EDIT: looks like expansion portable 4TB just dropped in price as well, not sure how it differs from the backup plus from yesterday, but once again an awesome price for those that missed out.

Another hard drive deal from amazon, this time round the expansion 5TB desktop version, but still a good price. Prime is not required.

Seagate Expansion Portable 4TB US $99

  • nice one

  • Looks like the 5TB has gone back to US$136 already?

    • still showing aa $109+delivery for me?

      • Yep my bad, it's back down again now

  • Works for ps4 upgrade?

    • +2

not cleanly, these 4TB drives are too thick,
I got yesterday's deal anyway, I will have to cut the metal casing to make it fit

      • Yeah looks like it has to be below 9.5mm, is there a video showing how to cut it

        • I have found 2 videos of installing these thick 15mm disks, but neither showed actually cutting the metal,
          sorry

        • @georgesc:

Ok you will be the first then

      • i got one on yesterdays deal aswell are they better than this hard drive ?

        • The internal HDD itself is identical, but packaging and hdd enclosure is different. Also yesterday's deal comes with 200gb one drive storage (if you care).

        • @EatmahPoo:
isnt the 200GB one drive only valid like for 3 years or so?

        • +1

          2 years only.

  • +2

Nice. Even cheaper than yesterday's deal. Wonder how is the difference between both drives.

  • got one just before it disappeared. Thanks op!

  • Anyone know what HDD is in the 4TB?
Im looking to remove it and im after the same disk thats in the plus from yesterday…

    • +1

It's got the same internal drive, ST4000LM016.

  • The only difference is the "Backup-Plus" includes backup software and the OneDrive account, it's physically identical internally.

  • Aww man, I got excited thinking the 5TB was an internal drive.

  • +4

man so tempting, but reading the review from newegg, some of the hard drives died within 3 months :/ and its only 1 year warranty.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178…

Isnt the other deal have 2 year warranty instead?

    • +3

31 of 72 votes are 1 out of 5 stars, that's a lot of hate for that product.

Seagate don't tend to honour international warranty (at least according to Quora), so, consider the cost of returning the drive to the US if it fails!!

If anyone has experience on this issue of Seagate and International warranty, please share.

      • +2

Never tried to get my money back but I have had two Seagate drives and both failed within 3-6 months (see my comment below). Wouldn't use a Seagate drive if you gave it to me for free.

        • +1

Agreed. There is a reason why they are getting rid of stock at this low price when compared to the competition.

    • Alright peeps, just an update regarding the warranty.

I chat with amazon rep to confirm about the warranty and has confirmation that this hdd got 2 year warranty with it.
I also checked with the rep to see if by being in Australia, the warranty will be different and the rep confirm it will stay the same 2 year warranty.

However if we need to claim the warranty, we have to deal with Seagate directly though, so yea.

I think I'm ok with the warranty so I think I will bite this deal.

As per another website (Expansion vs Backup Plus):
Form factor - Expansion drives are bulkier. Backup Plus drives are slimmer and more portable. Both come in both 3.5 and 2.5 inch models.
Software - The Backup plus line has its own Backup Software, providing automatic backups, scheduled backups etc. Whether this software is better than any of the many other similar utilities, I cannot say.
Warranty - The Backup Plus has a 3 year warranty, while the Expansion drives have a 2 year warranty. This may vary depending on where you buy it.
Price - The Backup plus is generally more expensive than an Expansion drive with the same capacity. This depends on the dealer, of course.
Marketing - The Backup plus is marketed as a safe place to store important files. The Expansion is marketed as an easy way to add storage for frequently used data to your machine.

  • Heat added!

    • Some interesting conclusions from Google data they released about their datacentres was that temperature made almost no difference to hard drive reliability.

The almost part: actually higher temperatures correlated with a slightly lower failure rate - ie. cooler drives had slightly higher failure rates. However the differences were so small as to be meaningless to consumers. However if you have thousands of hard drives then running them in slightly warmer surroundings means you can pay less staff to be on hand to swap drives in and out.

  • Buy it or not……….
    …….
    ………….

  • Nice price on the 5TB. Not usually a fan of Seagate but had to bite at that price.

  • Price went up :(

    • Price still the same for me?

    • Same here. $117.99

Prices ended up dropping back down. 5TB is now $109!

  • got one for $99usd! thanks OP!

missed out on yesterday's deal on the backup plus, though i'm glad I waited as this one's cheaper

    My (terrible) experience with Seagate…

I have owned two Seagate hard drives now and both have become virtually unusable within about 3-6 months. In both cases the connection between the hard drive itself and the USB cord has degraded and it becomes necessary to hold the cord at an odd angle in the port on the hard drive to establish a connection. I then have to place the hard drive down carefully on my desk and avoid moving it in any way whatsoever as this disrupts the connection.

I went and bought a more expensive Western Digital drive just yesterday and began copying the files over from my faulty Seagate. There was about 600GB worth so I left the dives plugged in and the transfer running overnight. I went to check progress this morning only to find the Seagate drive had lost connection halfway though the night - despite being left completely untouched on my desk.

While my experiences may not be representative, I thought it worthwhile sharing. I won't be buying Seagate again.

Edit: I take really good care of my electronics and only used the Seagate drives a few times a week.

    • As it sounds like it's the external USB port that's borked, ironically you may be lucky they're Seagates, they are pretty much the only company now that don't build the USB interface into the drive, so you're able to just change the case or connect it via normal SATA.

      • So can we get empty cases where we can just stick the HDD in them? (I didn't know that. :) )

        • +1

Yep, check PCCG, MSY, or UMART.

Youtube has plenty of vids on opening the original case.

      • What do you mean by the external USB port?

        • Either the connector, or the USB board (PCB) itself.

    • Just to counter your point, I've had 6 Seagate drives in my home file server computer (JBOD, no fancy RAID or anything), and they've all been fine for 4+ years.

      • Fair call - it may also be that their build quality has gone downhill over time. Good for people to get some alternate views anyway

  • +1

5tb price has gone down :)
    $109.99

    • Don't think so, the price in OP includes ~$13US (for me) delivery.

  • +2

Great price on the 4TB and I am tempted as I need a new 2.5" drive, but I have had bad experiences with all the Seagate drives I have owned in the past :(

    • Yeah it's a funny universal phenomenon. I've had no trouble with seagates over the last 25 years or so but have had quite a few WD's drop dead. It's either one or the other for some reason. :) (Speaking anecdotally of course.)

      • The reason is randomness. Not that I'm doing statistics here because I'm nowhere near that smart but if something's random then one person getting 2X and another getting 3Y if X and Y were hard drive brands - that's random.

And probably confirmation bias which no one can escape from.

  • How do you get the portable 4TB too $139? It is US$99.99 + US$9.99 shipping, that is

    Items: AUD 136.06
    Shipping & handling: AUD 9.63
    Total before tax: AUD 145.69
Estimated tax to be collected: AUD 0.00
    Order total: AUD 145.69

    • +2

~AU$139 is the rough conversion I got from google, you should be able to get somewhere close to that price if you pay for it in USD with a fee free card such as 28 degrees or bankwest zero.

      • No worries. I thought I might be missing something.

If I paid via USD, credit card company will charge me international transaction fee + cross-border processing fee + currency conversion fee ….

I am not sure what are the differents between those fees, but they are just add on top of each other.

        • I made a payment yesterday and paid via USD with Commonwealth master debit card, and it was cheaper than paying directly with AUD. Did not see any additional fee charged as you said. Will they do it at the end of the month?

        • That's why everyone should have a 28 Degrees mastercard :)

  • +1

I'm getting $7.08 on delivery not $6.08. I'm using 28degrees and US currency.

    • $6.08 is for when the parcel is delivered to Amazon pick-up location (not your residential address) and you go there to pick it up (if there is any close to your home)
You can edit this by changing shipping address.

  • how do these differ from yesterdays deal? was yesterdays better ?

  • +1

If you are thinking of getting a 5TB for a NAS or internal use read this:
    http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=34052.0

    TLDR - Don't.

    • I read the article, however it seems to be based on a different seagate variants. The one on this offer is STEB5000100 and the one on the article is STBV5000100 which is the older model. However thanks for bringing this up, seems seagate product is inconsistent in quality wise.

I'm not saying this disk will be perfect, however I believe they put some sort of "enhancement" with the newer version.
I hope this drive last longer (*touch wood) than what it said on the article.

5TB appear to be SMR drives

    4TB expired as I went to checkout : (

    Cheers for the post though.

  • 5TB price is now USD $109.99 + shipping. For some reason it doesn't show shipping charge on product page. Would have to add to cart and go to checkout to see what the final price is but I can't be bothered. I think it's less than at time of posting.

    • Price hasn't changed, it's been $109.99+shipping since posting.

  • Price for 4tb Expansion Portable drive is now $117.99 usd excluding shipping

  • ordered one yesterday , still no sign of debit on credit card ?

    • Is yours backordered? Amazon only charge your card when it's about to ship.

  • Ordered the 5TB on the 14th and delivered on the 18th. Unbelievably fast from the US

    • What shipping method did you use?

      • Standard international shipping. They however sent it via UPS at no charge.
