Seagate 4TB Hard Drive Turning off question

Hi
Purchases this hard drive - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256915

Just want to know for those who have one if this is normal or not that the drive turns it sell off (Light goes off) when I am still using the computer but not the drive. When I access the drive the it turns back on. I just thought it would say on all the time until the computer goes to sleep or turns off

  • Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Settings > Hard Disk > Change to your preference.

  • normal or not

    Sounds quite normal to me.

  • I'm using it on iMac

So the hard drive is just going to sleep when not in use?

    • Yes.

    • Energy Saver-> untick the 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible'

      https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecareā€¦

EDIT: USB disk drives will always spin down when not in use. The only way to keep them spinning while they are attached, is to write a small cron shell script that writes to the disk periodically. For example, you could make a text file and keep adding to the text file. This will prevent the drive from sleeping. You can also use apps like this

  • Ok thanks guys

  • Wait until the drive is completely inaccessible. Then the fun really starts.
