In general in my experience, it is probably true for things that are cheap 8 times out of 10. But paying a premium does not guarantee that you don't get a lemon.

It's the exception that proves (as in tests) the rule.

End of Line sales, because those were pricier beforehand. So sales on EOL products can be cheap and products can be decent.
Anything that relates to your personal preference? You can get something expensive and end up still hating it.
Also, anything that has brand premium tend to offer less than what you pay for.

That said, as geek001 said, I think being expensive doesn't really guarentee quality but cheap products tend to be cheap for a reason.

all these fancy burger places that keep popping up, burgers are usually quite expensive, but I've yet to have one that was worth the price.

Making burgers at home… usually cheaper, healthier, and tastes better.

      • Yeah, but that defeats the purpose of buying fast food.

        • +1

But some of these fancy places arnt even fast :/

        • @phocus:

I'd go one step further, and question if they're even food

My wife sent her sister a birthday card last week. Because of its shape, instead of $1 the stamp had to be $2. For 18gm weight. In the same state, it was going to take 4 days. It was quicker 100 years ago.

    Kitchenaid kettles

  • It always depends on what your use and expectation is.

About DSE, I bought a 40" FHD DSE TV for $225. Other people have complained about its ordinary TV tuner and bad sound and have returned it.

I use mine as a display for 720p or FHD content and for consoles.

I rarely use it as a TV, I think I have watched maybe 2hrs of Live TV, all Formula 1.

I dont care about sound as I route the audio out via 5.1 surround speakers.

To me this is the one of the best value TVs I have ever used however as a plain TV with its inbuild speakers I can understand why people dont like it.

Also it has no warranty now.

    • Same! I don't know about the tuner (who watches TV anyway?). I've got a Chromecast attached as it's great. Sound isn't that bad.

Anything on the property market ;)

    • yep, that's so true! here in SW Sydney, you pay 900,000 for a shack! LOL

  • Whenever I buy Panasonic goods.

Panasonic are not a cheap brand, but I have been disappointed with every Panaosonic purchase I have ever made.

I therefore no longer buy Panasonic - give me Sony, Samsung or LG every time.

    Apple & Monster products.

  • Sony - whenever I've splashed out on Sony products I've been left bitterly disappointed. Not only with the products themselves but the customer service as well, I just avoid them altogether now.

    HDMI Cables

    • I disagree. I actually bought a cheap one years ago, and it kept dropping out when plugged in through my amplifier. When connected directly through the TV - it seemed okay.

I went through a lot of effort to even get my amp checked under warranty - in the end, I found out it was my dodgy HDMI cable causing all the issues!

      • +2

doesnt mean its worth buying expensive Monster cables. but there are some super-cheap HDMI cables that do skimp on the metal in the wiring itself.

  • Buying 40 Xbox 360 games for $40 during JB Hi-Fi's stuff up last year.

It's a deal so good, I've bitten off more than I could chew (only finished 5 so far).

  • It is rarely true. You usually get significantly less than what you pay for, especially when you pay "premium" prices and the product is anything but "premium" quality.

  • Good topic. although the general rule is You Get What You Paid For, there are exceptions to this, such as in headphones, computer accessories, even music speakers. you can always find a good bargain on Gumtree for those!

  • True when it comes to hand tools. Quality tools are not cheap.

  • SMEG anything, was "lucky" enough to win $20,000 of it once - could pick whatever I wanted, bought the most expensive of everything - holy moly, worst products ever, couldn't believe the faults, problems they caused, delays in fixing. Only way to get new seals on doors was to buy new doors ($400 each x 4), but they never told me this till the warranty ran out- just had me waiting for seals for 2 years. I could go on, but worst products ever.
