AirAsia & PayPal

Hey All,

Just wondering if anyone can confirm that Airasia has changed their payment methods. If i remember correctly Airasia advertised anyone paying with AUD would be given the option to use paypal and thus save you extra in fees. Ive booked over 40 flights with Airasia over the last two years and for most of them i remember only using paypal.

I am needing to make a few extra bookings for Intra Asia flights in August 2016 however the Paypal option is not available anymore. I know you can still use paypal for flights that are departing Australia and returning (only if booked with a flight originally departing Australia), however i cant find anyway to use paypal for oneway flights to Australia, domestic or international Asian legs.

I have tried live chat with them today four times!! and every time i ask this question the chat window tells me i have been disconnected (after it lists my comment as seen)

I then tried to contact them on Facebook and was told "That shouldn't be the case as we accept Paypal payments all ways" and to contact them via live chat.

I remember before you could change the currency to AUD and then pay with paypal but now it's no longer available.

  • Thankyou! ok so i haven't completely lost my mind lol. I hope it comes back soon as it was a great feature, Strange the main page of Airasia currently shows advertisement for using paypal as a payment option.

If I'm not mistaken, I was given the option of paying AUD currency with POLI in the recent megasale purchase. In the past, it was Paypal.

    • Yeah i can pay POLI in AUD for Malaysian domestic and international flights, however i wanted use PayPal like before as i am using a 18 month interest free credit card and making a lot of reservations. Thanks for confirming

I had this problem before. Pay using my credit card in MYR and get charged 3% by the credit company or get screwed over AirAsia's exchange rate converting to AUD. Either way, I was screwed.. and not in a good way.

I have a solution for you but first some venting.

    1. AirAsia's Facebook department is either high on drugs or incompetent. They will always give you the answer they expect to be true without investigating themselves so they're hopeless for technical questions (i.e. any situation where you need support).
    2. My first comment was uncalled for. Phone and on-line support are equally unhelpful.

So here's the trick (assuming you've already selected AUD):

You want Paypal, use m.airasia.com, the mobile website.

    You want POLi, use www.airasia.com.

Both are treated as "direct debit" and charged the same lower booking fee (~4 MYR converted).

Note that m.airasia.com sometimes plays up on my desktop.

And like geek001 mentioned, you can't win since AirAsia uses a wonky exchange rate. For ex-foreign flights I use POLi/Paypal in AUD for the promo domestic fares from KL (since the AirAsia exchange rate is negligible compared to the CC fee difference) and alternately, pay in foreign currency with my Citibank debit card for fares costing real money (where AirAsia exchange rate loss is worse than the CC fee difference).

    • Mate you are amazing! Thank you so much for this. I tried via the Airasia app and had the same problem but didn't think to try the mobile site. Thanks again!
