2016 Australian Olympic & Paralympic $2 Coins for $2 @ Woolworths (In-Store as Change) & Royal Australian Mint (Online+Postage)

1280

From today, one of 12 million Rio 2016 commemorative $2 coins to be released over the next month could make it from the Woolworths checkout to your pocket. The coins will be released exclusively through Woolworths and customers could find one in their change at the checkout.

For $2 you can pick up one of these cool looking Olympic themed $2 coins.
Available from Woolworths and the Royal Australian Mint.

Different colours starting each week:

Week 1: Tuesday 19 July 2016 - Blue
Week 2: Monday 25 July 2016 - Black
Week 3: Monday 1 August 2016 - Red
Week 4: Monday 8 August 2016 - Yellow
Week 5: Monday 15 August 2016 - Green
Week 6: Monday 22 August 2016 - Australian Paralympic Team coin and coin in folder

Or for $15 you can get the set of 5 x $2 coins in a little plastic folder (this started 27th July)
So pretty much paying $5 for the folder.

Looks pretty cool for all you coin collectors and/or Olympics lovers.

Enjoy!

Edit: Lot of people asking how this is a bargain since its $2 for a $2 coin (fair point).
While the coin is only worth $2 it has more meaning and therefore to a collector is worth more than $2.

Also you may be able to use the woolworths gift cards to get %5.25 off (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/258891) as the69thhokage suggested.
I haven't tried this though.

I may have to get the set for the first one I missed. Thanks nonetheless!

Question: Is this still considered a deal if I pay $2 for $2?

    • +14

2% paywave with ING while it still lasts. Pay only $1.96 for $2.

      • +3

Combine with 5.25% off gift cards!

Lol see my comment below. Remembered it just before you.

        • You can't combine payWave and discounted gift cards.

        • +1

          @sween64:

You can if you purchase the gift card with paywave…

        • @WaywardOne: Those gift cards are only available online. No PayWave.

        • @sween64:

          Ah yes, you are correct.

      • HAHA now that's the OzBargain spirit…

Sadly doesn't work though - no cash out on pay wave!

  • +23

    A bargain at 0% discount.

  • Can you use these coins to pay for stuff?

    • +1

Yes, WW will be giving them as change. I'm not sure you can buy the individual coins from WW.

      • But the title says I can get "$2 Coins for $2"

        • +1

Yeh, you can buy them from the mint for that. But if you read the link, it says
"From today, one of 12 million Rio 2016 commemorative $2 coins to be released over the next month could make it from the Woolworths checkout to your pocket. The coins will be released exclusively through Woolworths and customers could find one in their change at the checkout."

Buy with the 5.25% off wish gift cards from cash rewards

  • -1

The description on the website is creepy. Since when does WW launch coins. I thought it was up to gov't to release the coins/notes and decide on the quantity released

    • +6

It is the governt who have released them if you bothered to read the first paragraph see below.

To celebrate Rio 2016, Woolworths and the Royal Australian Mint have launched a series of limited edition Australian Olympic and Paralympic $2 coins, and the only way to strike gold is by shopping at Woolies.

      • +7

I stand corrected. However the govt should nor be encouraging the public to shop from one store over another. Transitionally these special coins were released to the post office ans new coins to the banks

        • +3

Woolworths is slowly replacing the post office

        • +6

          @muncan:
I stand corrected twice. When will they replace our government?

        • +3

@CandyMan: after they've replaced the lobby

        • @CandyMan: When they work out how to turn politicians into self serve buttons as opposed to just plain self serve

  • +2

No deal as the title says - $2.00 for $2.00. Using math, there is no discount at all.

    • +3

I would argue that it has sentimental value :)

      • +29

        Then post it on OzSentimentalBargain…

        • +7

There's a site for that? Oh man I can't wait to jog down memory lane, might even run into broden

    • Surprisingly many positive votes however.

  • -7

    HOW is this Bargain ??

    • +2

I swap my crappy dirty germ infested $2 coin for a freshly minted coin - bargain! No more potential for catching all sorts of horrible diseases from said coin and paying expensive doctors bills. See jv, you need to think beyond today's dollars and cents and think of the potential savings you could make

      • -1

I swap my crappy dirty germ infested $2 coin for a freshly minted coin - bargain!

still only worth $2… No savings…

  • +4

Please don't hassle the Woolies employees to sell you more than 1 coin as they're not allowed to by the mint. Some staff are not aware and will sell bags but this is the exception.

    • +1

WW aren't selling individual coins as far as I read. The link says they are using them as change and didn't say they were selling them.
The folder with coins for $15 and just the folders are available to purchased from WW though.

      • You can ask to swap coin for coin but limit is one. They must also use up the normal coins before using the new ones for change. I can't understand why people think they can make money as these will be in circulation and be common.

  • +1

You should go to ebay and see how much the coins are being sold at an inflated price.

  • +3

'hey uhh this might sound weird but can i have my change in two dollar coins?'

  • +1

provided you ask them nicely and if they have any left.

  • From ramint eShop it says the set of coins is unavailable. Any idea when we can order online?

  • +2
    • +5

and the seller is 'very scare' to sell it:) just read the description
"Very scare, get yours now before it's too late!"

      • +1

Don't forget the "5x Wally-ball coins sets" that are also included.

    • where's the woolworths click and collect option.

  • If you guys read the links in the goverment's webpage, you will find that they are sold in the prices higher than their values (like 3AUD for a 2AUD coin).

  • +14

How disappointing, the mint really missed a trick here. Imagine if they changed the images to represent Olympic life at Rio. The 50 cent could be a mugger and Olympian smiling, the dollar coin could be the corrupt cop standing over the athlete at the atm, the $2 coin could be a half finished apartment…

    • +3

      Priceless! No really.

    • +1

and the head on the coin slightly shrunken..

  • +2

So these are being put in the til as change? I'm sure some WW employees will make some good coin flogging rolls on ebay.

  • Am I the only one who noticed week 1 has already passed? Did I miss something?

    • Yeah it's weird, they advertise the coins in this week's Woolworth's catalogue and they didn't show it previously.

  • +1

Has anyone actually picked one up through circulation?

    • +6

Yes, picked up the blue one last week and the black one this week. All I did was went up to the counter where they sell cigarettes and asked if they had any of the olympic coins, which they did, and swapped 2 regular $2 coins for 2 of the olympic ones

      • Brilliant, thanks for that. That perplexes me even more about the eBay sales. With 12 million being minted, there will be quite a few in circulation for a while you would think.

        • If you look at the Mint website you will see that mintage is "unlimited". That means they will make as many (as they can be bothered) as required to meet demand. Probably a whole lot more than 12 million in the end.I read the Woolworths announcement as saying that they will be distributing 12 million of the coins - for which privilege they will have paid the mint/government quite a bit I would guess.

    • +1

I have seen some in "the wild"

      • +1

        Gotta catchem all.

  • This $3,000 1kg coin seems good value at AU$80,000

    • It got brodened. I knew I should have jumped on the deal before it sold out!

    • it is only worth ~$55K as scrap

  • +1

Can you buy $10,000 of these for amex points and then deposit them all and do it all again?

    • +1

There's no free postage from the mint, and you're not buying them from Safeway, only getting them as change.

  • +6

Is the federal government trying to prop up the poorly performing Woolworths business with this promotion? Very odd.

    • +1

I'm sure woolys would have been the highest bidder

      • At best, only Coles or WOW could be the only bidders by design.

Zero chance of a Mum and Dads coffee shop in the 'burbs of winning. Some very friendly back-scratching would have been exchanged/owed with this contract

  • +2

Two million of each coin. Don't think they will go up in value much if that's what people are hoping for.

    • Thats wrong. Have a look at the RAMint website. If there are less than 4 million of a coin minted, you can generally sell these on for a profit on ebay, especially when its in new condition.

  • At woolworths, can the coins be bought or have they just been mixed in with the checkouts coins?

    • +1

Mixed with normal $2 coins in the register.
The 5 coins albumn can be bought at Woolies. I think it's limited to 1 per transaction.

  • +2

Thx for posting.I am looking forwards to the multi colour coins.

  • I'm confused. Is it more of a "chance of winning" the coin by going through a checkout if they're giving them out as change or can you specifically ask for it?

Also is there any way to get the blue coin without buying the pack now that we're in week 2?

    • A1: technically, you are not allowed to swap your $2 coin for them - it must be given as change in a transaction - you must purchase something. however it happened to me couple of times that they gave me normal $2 coins as change even if they have the olympic one in the register, so i had to remind them don't fool me and give me the olympic one.

A2: you can buy the individual one rather than the whole pack for $3, however the postage will cost you like $8 from memory

      • Thanks, I ended up going anti-bargain and paid $15 for $10 worth of coins.

        • -1

          GTFO

    • +2

or you can try to catch them in wild

  • Can I overpay by $2 using credit card and expect $2 change? Wait. That'd be like getting $2 cash out. I'll do that.

    • No you must pay cash for it.

      • Says who?

        • +1

Says my local ww staff, I've collected 7 coins from there, basically went there everyday in the past few days so I know their rules inside out now.

Also technically you are only allowed to have 1 coin per customer per day so technically you'll have to go there the next day to get your next one.

  • +1

Damn. Here I was thinking you could actually buy the coins. Could've done what that guy in the US did ages ago, and use it as a scheme to rack up a billion frequent flyer points…

    • Haha yeah…that guy was a genius

    • You can!

But it will cost you $5 for the points and a lot of packaging

  • Can use staff discount for the $15 folder

  • Are the $15 sets in Woolworths? If so, where abouts? Are they in the aisles or at the checkout with the gums/chocolates?

    • I couldn't see them in the aisle at my local woollies, although I live in a dodgy area. I went up to the service counter and asked for it.

The lady asked.. You realise this is $15, right?.. Looking at me like.. You're an idiot, you can get them as change.

    • Ask at the checkout, they keep them there

    • Not in the aisles. It's at the cigarettes/phones/customer service counter. One per customer.

  • Buy 10k worth on Amex, get the qff points etc, deposit in bank, and repeat??? Is this possible

    • They are change, not a buyable product.

Best you can do is ask for cash out in $2, though as far as I'm aware this doesn't earn points.

  • Does anyone have a picture of the plastic folder set?

  • so is this limited or unlimited mint? Why it says 12 million?

    • +1

Put it this way, everything in this world is limited. In this case they are limited to 12 million coins altogether. Their perceived value will depend on the keenness and knowledge/ignorance of the buyer.

  • +4

I just bought 10 booklets from the mint, the value of these will go up if you keep them in the package

    • Already increased in value if you can ship for under $10. http://m.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=Rio+Olympic+coin+folder…

    • how much did you pay for a booklet? what is the face value of the coins in the booklet?

      • $15 for 5×$2 coins in booklet & apparently there is a seperate $2 paralympics coin released in a folder or something for $3 .

        • Oh ok, i thought there might have been a chance Lucy got a better deal buying directly from the mint
