remember when Minisoft asked 1k for these

  • UNBEATABLE!

    • +8

Except by many other deals on better phones!!!

      • such as?

        • Literally any android phone in terms of functionality. But in terms of display AMOLED is like :O, once you go AMOLED you know what true black looks like.

        • +4

@Pikaloo: To be honest most Medium Android phones, I've found some major laggage. I ended up just going for a s7 edge and I was surprised how 'at times' I experienced stuttering. I just couldn't hack the Windows Phone app gap though.

        • +2

Nexus 5x is going for less, is far better long term.

        • +4

          @Pikaloo:
          I disagree fully about functionality.

I am now an Android user, and will probably stay using Samsung phones (yay for VR) and by proxy Android, but functionality wise WP10 was mostly fantastic and a good user experience.

Cortana worked so much better for me than OK Google. The WP10 UI was lightyears ahead of the stock Android launcher and most third party launchers IMHO (though using Total Launcher with a lot of widgets fixes this). The UI felt smoother, displayed more info at a glance and I had less 'I want to throw my phone at the wall' moments with WP10. Also, Samsung/ Android not having one handed mode on S6 Edge (and S6) is ridiculous and makes the phone unwieldy. I preferred the messaging app on WP10. I preferred the built in swipe functionality in the WP10 keyboard to any keyboard I have tried on Android (including Swype which is my default keyboard now), and the predictions always seemed more intelligent etc. etc.

Yes, there are fewer apps on WP10 (especially official ones), though unless you are of the tinder-vine-snapchat generation or game a lot on the phone, then it is really blown out of proportion as an argument against WP10. 90% of the apps that I use now (except for VR and as of this morning Pokemon Go) I had on WP10 or had an equal or better (in my opinion) app for on WP10, or had a web version which is about as good as the Android version.

There are definitely positives about Android and about the S6 Edge, but I found the WP10 functionality was better than Android (though this could be nostalgia contributed to by a few major annoyances with the S6 Edge).

I know that Android fanbois will post rebuttals, but this is my genuine user experience. For the record, I'm not a Microsoft fanboi (my main laptop is a Mac, and as mentioned my phone is a Samsung S6 Edge. Also, I have gripes about my Surface Pro 2 battery life and some W10 choices, and think MS made some really stupid decisions in the mobile arena that lost WP users such as myself). However, if for some reason I needed to buy a phone and couldn't get another Samsung for free on a plan, I'd totally consider buying the 950 for that price, and would consider it a bargain.

          Rant over.

        • @Pikaloo:
Meh, true blacks but white is way off, can't stand it. Day to day use white is displayed way more than black.

        • @Pikaloo: In terms of OS smoothness, snappiness, etc. the WP are way ahead.

I sold it (Lumia 1520) due to the lack of apps, though, which was a shame.

        • @tolchok: That was a very good rant. I agree entirely - I've used a fully specc'd Macbook Pro as my main computer for years, but having tried all the phone platforms at length, I still can't go past the 950 and the final Nokias that run on Windows Phone. Aside from the 950, I also kept a 1020 and a fab modded 808 (both are Nokias actually, not the Micro$oft versions). I run the 1020 on the Windows Insider pgm, fully updated to the latest WP10 release, which it wasn't built for, but it's incredible on WP10. YMMV I guess.

  • +1

    awesome!

    • +8

Latest firmware released yesterday added double-tap to wake.

One of those ridiculously minor things that are hard to let go once you get used to it.

      • -7

Double tap and all the windows fanbois loose their minds.

        • +7

Since I had information people might be interested in, I thought I would post it.

          What was your reasoning?

        • @KentT: android had this feature and no one batted an eye lid….

        • @Hotkolbas:

The Nokia N9 from 2011 was the first to introduced this feature on a phone. Obviously some companies took note and decided to copy it. Then in 2013 LG claimed they invented double tap to wake. lol It's a nice feature to have, no idea why Microsoft chose to remove the feature from their newest flagships. Been a feature on Lumia phones for years, even on budget ones like the 532.

        • @Ronnnie:

2 fav phones from nokia were the n900 and n9that i owned

  • +1

Wow.. I love my Nexus 6P but this is tempting

    • +9

      Said no one ever…

      • +14

Said jbnz.. like literally 2 hours ago…

        • -3

What jbnz said is the sound of a tree falling in a forest and no one hears it.

        • @Hotkolbas: but you saw it!

        • @mcp2kpro: i see it but i dont believe it

        • @Hotkolbas: You can't even trust your own eyes. You probably having a hard time accepting life also.

        • @mcp2kpro: should i lay on a couch and tell you all of lifes problems now?

Sorry bit i accept where i am and who i am, the cards i have been delt i play as best i can and im happy.

      Worse OS
      Smaller display
      Less powerful CPU
      Slower RAM
      Uglier, worse build

      The temptation is real.

      • +4

Slower ram and less powerful CPU but still snappier than most droid phones I've used. Don't mistake lack of apps for worse OS and smaller display suits A LOT more people…..

        • +4

The only issues I have with windows phones. App quality and app performance. The edge browser, which performance is worse, has trouble displaying certain pages, usually hangs on hamburger menus and no way to block ads or text reflow option. And battery life On 10. I had a mate that got this phone when they first came out and the battery drain was much worse than my G4. However since then there's been plenty of updates, so battery life might have been improved. I know with my 930, it drains a lot faster on 10 than 8.1. Even if not being used it'll still lose around 2% per an hour.

        • +1

@Ronnnie: Mostly agree, I traded in my WP to go back to droid because of the apps. And for browser I used Opera on my WP cause edge did suck. But my battery was as good if not better than my Nexus.

        • Oh I was never mistaken. While the lack of apps really kills any value for Windows Mobile, it's just a pretty garbage OS in itself. Mostly in terms of optimization, battery life, real world performance (they are snappy when they work, I'll give you that).

        • +1

          @deanylev:

8.1 is snappy compared to Android, 10 isn't. Especially on the lower end/midrange Lumias using s400 SoC. 10 is ok on s8xx phones, but still nowhere near what 8.1 was.

        • +1

@Ronnnie: Oh for real? Never tried 10, but have played with 8.1 a few times, seemed nice. I've heard awful things about 10, especially from Michael Fisher's review of the 950/950XL on Pocketnow.

        • +2

          @deanylev:

Tbf that was around 8 months ago now and Microsoft have been working hard constantly improving 10. 10 then vs now is like night and day. Microsoft deserved all the criticism at the time, but also deserve praise for the support they have been giving 10. 10 is shaping up quite nicely, however I doubt its ever going to be smooth as 8.1. I have a 532 with 8.1 and it still amazes me how smooth it is.

        • @Ronnnie: Couldn't agree more, my 950XL is now ridiculously reliable and snappy as heck. Love being on the Insider builds.

    • +7

I should rephrase.. I love Android but I'm tempted to try out Windows 10M..

      Bias much..

  • +1

Android Enjoyed has these for $343 but if you use the code BEFOREYOUGO you get $10 off. Shipping is $24 to Melbourne. So with all that, it still only comes to $357. So about $31 cheaper. https://www.android-enjoyed.com/microsoft-lumia-950-32gb-4g-…

    • +22

      Yeah but… Android Enjoyed

      • +6

This is true. Not everyone has had a bad experience but you get the thrill of not knowing if you are going to have a good or bad experience! :-/

      • Bought a 5x from these guys and I got nothing but praise.

        • +33

          What about your order?

        • @Jackal:

          Hahahaha

        • @Jackal: Lol walked right into that one haha! Well played!

    • +8

I've deliberately (well not now) ignored the irony of buying a Microsoft phone from Android Enjoyed…

  • +2

would have been more nicer if it was dual sim model :(

  • Tempting. Very good deal. If only I didn't buy the 930 for $200. :(

    • where did you get the 930 for $200? Thanks

      • yep, as webtherapist said, harvey norman green.

    • Unless you're after type c, or continuum, the 930 will basically be just as good! $200 is very cheap for a great phone.

    • I'd love to know where the $200 came from as well please

      • HarveyNorman deal not long ago but Green colour only for $198 I thibk

  • +1

I've been checking out the OP3 and ZF3 but this phone on paper looks alright and the price is alright. Is this a good phone that comes with a dodgy app market? Main apps are Netflix, Twitter, Spotify, Youtube, NBA, Xiaomi cam and band. The lack of apps could definitely be a deal killer.

    • +1

Probably should search the store for the apps you want and read some of the reviews to see if they have what you need.

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/store/apps/windows-phone

Youtube only has third party apps, though some argue they are better than Googles offerings. And any Xiaomi app will definitely be third party, and likely paid.

I think Netflix and Twitter are UWP, so of you have Win10 desktop you can pretty shrink the window to get a sense of what the mobile experience will be like.

      • +1

Youtube third party apps do not support RED subscription features, nor will they.

        • Will they, don't know. They don't support Youtube RED Originals now though..

        • @TheContact: Red features, such as offline viewing, no adds etc etc.

        • @OnlinePred: I didn't think that needed to said, I'm unaware of any 3rd party apps that don't offer offline viewing and no ads. Thought it was implied.

        • -1

@TheContact: Yes but technically those apps blocking youtube ads are against YouTube usage agreements, so if google chase them down they can block their access to youtube. These aren't actually using RED subscription, just hacks.
It's like saying why pay for Netflix when there is torrents. I pay for premium services I think is worthwhile, and it is not officially supported in any form on Windows Phone. End of story. There are apps that download videos from youtube, and some that block ads yes.

        • +1

@OnlinePred: The Windows Mobile youtube apps support saving videos to watch later, and there's no ads.

        • -1

@Chipwich: windows mobile doesn't exist anymore. And by YouTube apps you mean this party apps which is what I said. No official support from Google for red subscription.

        • @OnlinePred: Screw paying for youtube, ermm, could think of a million things I'd rather spend my money on.

        • @simmomelb: Well I went the other way, pay for google music, get access to Youtube Red.

    • +2

Please save yourself and just get an android or iPhone. We use windows phones at work, had 930 and now 950 and 950xl. The integration into Windows is great, but this is coming to android anyway. Microsoft knows they lost mobile, they don't care about it anymore so don't expect anything great to come out of it. App market will still be abysmal and you will forever be left with mediocre apps or a lack of core app. No YouTube is a killer for me along with google maps…
The phones themselves are fine, fantastic hardware, great camera, but its the software that lets them down. Not even just app gap but the actual OS is so far behind android and ios…. If only they ran android….
That feeling when someone from work comes in and says "hey check out this game in Facebook Messenger", and you go to play it and realise it's not out on Windows phone…. This goes for nearly everything. You would be kinda silly to buy a windows phone now, considering even MS has vocalised it's disinterest and lack of vision for WP, they are focusing on services, like cortana on android/ios, Office, AIBots etc etc. They are hoping to provide apps on Android and IOS, therefore eliminating the need for WP.

      • +2

How about some potitive quotes on the excellent design of these phones?

        • It looks fantastic! I do love how it looks, although honestly it is getting a little old the flat slate look.

      • +1

Considering this is a 'work' phone in your situation, I'm not sure why would you care about apps when the does everything your workplace wants you to do.

        • +1

Because I then have to take it home too… And they are only phones for some users, of which we have to repeatedly tell them why they can't get apps their family use.

        • @OnlinePred: I get that mate. I think as a phone these are really well made. Lack of apps is unfortunate though it depends on what apps you want.

        • @ozmu: Just wish they would have used the amazing hardware/build quality to a better OS. These Nokias are built to last.

        • +1

@OnlinePred: work phones arent intended to be used by your family though

          thats kinda the point

i keep 3 phones for this reason

          one phone is completely person

one throwaway and a work fone that never sees any personal stuff on it. I even keep separate outlook and gmail accounts

      • +6

I can't agree with this - the Windows Phone OS blows Android out of the water. My experience with Android phones, is they are more prone to crashing and less secure. The Windows OS design is smoother, more secure, more original and just downright nice. Live tiles are brilliant.

App gap is a problem - but not as bad as people make out. Check what apps you need, and if everything is there - then there is no problem. If a critical app you want isn't on windows phone - don't get it. But with Universal apps most common stuff is there. Things like Facebook, FB messenger, twitter, instagram, netflix etc - all there. There's lots of good 3rd party Youtube apps (or just use the browser). You want Snapchat or an extra billion fart apps? - get android.

Honestly the only apps I really miss on my Lumia 930 is Logitech Harmony remote app and Pebble support. But other people would have other apps they need.

      • +1

Agree with @oak. If all you're after is a phone and camera, and don't care much about apps, I don't see how you can beat this…. WP is a MUCH better OS than Android IMHO.

  • How are you getting $388? The shipping cost is minimum $25. Can't seem to work it out

    • There is an automatic 5% discount at checkout.

  • -3

I would never spend over $300 on any Microsoft smart phones…

    • +13

Write up a list of things you would never do and put it in an email and send it to us so we can delete it.

      • Too many to list, this is one of those.

    • +1

And nobody is forcing you to

      • I am just saying something about the product, you seem too nervous.

  • Does anyone know if you would get a tax invoice with the GST component listed(for TRS refund)?

    • no TRS! eGlobal sell 'grey-imports' buddy:

      https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/about-our-company.h…

      Tax Invoice and Currency
As our products are grey-imported goods, we are unable to provide any tax invoice for tax claim. All pricing on the websites are in Australian dollars.

      cheers

      • thanks for the info genes888 :)

        • all good mate!

woulda got one myself to play with if I could get TRS.

am heading O/S myself next week! haha

TRS avaialble for this deal tho:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256463

altho it's ~$200 more for local stock

          cheers

      • Which is kind of dodgy seeing as they have an ACN and a .au website.

        • Why dodgy? Same business model as Kogan

        • @Fybre: Maybe not dodgy-illegal, why do these companies get to pretend they're Australian businesses when they aren't, and don't pay tax.

        • +1

          @macrocephalic:

What about companies that have no business connection with Australia at all, but own a trademark and therefore can get a com.au domain.

The problem is the .au domains are managed by a non-government body that doesn't care about consumers.

Actually Kogan and some other businesses that ship from outside of Australia would pay company tax on any profits they make. They are still subject to the Australian Consumer Law (enforcement is much more difficult though if they don't have assets in Australia).

  • +2

There is an IT expert that is popular in the media in Adelaide and some cities interstate too.
Bags the hell out of windows phones and says 1% of the popular have them.
Yet there are lots of deals that are very popular on ozbargain that regularly come up and seem to have a bit of a following.
Is what he says true, only 1% of the population have windows phones, or does he not know what he's talking about?

FYI I'm talking about Richard Pascoe Adelaide Tech Guy.

    • I heard its 5% market share in Australia (Some MS rep told me back in Sept 2015 - Info. could be outdated).

      • +3

Windows mobile phones are for those who really don't give a crap what others think.

Most android phones are filled with bloatware and I hate everything Apple related.

    • +3

Surely, less than 1% know him so it does not matter what anyone says. They are good phones.

    • +7

On OzBargain, only 1.2% of all mobile sessions report them as Lumia. There might be other Windows Phone but they are still in minority.

    • He is either spot on or very close. They are only popular in third world countries, although not the expensive models.
