  • Looks like the ALDI Cocoon Create which is a rebadged Wanhao. Good price if it's the same.

    • Just downloaded the Balco manual, the support number is same as Cocoon one I have.
Good support from these guys, they seem to have engineers who knows what they're talking about.

      • Probably is the same distributor (WinPlus). They had/have and exclusivity deal with ALDI for the Cocoon Create printer, so they've probably just changed the branding on this one so Kogan/Dick Smith can sell them

    • Yeah, there's a couple out there that are all the same printer with a different brand name. They all stem from the Wanhao Duplicator i3 (v2 by the looks of it, instead of the new v2.1).

  • Any reviews on this unit?

  • Is there much difference between one of these and the $300 ebay jobbies other than the metal case?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2016-Upgraded-Full-Quality-High-P…

    • +1

Not really. They're all variations of the prusa i3. The ebay one doesn't come assembled though, where as this one looks to be partially assembled. There may also be a lengthy setup and calibration process required depending on how close the configs that ship with the units are. These machines are pretty well documented, but at a glance neither are what you would call plug and play. Fun hobby though, if you are technically inclined.

      • Thanks for the tips, I'm quite happy to spend a while putting it together myself, sounds like I may as well save the $200 and get an ebay one.

  • Is there anywhere in Aus where you can buy the newer V2.1 version?

    • How does the v2.1 version differ from this one? Why is it better?

      • From the video review linked above the issue of x-axis belt friction has been resolved, and thumbscrews replacing wingnuts for leveling.

Here is a list from their website: http://wanhaousa.com/products/duplicator-i3-steel-frame

        Date: 4/25/2016
Z-Axis endstop switch bracket added to allow better contact
Thumb screws added to the build platform allowing easier build plate leveling
Lock nuts added to build platform to retain perfect build plate leveling
The corners of the build platform have been rounded off to increase safety
The housing for the bearings that support the extruder assembly have been updated for better linear trace and to avoid X-Axis belt friction.

      • Main difference is the belt friction on the bearings but the latest version also has a nice integrated touch screen and regular SD card slot under the printing plate. Here's a link to an upgrade kit to fix the belt friction issue: https://ultimate3dprintingstore.com/collections/wanhao-genui…

    • Apparently Cocoon Create sell a kit to upgrade to the V2.1, or you can print new thumbscrews yourself. There are videos about how to fix the issue

  • Had a look on the YouTubes and found a vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chFmgF8pbgM Have a look around 1:50, looks like the new v2.1 bearings but can't find a good front view.

  • Their website is pretty much identical to Cocoon Create's site except they don't sell the upgrade kit, hope that means it's already up to v2.1.

Just got a response from Kogan customer support:

      Thanks for contacting Kogan.com.

I can confirm that the Balco 3D Printer available on our website is based on the Wanhao i3 v2.1, including all latest revisions.

  • It's now $599 and not out till 2nd of Aug

Ah maybe a deal breaker :/ was gonna jump on this but not sure the $100 bump up is worth it… Can probably get else wear for less. Seems to be a few other clones here and there around then net

Anyone know if the filament that comes with it is big spools? or are they just going to be sample lengths

    • Same thing here, the deal had 18 hours left, decided to get one when i got home from work and by then the price was bumped up. Looking at the forum it sounds like some people are getting the refurbs from aldi cocoon create models v2, so I sent an email to see if they (winplus) have any, but am also looking at getting one from these guys as an alternative - https://beautiful3dprinters.com/collections/wanhao/products/…
$399US with free shipping, they have a 4% off for sign up so ~$507AU. It sounds like they have faster shipping also, but i'll wait to see if I hear any more before deciding tomorrow.
Disappointed that Kogan /DSE pulled the deal early / upped the price.

    • Noticed that it says 10m - from some of the other pictures ive seen i think thats just a few coils, i.e. 4 sample colours.

  • Mmmm thanks for the heads up JD, 10m isnt all that much worth it either.. doesnt sweeten the deal.

I think the deal on the wanhao youve found is the best one!
Thats what these printers are clones of, well a clone of clone of im pretty sure.

Did you end up getting the DSE/ Kogan printer?

    • I ended up getting the Wanhao from beautiful3dprinters, I got another two 1kg rolls of filament, a glass bed/silicon/clips all up for $450.24 US.
Every time I used the online chat function on their site they replied quickly and so I think they will be good help if I have any issues with it; meanwhile I contacted DSE but never even got a response. The winplus support for aldi were fine also but said they didn't have any refurbished units at the moment.

Hopefully it arrives soon, from the site it suggests 8 days (4 P&H and 4 shipping) so I'm optimistic that ill be printing before the DSE/Kogan ones leave the warehouse.

      • Where did you get your glass bed and stuff from if it was local?

        • No not local, it was an add on at checkout when I got the printer; beautiful3dprinters.

  • Sounds awesome, let me know how it goes! Pretty keen to jump on one of these in the next few days. Will probably follow suit

Next just got to get a good price on a laser cutter :D , perhaps we can convince one of the ebay sellers to do a group discount for us Ozbargainers

    • Got my package from beautiful3dprinters on Wednesday. It works great, very happy. I have had no luck with the glass bed but my prints are turning out fine without it. Ive made the tool holder, the filament guide, the ok hand and its now printing the z axis alignment rods. It was updated to the latest version also so that's better support than expected.

lol, I looked at the laser cutters also but decided i still liked being able to see a bit too much to try a Chinese laser cutter ATM. but i am tempted.

      • Sounds awesome! Will be buying mine shortly :) Did the glass bed arrive broken? or you just cant seem to get it to work?

Haha yeah you hear some stories with those china laser cutters but theres ALLOT of documentation on getting them working flawlessly on redit and around the internet. Have a look on the subredit on laser cutters or google K40

No everything in the box was great, I think there was a thumbscrew loose and the xaxis limit didn't seem to work on the first print but i just opened up the tiny switch and reseated the little button; both were easy and obvious fixes. The glass bed was not broken but as I put the thing to work quite quickly I printed the first few on the mat only and they were perfect. When I went to adjust the zlimit for the glass bed, then realign the bed it was a bit of work and I couldn't find a place for the front two clips where the fan wouldn't hit them or the hot end wouldn't home ontop of them and knock them off. When I did try run a print on it a few layers after the raft the print slipped. I didn't bother with it more after that and just went back to the mat. The mat seems to give really good easy repeatable results and the prints come off fine. The mat that was already stuck on mine (you get two) had a slight bubble in one quadrant I noticed, it only affected the raft and is not a worry unless im using the full bed area which will be rare.
Maybe if I try the glass bed again if I need it for ABS or something Ill make some of the 3d printed corner braces and try that.

  • I jumped on this at $399 on 8th July, it said leaves warehouse 29th July, but today I got an email saying it's been dispatched and due for delivery today! And now it just arrived, a week early yay but I'm going on leave for a week so won't be able to set it up to play with until I get back. But it's exciting

  • Just got the printer in the mail, 2nd power up and the power switch breaks… :(
At least it's not turning 'off' and not the other way round.
    Sighhh…..
