Still got my 820 from 2012 here, great little phone.

      • +1

Windows phones users are a strange lot like that ;-)

    • Depends. The newer sales figures give WP around 0.7%. Actual usage will be a bit higher since people still hang onto their 520s and such, the especially in developing markets.

    • +1

1% is still a lot of phones sold.

no Pokemon Go, no deal for me

    • Haha yeah. I must admit this is the first time i am genuinely missing an app on windows =P

I heard Pokémon go is pay to win however, so honestly, I'm not going to play anyway =(

      • Its not pay to win at all. Read the reviews, you can pay to skip certain things, but everything that is there is available to everyone, and the rich may just finish things a little quicker but have less fun.

    • I was just about to write that. lol

  • +1

    Not worth more than $200

  • Don't buy from this seller, I have been struggling to get the resolution of a defect with new Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
This seller takes days in responding to messages, no phone number to contact.
If there will be any issue with the phone then they will ask to post to Hong Kong and even if there is defect they won't accept, and finally they will ask you pay 25AUD to post it back to you.
    Really pathetic.

Pretty sure eGlobal uses Atech distribution as their repairer in Australia. They can be slow via their RMA system (takes a day to reply) but there is nothing wrong with it, took me 7 weeks to get a new phone sent out after they checked out my faulty phone by Atech, but at least they upheld the warranty. They send out replacement phones via DHL. Took 4 weeks for Atech to say my phone couldn't be repaired (atech has bad reviews).

But hey you get what you pay for, if you want cheap and grey imports then you really cannot do better than eGlobal for their service (I find kogan service to be worse).

    • +1

Think twice about buying from them.

I am still going with my RMA. Been 8 weeks now. Haven't had a response from them in 10 days.

They are quick with the sale but if something goes wrong then you will have a mixed bag of an experience with RMA. Some people say they are great. Many say they are crap.

My experience is the latter. They aren't particularly following their own terms and conditions. Seems that they make it up as they go.

I'm still hoping for a resolution but can't see it happening in the short term.

It's an OK phone, good price. This is the bargain price it should have been. I would recommend picking the phone up now if you're hype about the Anniversary update coming Aug. 2 which basically redesigns more than half the ui + more features and adds more continuum features (Mainly beaming onto another computer).

OS is great, but apps store is getting there. Main publishers are there like square enix, ubisoft, gameloft, ea games etc.
Most of the essential apps have converted to UWP platform, facebook messenger, facebook, twitter, Instagram to name a few and more will come in due time.

    • continuum is awesome! people are stunned when i use it on my 950XL

      • I have still yet to demonstrate it to people. I never have a vacant monitor, they're all hooked up to my home's laptops/desktops. I'm really hype for beaming though, like transforming my 2009 laggy laptop into something useable and trustable (My phone).

      • Continuum is all smoke and mirrors. Give them a good 10 minutes to use it and the seams will show. Hardly any apps support it, and even the ones which do, are buggy with dodgy framerate and miss many features of desktop versions.

          Stand0410:

Bro, chill. It's been out for about a year. It's not a "project" that they are trying out, it's the future of Windows 10.

    • Do you need to use Windows10 with it? (Windows 7 forever! ☺)

  • Oh crap, bought it, trying to return the Lumia 650 I got in a bundle with a bose speaker for 440 or something…

Should have waited :( Microsoft is saying I need to return the entire bundle. Darn it!

  • +6

If this phone ran Android instead of Windows mobile, it could easily sell for $500+

    • And would probably run much slower compared to WM10

      • I have a much lower specced phone for personal use (LG G2) and I don't think it's that much slower than my Lumia (work phone).

The only reason I use the Lumia is because I don't have a dual sim device, but otherwise I have long since 'abandoned' WP as long-term viable platform.

      • +6

I used to be all aboard the 'WP performs better than Android' train but it's just not true anymore. An android phone with these specs will fly, while WP still throws up resuming screens and aggressively tombstones apps regardless of memory.

      • Even if this was true, it's still a worthwhile sacrifice, the quality you get in apps woudl outweigh any benefits in apparent performance. Like a browser that's actually good, and works..

      • Fair enough guys. I have Lenovo K3 Note which is quite a well regarded phone with 2 GB RAM and it does perform sluggishly at times. I'm not a heavy apps user. On the other hand, my cheapo WM 532 works perfectly fine more often than not with a fraction of memory. It is running beta WM10. Just my experience. Appreciate your inputs :-)

  • If this is grey imported one, then is it s dual-sim card version?

  • +1

Would be tempting, only if it had Android

  • +2

    Flagship of the sinking fleet.

    • Don't know about that. Windows 10 is going to give the app situation a big boost, I think. I use WP, and can already tell a difference. Facebook has also ported across their iOS apps for Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, meaning we are now at 1:1 with iPhone users (something which was unheard of a year ago).

There probably hasn't been a stronger time for the ecosystem, actually, since a few years ago. Now they just need to keep releasing hardware, and hopefully have some other OEMs come in…

  • +1

Lol, I used to crave a nokia lumia, the reviews looked good, phone looks good, i bought one for $500, and went into the app store, 3 months later the phone was smashed into pieces. Once you go into the windows app store moving from iOS or android that's when you'll feel grateful.

    • -1

True, Windows phones shouldn't be purchased for over $100 as far as I'm concerned.

      • +4

The opposite is the case. Pound for Pound Windows Phones are more stable than Android! Android is far from stable.

For one, I have never had any malfunctions with my Windows Phone. Whereas all my previous Androids didn't register expanded memory properly and ALWAYS struggled with memory.

With just 1gb of Ram, A Windows Phone is still not slow. God forbid I had 1 gb of ram with an Android.

If you are spending less than $200 on an Android, you are wasting your money. In the Mid-range…Windows is FAR FAR better than Android. It is ONLY in the high range than Android is better, i.e. your Samsung Galaxies and what not.

The reason I use Windows Phone today, is because of how much Android kept malfunction when I used it.

        • +2

There are many decent android phones which are more or less than $200. Galaxy J5, Moto G and some last generation flagships such as Xperia Z1 and HTC M8. Only market that Windows can do better is the low end market and they usually don't make much money of selling phones.

      • A $100 WP will outperform a $200 droid. My $39 Lumia 532 is much more stable than Lenovo K3 Note.

  • +2

Good, sturdy phones. Shame about the apps though.

  • +1

Great price on a good phone if you are Windows inclined.
I was DYING to get one but had to go back to an iPhone (from a 930) for my small biz at EOFY.
Reckon in about 2 - 3 years I can go back to Windows Mobile when they truly get a seamless experience across devices.

  • +2

If it was still $1K price I wouldn't get it but below $400 is a steal. It's a good phone with good camera. No Google Maps? No problems cos Lumia has its own Maps which is just as good. Cortana IMO is the best assistant compare to Android. Lacking of main stream apps is a let down but I'm sure some people don't mind if they don't use it.
Oh and Windows OS? It's smoother than Android OS for sure with less RAM and processors.

    • I think you will find that Google maps is better in terms of displaying real time traffic info and details about businesses. I like Windows phone but when I was using Here maps and switched to Android I found google maps better.

      • yes it might be is, not that anything wrong with Maps on windows 10.
I'm saying there's pro and cons and its up to the end users what they will use their phone for and how much they willing to pay. I've used them all before and definitely enjoyed my time with windows phones ( I had 820, 1020, 640XL)

      • Here maps work offline straight OOB. I know people will say Google maps works offline too but I nothing like Here.

    • Can I ask a question about the Lumia maps? If one types in a phrase like "Westfield Garden City" or "Dan Murphy's near me" will it find them?

      • +1

Well it's just the Windows 10 Maps apps now, so you can try it out on your Windows 10 device. The Maps app should be preinstalled.

And yes, absolutely those work. Typing the DM one correctly brought up the one in the suburb next to me (the closest one).

      • +1

yes it can, as @Stubo pointed out.

  • +1

enjoying my $100 Lumia 640 (Optus locked but unlockable) another benefit of these entry level phones are removable battery add microSD card - nice sized bright screen easy to use main apps fast no crashes

all those sub-$50 Windows Phones were not enough to entice me to buy one so this model has a long way to go. It's not about the hardware these days: it's about mass surveillance and profile-building.

As it is for Google, Apple and Blackberry and countless spyware apps and games from third parties. And State Intelligence.

    • if you can't afford a $50 windows phone, you can't afford this one for sure!

      • +1

not a question of affordability; more of a question of need. They are too late & they need…
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhh_GeBPOhs

Right now if I buy a Windows Phone I get precious little compared to other NSA-infested spyware phones. It seems their massively shrinking market share agrees with me.

    • One reason I like my cheapo windows phone is that I don't need to go online for maps. It does run tracking using the inbuilt maps.

      AFL app works also.

Perfect for telstra prepaid with $0/low credit.

    • Firefox OS/phone may be the future if you don't like spyware.

      • Their OS is going nowhere and rightfully so. Mozilla also spies with the best of them. They all do.

  • +2

Amazing phone, love using it! Moved from my iphone 5s to Lumia 950. never going back.

  • +1

I tried moving to android but couldn't replicate the one simple function I have and need on WP; pinning sub folders from multiple email accounts to the home screen and show me both message count and latest content on that live tile, sorry, static icon or widget.

I've stuck with my 930 as it does this basic thing right out of the box and I don't have to think about rooting, launchers and other Android BS (which I tried hard to make work).

Apps? Yeah, I have to take a small hit there but honestly, efficient access to email is the most critical thing I need.

Also, I don't like Google knowing everything about me to improve their advertising platform.

Anyway, I have to deal with all these platforms on a daily basis, I'm not going to get emotionally invested in any of them. These companies don't care about us, just our wallets.

    • Hmmm interesting.

I'm curious about what you mean by sub-folders? Are you talking about MS Outlook integration?

One of the things that annoyed me about Win Phone 8.1 was the poor gmail integration in that it didn't support the gmail category tabs which were introduced about three years ago. These allow me to automatically filter all incoming emails into two categories - primary and promotions.

I would have really liked to set up a tile in Win phone which just showed emails going into the primary category but it didn't support it. I also didn't want to share my gmail password with a third party which I had to do if I wanted to use a third party email app.

    • So you are still using 8.1? Because on 10 the live tiles are buggy with the outlook app and don't show live mail updates with multiple emails now either. Constant complaints from users requesting for Microsoft to fix it for a long time now. Another funny annoying thing in 10, when you have multiple email accounts pinned to the home screen like you described. It often won't take you to the correct inbox you tapped on.

Yeah I agree with your last point. Hopefully Microsoft listen to it users and fix up features like this that they value. Personally I have no issues with using widgets, which are much more functional than tapping a live tile.

Live tiles aren't reliable, especially when relying on messages. It was smart for Microsoft to copy Android in 10 in this regard.

      • I haven't had any problems with the Microsoft email apps. Actually for me they work PERFECTLY! I even get email updates on the phone, faster than I get emails on my desktop outlook app.

I am using three emails on live tile and all work perfectly including gmail. I would say this is the best email app integration I have ever used on a phone…definitely much better than widgets for me.

everything is on complete integration. I change anything on ANY of my Windows computers and it syncs perfectly with the phone and vice versa.

      • Yeah, I'm on the fast ring for Win 10 and basically I have an email account for work and one for personal. I pin both the inboxes as well as some other critical subfolders (clients, alerts etc) so I can keep a close eye on any msgs coming to those folders straight from my Start screen without even needing to launch the email app. This works perfectly for me and I've not had any issues with the live tiles.

On android I can pin the shortcut to the email app but no msg counts and I can't pin subfolders - that's reduced functionality that doesn't work for me.

I can't speak for gmail, I don't use it and don't like google treating my email like a commodity to improve its ad revenue so I'd be unlikely to switch to it.

I would consider android full time if I could get this functionality but ios and android homescreens fall far short, in my opinion, of the windows phone start screen. I'll keep looking at it though but I'd prefer to see the UWP platform get some more traction.

  • Thinking too much about this because my 930 still going strong , I had all apps i need on WP10, and multiple email account can be view under sub folders , recently I bought a Chinese phone secondhand in mint cond Huawei Ascend mate 7 that have facebook messenger I can use to call friends oversea but after 2 weeks used I put the sim back to my old 930 becase it is a lot easier to use , WP10 has alot of update on the 930 recently ,and the camera is better on 930 than the Huawei and I use camera a lot, only complain is the phone does not ring and vibrate at the same time .

  • +1

This phone probably has the best camera on any phone at this price.

  • Anyone find the XL version for less than ~$590?

  • The 950 and 950XL are incredible devices, My family of 4 all use them and we're on the Insider preview builds which provide new tweaks and features every week or two.

I really can't fault them and they have all the apps we want or need.

The OS is very slick and snappy.

  • +3

Happy Lumia 640 owner (snatched for $99 at Target).

Wife's another happy Lumia 1020 owner (amazing photos!).

    If I required a new phone, I'd seriously consider this 950 :)

  • Great phone, however I'd say, pay a little extra and get the Dual sim Xl for 550$.

  • So where do you get the XL for %550?

  • Bargain, these are still well expensive in the UK (here at the moment)

The 950 is 550 AUD roughly

The 950 XL is $687 AUD

Bearing in mind, that this is now cheaper than it would have been a few weeks ago due to Brexit.

    • Isn't UK infamous for having ridiculously high price for electronics though? One of the things I've heard was, before Brexit, that you can pretty much guess the US pricing from UK pricing by just replacing pound sign to dollar sign. Of course with Brexit, things would probably change/probably have been changed.

      • Somewhat yes. But when I first came to Australia, some of the pricing was shocking. US pricing vs UK, you're correct but the price in the UK displayed everywhere is inclusive of VAT where as the US it doesn't include sales tax :)

        Anyhow, well expensive over here.
