  • Does it count if it is under that price per case?

Try any wirra wirra reds…..church block (GSM), sparrows lane (shiraz), etc. I find it great value!!! They are usually around 15-20 per bottle

Based on the previous deal that I posted. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239156

    Apparently this is good: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_99141/zonin-regions…
    and this: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_703764/wine-men-of-…

Maybe you should up the challenge and make it under $10. Lol.

    • oooh might leave that for the next challenge towards the end of pay day

    • Yes, tried the Zonin Regions Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and bought again!
For the price, it is very good value, for everyday drinking.

I like the mcguigan's black label reds

Another vote for the Mcguigans an on offer can get them for about $7 a bottle at times. Great value for what you get.

    • thanks for posting

Every one has different tastes buds. I found Shiraz - Penfolds 2013 wires are very smooth and around $14.95

  • Parsons paddock cab sauv - often on Sale at 1st choice for $7. My favourite red at the moment. The Shiraz is pretty decent as well.

Pay a visit to Cloudwine on Clarendon Street in South Melbourne. They really know their stuff and have some great wines you don't normally find at the big Coles/Woolies owned stores. One of my personal favourites under $15 is the Mike Press Shiraz.

    • I have to remember this comment thanks

    • I'll 2nd this comment

Pepperjack Shiraz is about that price when on special. Hard to beat…

    • Yesterdays offer of $12.88 per bottle was nothing short of amazing.

      • Yes. A pity it did not last long…

  • I got the Xanadu Next of Kin Margaret Riger Cab Sav 2013 to try. Did a little bit of research online and this had a very high point rating. I've never bought a wine before based on points so let's see how I go. However, it was $15.99. I might need to sneak it under $15 loading up on deals or something. Pack of 6 were $15.19 from Dan Murphys.

94 points from James Halliday, not bad, here's his notes:

James Halliday - Published on 03 Jun 2016

      Rating: 94
      Drink By: 2033
      Price: $18.00
      Date Tasted: 27 Jul 2015
      Alcohol: 14%

87% Margaret River,13% Frankland River; 20% cold soak, 30% 28-day extended fermentation; 14 months in French barriques (20% new). This simply is one of the bargains of the year, a cabernet of verve, length, and delicious cassis fruit flavours built on a scaffold of balanced tannins.

I bought a James halliday 96 point grenache D'Arenberg- the custodian. Only bought due to the rating. It was Disappointing.

        • +1

I know what you mean. I learnt my lesson about relying too heavily on expert's ratings. Once I bought an entire box of 12, based on James Halliday's recommendation. Just to find that I did not quite like it.

Should have known; taste in wine is so subjective and preferences so varied. Now, if a wine is highly-rated, I will still only buy one to try. And if I like it, then I might buy more.

        • +1

@bluesky: I agree with all this, all very subjective

  • Can you not bump up to 20-25 max? There's a whole heap of good wines closer to that mark. ANything below $15 IMO isn't going to be a big red, but then again this is coming from someone who has had a fair bit of wine, and like a good coffee once you go strong and big you can't go back…

From my cheaper days, I do remember the wirra wirra church block is under $15 or so, and the "red knot" - forgot who does it but I still have abottle at home somewhere… one of the barossa or mclarenvale outfits, if you google it it should pop up. It was a red.

  • Oftentimes, I find the Cleanskin Reds around $10-13 to be good value as well. But of course, hit and miss. And sadly, unrepeatable - i.e. you cannot make a note of the winery, and get the next vintage.

  • Just bought the Neilson Estate Shiraz 2007 and the Reserve Shiraz 2008 ($18/24 respectively). They won bronze/ silver medal respectively.

THe shiraz 2006 is $16, just $1 above,it isn't too bad although I liked the other two as bigger.

  • Zilzie Estate Cab Sauvignon
This has been my favourite for a while now, I buy several boxes when on sale @ $7 or $6.65 for a box of 6
    https://www.firstchoiceliquor.com.au/Red%20Wine/zilzie-estat…

    On Sale at the moment

  • If you can find on vinomofo some reds like the rolf binder & some other outfit i've forgotten - they co-collaborated to make "the gunslinger". i think it was 09 that was beautiful, or 07 i had… gf loved it and im pretty sure they came out under $15 a pop. VInomofo would be one was of getting some labels below $15 a bottle ;)

Wynns Cab Sav or any other Wynns around that price are delicious. Old mate owns a winery, and reckons this wine is just as good as their more expensive wines like this one.

    • Are they not the same wine different vintage?

Good point though. Dan Murphy typically charges more for "cellar release". As OZB'ers, of course there are savings to be had, by buying young and storing ourselves. Wait a few years, then quaff :-). (Of course, the vintage year matters too, that's assumed).

      • +1

I suppose? All I know is: it's a good drop. And ATM just slightly above OP's budget.

        • Thanks for the recommendation. I will certainly check it out. I used to enjoy the Wynns cab sav black label, back in the days when they were like $15-20 with discounts, but their prices have gone up so much. So this must be their new cab sav at a more affordable price range - a good thing!

@bluesky: the price seems to fluctuate quite a bit. maybe wait for a sale

  • The French reds are quite nice:)

  • Vinomofo

  • Deen de Bortoli vat 1 durif any year , always scores well from james halliday & for a durif well priced at around $12.

  • ReWine at Preston Market. Classic Red $4.50 to refill your old bottle or $7.00 in theirs. Even cheaper by the 20 litres.

  • My wife and I call the Three Brothers Shiraz our House Red! https://www.nicks.com.au/2013-three-brothers-reunited-shiraz

Plus I have always found the Reillys R Shiraz to be reliable over the years and just makes your price point at $14.99 https://www.nicks.com.au/2014-reillys-r-shiraz

  • Hubby subscribed to Naked Wines. They support the gourment vineyards and seem to have nice selection.

  • Pillar Box Red Shiraz. $13 bottle. Fantastic wine.

I would also recommend Water Wheel Shiraz.

    https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_384011/water-wheel-…

If you buy 6, and stack discounts from Cash Rewards and use an eGift card, you can buy it for around $8.40 per bottle.

  • The wife and I are huge fans of the 2014 Borsao Tocado Grenache as a 'daily drinker'. $8.99 at Dan's / $8.55 in any six, and it surpasses many in our rack that cost 3x that.
