Xmas Ideas and Suggestions from Melbourne - 1 week to go somewhere

We're more than likely to have 2 weeks off from 23rd Dec onward and wanting to go somewhere for a week. Looking for some suggestions for places to go and ideas from fellow ozb community. We're family of 4 (2 adult and 2 kids under 4).

budget for travel (airfares only) for 4 people:
domestic - upto 1000 (or close to)
international - upto 2000 (or close to)

One week isn't a lot of time allowing for Christmas being busy and bookings tight.
Have a look @ Merimbula or Bega in NSW.

    • can do more….say 1.5 weeks if required. but will definitely look into Merimbula or Bega.
      thank you!

This is the most expensive time for flights.

But I had a quick look and you could fly from Avalon to Hobart for $140 return (carry-on only) from 31 December to 5 January.

It seems the only other places to fly within your budget are Sydney or Adelaide, but it's probably more economical to drive to those places and driving means you also have your car at the other end.

These links might also be useful for considering air fares:

    Domestic flights - http://adioso.com/au/mel-to-domestic-dec-25-return-about-1-w…
    International flights - http://adioso.com/au/mel-to-international-dec-25-return-abou…

If you do want to fly, it's usually cheapest to fly on Christmas day itself rather than the days before or after.

Are any of your children under 2? If so you can take them on the plane for $0 or a small fee if you're willing to let them sit on your lap…

    • understand the timing and i have flown on Christmas day on 3-4 occasions. airfares are comparatively cheaper if you fly on xmas day than say +-1 to 3 days. those adioso links are very useful - thank you!

  • One suggestion, if driving - the Rutherglen area (wineries, Brown Brothers etc), Beechworth, check out Milawa Cheese Factory, pass through Mansfield and Bright on the way. This has more info.

Another idea is to include a snow destination, say Mount Buller, or Falls Creek. Because it is hot in summer, it is nice and cool up there during summer. They are great for walks. In Mount Buller, for example, you can take the chair-lift that is open, up and down (day-pass, unlimited rides), something I quite enjoy.

Also, if you stay up there for the night, you can go out and watch the night sky, unpolluted by too many lights.
