I need to check out the quarter cask, can it compete with lagavulin 16?

    • +6

It decimates all before it. It'll put hairs on your hairs. Warnie uses it as shampoo.

      • +4

Them's fightn words… nothing touches Lag 16 in my collection before going to 18's of the nice picks :)

        • +1

Does the Lagavulin come with a lifetime lease to a 1 sq ft plot of land though?

        • Have you tried the 12? Heaps better than the 16 (the price reflects it though)

      • +3

Not sure if 'decimates' is appropriate, but yes, quarter cask is an amazing dram.

        • Maybe @supabruda meant it's 1/10th as good as the Lag? Or is just 10% less than as good as the Lag?

    • +1

Bought it in Japan for $35. Laugh at the $130 value here. Still prefer Lagavulin though.

    • The quarter cask is quite similar to Lagavulin 16. I would put Lag before it any day of the week but having a whisky shelf with only Lagavulin on it is boring.

      Worth it for variety.

    • No. It can't. It doesn't have the maturity - and don't fall for this no age specified crap. It's a ploy to sell cheap whiskey.

This cannot even compete with Laphroaig 10.
      Come at me bros.

      • Your probably in the minority, from what I gather the majority prefer quarter cask over the 10 year.

        • Least toxic reply I could have expected. You're a star. But I do say side to side you can taste the youth, and the short finish.

I'll do another blind side by side given your encouragement.

        • alright, re-tasted and yes, the quarter cask cannot hide its immaturity. Honestly if they were the same price I could almost understand people swinging either way… But lets call these "age not specified" bottlings for what they are - Overpriced younger whiskey for those with more dollars than sense, and a palette unable to tell the difference.

          FMMV

        • @ozbjunkie: I do agree no age statement is kinda bad (hello yamazaki). Although whisky maturity is a funny business. I read somewhere the Amrut 4 years maturity in india is as good as any 10 12 yo bottle in scotland due to the weather. Weather in India is warm hence the maturity process is faster. Same thing applied to quarter cask, it will mature quicker than normal cask due to more contact between the cask and the whisky (volume wise). From what i remember, I quite like the quarter cask.

we get gouged in Aus on whisky.

just in Japan and bought a 750ml bottle of King whisky at the supermarket for ¥ 698 (AU$9) . it was a really smooth whisky. I was very pleasantly surprised. I was expecting something like teachers or johnnie red. but it was, for the price, excellent. even for triple the price I would have been extremely happy.

    • You should go to Cambodia.
I couldn't believe the prices there.

      • I got a bottle for $2 in Cambodia. It was shit, but hey, it was $2. It didn't matter too much when it was being mixed with Coke.

  • Pretty damn good price on the Leffe Radieuse as well ($69 for a carton of 24). Looks like that's equal to the historic low.

Edit: nabbed a bottle of the Quarter Cask and a carton of Leffe… it's going to be a good day when that order arrives!

Almost a $60 saving there, and a great drop!

    • Never had Glenfarclas before, what can it be compared to?

      • I've only ever had the 12 year old, which was spicy/fruity. Almost like a Glenfiddich in a way, but pretty smooth. At that price, its definitely worth having in the collection.

        • Hmm okay I guess will get the 15yo and forgo an extra bottle of the quarter cask.

    • Tasted all the Glenfarclas last week. The 21yo is very smooth and well balanced. Next one down is 15yo.

    • Glenfarclas pricing is backwards in Aus, in Europe the glenfarclas 15 is cheaper than lagavulin 16, no idea why the 15 retails for $150 here.

      • When I bought my last bottle of Glenfarclas 15 eighteen months ago, I heard rumour the prices were going up. I think I paid $110 for my bottle, and within a couple of months they were going for $139.99. This was before any major currency depreciation from memory, it was just a naked cash-grab on the part of the distributors here, based on whisky trends and what the market would bear. During that time, I watched DM's put the price on the 21yo up $60 overnight. It was the same stock, not even bought at a new price :(

        • +1

I bought the 30yo around that time for $350 from DM (it was $450 on their website). Within a month, it was up to $750 and has remained there. I cracked it last weekend and it was amazing.

  • Can any connoisseurs recommend what the best go-to "non-peaty" scotch at the same price/quality level as Lagavulin 16/Laphroaig Quarter Cask?

I have tried the above and enjoyed them, wanting to try a different smoother taste scotch this time.

    • +2

You can't go wrong with the Glenfarclas 15yo.

      • +1 Glenfarclas!

    • Glenfiddich is pretty good at the discounted price.
If you like sweeter ones, Glenmorrangie is good too

    • Glenlivet Nadurra

    • If you're willing to chuck on an extra $20, Macallan is great.

Personally, I'm trying to hunt down another bottle of Hart Brothers 10 yo Bowmore aged in Sherry Oak. If anyone here knows where I can come across it, please, hit me up!

      …Dan's seems to be dry.

      Oh, and there's this:

Which one of these whisky is the best mixer for Coke? I don't want the whisky to ruin the perfect Coke taste.

    • +6

best to sniff the coke if you dont want to ruin the taste.. ;)

    • +1

You should put bourbon with coke. It makes both drinks palatable.

  • Dan murphys pricematched for me too!

    • +2

On in store pick up or devliery?

    • +1

Which Dan? I asked couple of them to match but they said they won't match online sellers.

  • Holland park in qld. Didn't bat an eye.

    • You did well sir. Their policy is to only match stores within 10km that have the product in stock I'm pretty sure.

  • +1

yep that's a nice one….. I'll set it aside for Christmas… Maybe. Thanks OP.
Got the PX Cask one and I think that's my favourite I've tried

    • Interesting to hear you say that. For some reason I don't like the PX Cask at all. A bit too harsh and I don't taste the Peat anymore. Maybe I should give another try

Quarter cask is nice but I still prefer the Lagavulin 16 (or 12 if i can afford).

      • bro can you tell me why the Lagavulin 12 is more expensive than the 16 - I dont understand - is it just because its a cask strength bottling?

        • Yes. I believe mainly it's the cask strength bottling makes it more expensive. Based on my basic Math, for every bottle of cask strength Lagavulin (@56%), you can bottle 1.3 bottle of 43% (which is the 16). Age is generally not a good indication of how good (or expensive) the whisky is. For example a Bruichladdich Octomore 5.1 (5 year old) will cost around $250. Supply & demand probably is a bigger factor to the price of whisky. So depending on the quality and the number of the bottles released, the price can be vastly different.

        • @od810:
Thanks for the enlightening and informative reply :)

Edit: Although I disagree about the age statement not being indicative of usually better whiskeys, at least compared to no age specified whiskeys from the same distillery. See my rant on Laphroaig quarter cask above.
Of course I just agree that comparing across distilleries is more complex than age statements.

        • @ozbjunkie: There's a lot of ridiculous things with Whisky, I understand what you mean. Look at Yamazaki and Sullivan Cove. You used to be able to get a Yamazaki 12 for 100ish, now you can't even get the no age statement Yamazaki for that price. And Sullivan Cove, i haven't seen a French Oak bottle for under $600 after it won the Whisky Mag award. More and more distilleries move to no age statement bottling due to high demand. Also they release bazillion bottles which confuse the crap out of me. For me the 2 distilleries (at affordable range) are quite consistent are Lagavulin and Bruichladdich (i'm a peat head). There are some upcoming ones which are surprisingly good. I quite like Amrut and Ledaig.

P/S: It's always fascinating to chat about whisky. It's just too good.

        • @od810:
Reddit - scotchit seems to be a decent place to discuss a dram. I enjoy Ralphy's YouTube reviews also.

Had a cheeky legavuin distillers Edition 1991 last night. Just to humble brag :)

Ordered Quarter cask and Glenfarclas 15 on Monday, delivered today (Syd CBD). They even threw in a 4pk of beer - gratis! That sort of thing might keep me coming back, Gooddrop :)

    • always love receiving bonuses in online orders and ensures repeat custom. well done Gooddrop.

    • I made the exact same order as you! (ordered Tuesday). I wonder if I will get a 4pk.

    • +1

I also received the 4pk of beer as they mention in the product details on their website for this product http://gooddrop.com.au/viru-premium-estonian-beer-24x300ml/

    • tried the beer today…. pretty awful actually :(

  • Me and my beard just wanted to say "dram"

  • As always FastWay courier stuffed up my delivery.

    • THE WORST. Took me so much longer to get the goods. Every time I've had a delivery it's been painful
