  • I have this phone, can't fault it! Great price

  • Hello Moto

540p screen is hard to take in 2016

This is a basic phone which would be ideal for a tweenager, or an oldie that doesn't care much for anything but calls and sms. Also can act as a back up phone.

      • +2

Tweenager with computer / tech smarts and who visits Ozbargain would probably already own a much higher spec xiaomi though

        • Tweens have that much money these days (considering they're not old enough to work)? How the world has changed.

        • @Trishool:

You might laugh, but when I worked in a highschool as IT support and laptop repair (private catholic system) there were 12-14 year olds who owned phones twice as expensive as mine. Iphone 5s's and Samsung Galaxy S4's and what not. Poor old me, working a $26 per hour wage, could only afford to buy a mid-end LG Optimus 4x HD and occasionally eat instant noodles instead of buying school lunches just to save a few dollars.

They also had the best tech kit as well, year 7+8's get to use Dell Latitude 13 7000 series /i5+SSD. $1600 dollar machines, junior kids in year 6 get to use iPad Airs.

Then again, tuition fees one of the highest in sydney, so I guess a $600 dollar iphone is small change.

        • @scrimshaw:

Those kids were lucky!, the Receptions now even use them IPads!

        • +1

@scrimshaw: Yep scrimshaw know what u mean, some of those families have very deep pockets and sometimes it hurts. But it's not about what they have & we have not, could be about what we learn and the difference we can make.

No matter how much you have someone will always have more. We're all already very fortunate just to live in Australia.

Be content with what you have and find peace. :)

        • @Scrooge McDuck:
          Well said.

        • @Scrooge McDuck: Lol what makes you think I'm not content? That's a massive assumption.

        • @Trishool:

That might be directed at me, not you.

I have this phone too. It's a great phone for those that don't need a lot of apps. It only comes with 8gb of storage although memory is expandable to 32gb via memory card and with Android 6 you can now move some apps to sd card.

The 1gb of RAM can also be sluggish at times.

Also for those of you that play Pokemon Go, it isn't support for this device.

    • Just side load the apk (not that I recommend 1gb phones).

  • Besides the 540p screen, it has a 5mp camera that takes fairly bad photos, it's also quite thick and heavy, and no flash light. Otherwise it is a great little phone and I would still buy this over any Alcatel or ZTE.

    • +3

I recently picked up an Alcatel Pop 4 5" 4G from target for $60. It's absolutely amazing for the price. With a better screen and pretty much everything else similar, I'd suggest having a go at playing with one in an Optus store- you might be surprised!

      • hi can this handset be unlocked? i read somewhere here that optus handsets can be unlocked for free by phoning Optus? is that true?

        • Maybe get in touch with Optus and ask?

  • Hi guys

Stupid question. I was wondering if I can use this as a wifi hotspot for travelling. I will getting the 4g sim from travelsimdirect. my tablet is wifi only. I was looking at portable wifi modem routers and they are more expensive. I am using Samsung galaxy s2 atm otherwise I would have used it as a hotspot.

    thank you for any advice.

    • +1

      It can tether.

      • Another stupid question… using a mobile modem router obviously faster than using mobile phone (tether) ? thanks

        • No.

    • +1

Which ones have you been looking at? :P Can get the Huawei E5573 for $29 and others like it go on sale around that price too.

      • I was looking at the Docomo Japan 8 Day Unlimited Sim Card. Is this what you refering too? Does the Optus huawei require to be unlocked before I can use the docomo sim card? thanks

        • +1

Sorry, was referring to which mobile broadband modems you'd looked at because as I mentioned, there are ones that are cheaper than buying this phone. The E5573 is unlocked but only supports 1 of the 3 3G and 2 of the 5 4G bands that Docomo use. Unsure which band/s are used most so not able to say how badly lacking some of the bands harms your coverage.

Re the APN, TSD say they will send a user guide with the APN details as noted in the FAQ's, how the APN is changed on the E5573 shown here.

The Motorola also only supports 1 of the 3 3G and 2 of the 5 4G bands that Docomo use.

        • @awoff1: thank you. I will get the huawei one and hope for the best lol. thank you !

i bought a letv le 1 x600 phone for about 20 bucks more than this. not sure why you would buy this unless your an old person who deliberately only needs a phone for calls and messages.

    • Reminds me of that oldie but goodie …… "quick, hand it all over to the young people, while they still know everything".

  • I'd rather go for a ZTE Buzz 4GX or a similar handset… Around half the price of this phone after unlokcing, B28 support, and a better SoC.
