Does It Make Any Difference Which ADSL Provider I Choose?

I'm looking at getting ADSL2+ in a rental this week and wanted to know if it makes any difference which provider I choose?
Obviously different costs but from a performance angle will all providers have the same speeds?
We are in Florey ACT. The providers coming up on the ADSLexchange website as as follows.
Spintel
Dodo
TPG
Escapenet
Everynet
Mynetfone.
Belong says no but Next door says yes which seems odd.

The maximum speed you can get is determined by the copper wire between you and the telephone exchange. You can't do anything about it, and all providers will be the same.

Different providers may have their own ADSL equipment in the exchange. This shouldn't make much if any difference to the speed you get.

Your ADSL modem can make some difference - some modems chipsets work better over longer distances, and some work better over shorter distances. Some people say that some modem chipsets work better with some exchange ADSL equipment, but I have no experience with this.

The moment-to-moment speed that you get from a provider depends on the bandwidth that the provider has available, and what the other people sharing the bandwidth are doing. This can be vastly different with different providers.

    • Thanks for that. So is there a way to know who has the most bandwidth available in my area?

Also, I have a Telstra gateway max router, would this be locked to Telstra or can I use it with my chosen provider?

      • Even if one provider has more bqndwidth, you need to know the number of users(customers) are using at the same time as you.

My guess is, the more well known ur provider is, the more customers they have and more sharing of their bandwidth.

        • So if you sign up with someone and find that they are congested is it possible to just cancel?
Last thing I want to do is sign up to unusable ADSL and be stuck paying for it.
          I'd rather stick to wireless.

        • @dan76n:

Sign up to a month to month, don't lock in a contract for 12 months.

At worst, u will be stuck for the end of month.
