for travellers wanting to go to multiple cities taking into account the price and time required to get domestic flights.

    • There are cheaper options like Seishun 18 Kippu (on sale during school holidays) 11850 JPY for 5 days where you can take all JR 'Local' and 'Rapid' trains. However it will take way longer with multiple transfers to complete your long distance journey.

    Recently got back from Japan
    Paid this

    Origin (City): Tokyo Japan (TYO)

    Destination (City): Tokyo Japan (TYO)

    Traveller(s): 2 adult(s) at $526.00 each

    Booking Status: notBooked

Comments: JAPAN RAIL PASS 14 DAYS ORDINARY

    Food for thought guys.

    • Can you clarify this? So you're saying you bought it cheaper?
Or that you just spent your time in Tokyo and this is how much you spent in train costs.
      Cheers

  • I'd check these people are authorised to sell JR Passes first by looking at the list on the official website of resellers. Travel scams are rife.

  • +1

How can this stay up as a deal when sachitours sells it slightly cheaper? How is it a "deal"???

    • Because it has got +ve votes. I do not know on what basis people are upvoting this deal.
