Have you ever turned down a free sample?

Recently some shop for body building products was giving away free samples on the street outside.
Some guy tried to hand me a plastic glass filled with a couple of inches of some green liquid.
I smiled and said "No, thanks".
The look of malice he gave at my refusal was disturbing.

Have you ever turned down a free sample?

Did he also say "Your lack of faith in my Kool-Aid is disturbing" and force choke you while pouring the mysterious green liquid down your throat?

That is what the eyes said to me.
      No further words were required.

  • Probably should have put the subject as:
Would you turn down a free sample from a junkie parked outside your apartment?

I regularly turn down religious propaganda samples from neatly dressed people on a weekend morning.

    • A sample of salvation?

      Hmmm… That could be interesting.
      A pamphlet… ignore completely

      • The ones that knock on the door.. I made the mistake of accepting a book of Mormon once and they hounded me for about 3 months..

        • I did not have this experience. A couple of times, I invited them indoors for refreshments/snacks, and other times, I just offered refreshments. (These were really hot summer days, they had been up and down the street).

Although I am not aligned with this faith, these elders are generally good kids trying to do their duty/responsibilities. I got to chat with them - in general, they are from different parts of the world, they do not stay at one place for long (I think it is one year).

They were very nice chaps, even offered to help with work around house etc. Of course, I did not accept.

I also accepted their book, but they did not hound me after that. So far, only good experience with these kids.

PS. Not knowing much at the beginning, I asked them whether their faith condones polygamy, and other contentious issues :-)

I politely say no thank you when they first open their mouth. For some reason it's now socially acceptable for a **** for brains moron to just continue as though I didn't just cut him off politely even though the only thing they're interested in doing is extracting money from you.

I actually had this Dead Sea Spa (or whatever those criminals call themselves now) sales twit glare at me after I told him no thank you three times and then he actually mumbled something obviously insulting when my back was to him. I turned around and told him to (profanity) off and now he looks away every time I walk past.

Another time some ****head collecting for Save the Children actually started abusing me as I walked off basically yelling out things to make it appear as though I was heartless. I complained to Save the Children, no idea if anything happened.

Yes! I had the Jericho Dead Sea Sales person hassle me when I walked past them in Westfield one day. She was really pushy, and when I politely told her that I was in a hurry as I had an appointment, she gave me a filthy look and muttered something under her breath.

I now avoid walking into Westfield via the entrance they're situated at.

When will the shopping centres realise these muggers in the halls make the shopping experience both confronting, awkward and horrendous?

When Pepsi Next was launched last year, they had a kiosk at Melbourne Central station and were giving out cans by the buckets. Being an OzBargainer, I naturally grabbed a few cans… or dare I say, a few too many.

I ended up lugging 10 cans on the train and bus back home - 6 in the jacket pockets and 4 in my backpack.

Now, I'd only grab one can/bottle. Or however many I can comfortably carry.

      You need a larger backpack.

About 2 years ago I declined a box of Nespresso capsules at Sydney QVB as I feel the whole concept is over-priced and I knew nobody with an appropriate machine. That evening, I learnt my stepson recently acquired one. Yet more proof I am not a true OzBargainer.

    • you are a trus OzBargaine PJ, you've got the special ozbargain bargainist coffee machine that is a spoon havn't you…

  • I always reject free massages, they will probably snap your spine.

I actually can't believe a thread like this is on Ozbargain! I for one have never turned down a free sample. My mouth subconsciously says yes as my hand subconsciously reaches for it.

    • Hahaha yes. My brain is also constantly on alert for the word free

  • Not quite the same thing but for years I tried to train the local junkmail and newspaper deliverers to not drop at my place.
Finally I hand painted a big polite sign and hung it in plain view where a squashed hedgehog could read it.
Have had almost nothing in two years.

Refused samples were food at supermarkets as cant eat certain foods. Didn't refuse Cellarbrations free wine sample the other day.

  • I turn down free samples - let someone else that wants it have it esp if it has to do with pets, babies or adult nappies as it's N/A to me.

Yes, I turned down free recycled water 600ml bottle at Toowong shopping centre Brisbane few years ago when they where trying to push recycled water on Brisbane. Sure the water is probably ok, but what happends when the system fails and then the corporations in charge of it lie about it, just like the giardia scandal in Sydney in the mid 90's where thousands of people got sick.

  • Every time

Yes, I have turn down samples, if one is obliged to stay and listen to pitch, watch demo, tried on skincare there and then etc.

Yes!, I hate them free perfume people, I'm like give me the bag or just shut up
