No Internet Available at New House

Hi all,

I've just moved into a new property and have found out that there is no ADSL available due lack of ports / Telstra RIM. Called many providers they all said the same thing.

So my question is: Am I doomed to a life of mobile internet? Or is there a course of action I can take to make wired internet available?

Thanks in advance,
Grant

FIL recently got satellite internet, 500GB/month for like $80-$90/month - basically ADSL prices. Could be an option?

Who is FIL? Google doesn't seem to know either

Vivid wireless for $89 unlimited http://www.vividwireless.com.au/

  • What about Cable, that's on the Gold Coast in a lot of places.
Have you tried On The Net for adsl, they have their own equipment in a lot of coast exchanges so may help. Give them a call, local folk and answer the call quickly. That's who I'm with.

Also My sister recently couldn't get adsl, no ports. But after about a week or two ports were available and could be connected, that was with TELSTRA.

    • Yeah I was with onthenet at my previous place. They've given me the same answer unfortunately

  • You could always use POTS as a last resort. It worked well for years for most people.

  • A little off topic, but does anyone know if they have adsl2 or nbn in upper coomera?

Type the address in the non site or even telstras site and it will tell you.

  • Is that even possible? Im surprised because I thought every house has to at least be connected to some form of telco exchange, unless you are living in the middle of no where totally alone from all forms of civilisation.

Yep but you need extra technology between you and the exchange in this case and that technology is full with prior customers, so unless someone moves house you are snookered (for wired)

Wireless has lots of options. (with an added expense) -remote mines even get internet ~at a cost :)

      • People moving into new sub-divisions are finding it on many areas - Telstra is not laying cables or building towers.

In our street in Brisbane - no NBN - any problem n the street, the tech has had the Line crumble when they touch it. From the street to our house is completely not functioning. They will replace but we had Optus cable in the street so went with them. NBN - when NBN Gets to our street snd many otgers, they will use cable not the lines, hence just patch jobs.

  • Make sure you don't have Optus or Telstra cable running past your house by entering your own address on the cable internet "can i get it" page of both companies. If you still can't find it enter a neighbours address just in case.

If you do have it … well happy days as far as performance, not so happy days if you are not in an "NBN area" because this means either Telstra or Optus are the only non-ADSL option available to you.

Or else … no idea, good luck :|

    • no such thing as optus cable on the gold coast .

  • I dont know where you are but is skymuster an option?

Malcolm Turnbull want's to know if the internet is so important to you, why did you move there?

  • Do any of your neighbours have internet? Enter an arrangement$$ with them. Set up a router/WiFi extender or run a 50 meter cat cable?

  • Yes check with neighbours.
Also try to use a different address. Say use the one closer to the main road. Some developers use new address not known to utilities companies.

telcos will only use the official council address no matter what developers might call the address .

Does your area have Optus Home Wireless Broadband cover? I had to use mobile broadband because there wasn't a phone line available for me in the previous studio I rented, but thankfully the Optus service was excellent.

    • +1 to Optus wireless home broadband. But they recently changed their terms so max payment increase from $80 to $120 pm.

  • We have nbn but wish to move, but as a priority it would have to be to another nbn area. Not saying our nbn is totally faultless. Paying $55 (no contract) with Belong for 100GB with wireless modem at basic speed. Better than what we had before though.
