Buying MacBook 12", DWI, Officeworks, Apple, or?

I am traveling to Japan on Sep and considering to buy a new Macbook 12" 2016 for TRS.

Thought there should be a sale from JB Hi-Fi or whatever but seems none happening…

I browsed a bit and found DWI seems having a best price at $1,679:

Mean while at Officeworks at $1,895

And Apple at $1,999

Didn't buy anything from DWI before, why can they do much cheaper than Officework? Will they lack of customer service or hard to get warranty repair?

Should I also try price match it with Officework? I did a price match with them once, it's not easy and cost me a lot of phone calls and time and finally they failed to do so…

Or, buy 1 in Japan and tax return there. I never done that before, worth it and easy to do so?

  • I've never had a bad experience with them, I think they've been around a while and shipping globally for some time.

Not sure if there is still stock, but officeworks had the 2015 version for $1350. No higher tech jump to justify price difference.

    • m… i'll think about it, thx~

DWI drop ships from overseas, no GST is paid. On import you will have to pay import duty. In your case it would be best to buy from office works. Price after GST refund works out to around $1773, and you get Australian consumer protection warrantee. However, GST refund would only work if you are coming back into Australia with another person. If not, then on your arrival you will be required to pay GST again, as the value is above GST free import threshold of $900 per person.

    • Thx for the reminder, I will give it to my friend who traveling with we come back. (Hopefully it's legal?)

Hmmmmm, 3 choices, none cheap nor good, I'd wait a little longer for JB to have a sale.

    • thx, same as wt I thought! let me pray it will come before 1 Sep…

  • Here's a tip for anyone interested:

Both Highett and Preston (VIC) Officeworks stores have the 2015 12" Macbook in gold available, ex-demo stock most likely. The stock shows as "Limited - Please call" on the site.

You can prob nab it for $1300 or less if you give them a call.

    • great I will take a look!

  • Just bought an Ipad air 2 from apple and the rep confirmed they are able to price match (large retailers) up to 10%. And you may even be able to get an educational discount bonus from them too.

    • Yea I heard that before, but still it can only be same as the price in Officework right? And I am not a student…

  • Don't think this will be a popular opinion but the macbook has shocking value retention. IMHO I would nab a fully specced one on gumtree with apple care since they are going for 1800 or under. Often they even include peripherals like a case, mouse, screen protector or even more often an AV adapter which you will need anyway. You can get a lot more value for your money that way.

    • Thx, considering I can do TRS and tax claim (my work need a mac), I think I would like a 1st hand one…
