Need a Sim Card for Trip to USA

Hi Guys, looking for some advice. I am travelling to the USA (Florida) in mid-August and I want to get a SIM card either for voice/data or even just for data, so that I can use my phone while I'm there to:

1) Order cars via UBER
2) Use GPS on my phone
3) Make calls (rarely)
4) Receive calls (voip is OK)

Can anyone relate any experiences they have?

As far as I can see, I could use something like Travelsim, or I could buy a pre-paid sim card once I get to the USA and top-up as required.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has tried either of these options, or something else.

I may also be returning to the US in mid-October, so it would be good to be able to use the same service on the second trip also.

Thanks in advance.

  • I was only thinking this morning that I have not seen a post from Travel Sims Direct for a while whom I've used on a number of occasions previously. As I will again need one for October/November it is hoped these guys will have a special soon.

  • It is too hard to get a sim from here (they want a US credit card to pay for it) and there's no guarantee it will work.

I went recently and got a T-mobile card there. Depending on where you're going, you also have to consider coverage. We drove from LA to Vegas and I had coverage all the time.

    • Travel SIM Direct and SIM Corner will sell them too you easily enough.

      • I wanted assured coverage and lots of internet.

T-mobile was $60, lots of calls, sms and 10gb. I spent over a week in Vegas and surrounds and others (from here) had all kinds of dropouts and lack of reception in the bowels of casinos. I don't know who they were using but I would get T-mobile again.

  • I just buy an AT&T Go Sim when I get there and buy some prepaid credit. Something like this:

    https://www.att.com/cellphones/prepaidphones/sim-card-kit-ph…

Last time I purchased the sim card on ebay before I left Australia and it came with instructions on how to add credit before you arrive in the US.

  • I just walk into AT & T while there or get at airport about $30 for a month.

    • Sounds like a plan, thanks.

  • T-mobile now also has this https://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-international-to…

AT&T generally has better coverage but for some reason I find T-Mobile ones are less complicated. I'm also going there later this year, finding good prepaid plan there always gives me headaches.

    • Nice one thanks. If I can find an outlet at the airport that would be handy.

  • Yeah going to Hawaii, dont think there is one in aiport.

$30 USD for 2GB is good.. better than the Simcorner at the airport for $59AUD for the same thing. If only there was one at the airport… cant call the uber…

  • Update. I bought an AT&T sim starter kit for usd$10 and a $45 unlimited 30 day prepaid card from Walmart. I could have bought a cheaper card, but the data amount was only 100mb so in the end o decided to go for $45 card. All up $55 USD so about $80 aud. More than I expected but extremely handy for google maps and calling uber cabs etc.
