Low Km Car Insurance Suggestions?

Hello,
My car insurance is up for renewal, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for low km insurers.

Details: age 30+, VIC, <5000kms/year, 2009 car ~$10k value, garage, no claims etc comprehensive car insurance.

I've tried quotes with Woolworths and Real Insurance which were both reasonable. I had previously never heard of Real Insurance, however, I noticed they both have the same underwriter Hollard. And on the Hollard website I saw that Real Insurance was their owned brand. Real was the cheapest so I'll probably go with them unless someone has another suggestion.

I couldn't see any coupon codes for either of these if anyone knows of one as well.

I've tried AAMI, Australia post, ANZ, Budget, Dodo, Bingle, RACV (NRMA), Coles and they were all significantly more expensive.
Progressive Direct is my new cheapest quote.

If anyone knows how to find a list of insurers which are backed my Holland that would probably be my best bet. But my Googlefu failed me.

Thanks in advance!

  • Sgio? Rac?

  • How much is your premium?

    • The Real Insurance quote was $500. It seems reasonable, but the ocd OzBargainer in me wanted to make sure I have the best deal.

      • Seems expensive. My 2014 Mazda2 valued at $14,000 is $240 per year comprehensive ($500 excess)

        • Who are you with?

        • @lozbargain: sorry I forgot to mention, NRMA. They cover any driver too.

          @juicedpixels:
Wow, haven't found anything in that ball park at all. The NRMA site redirected me to the Victorian RACV arm who quoted me almost a grand.

  • progressive direct?

    • Thanks for the suggestion. Never heard of these guys before. Cheapest I've tried so far. Thanks again.

  • Also try Bingle, it's part of Suncorp Group and worked out cheapest for me. Edit: Sorry, just saw that you already tried.

    • Yep, Bingle seem to be cheap. They were the cheapest of the non limited kms quotes I tried.

Coles had the "cheapest or beat by $50" campaign.

    • I've tried before, Coles won't price match a low kms policy.

  • How well do you drive? Drop it back to third party property and theft then don't hit anyone. id be confident enough that I wouldn't crash into anyone else that I could risk it. (Have 'self insured' with TPP on what was an $8k for the last four years)

    • I was with Woolworths which is as you said Real/Hollard. If you have woolies credit card, you can get further discount. You got to be sure that you will be <5,000km otherwise it may become expensive compare to other options.

They used to let you carry over the KMs used less than 5,000km to next year but have stopped that.

I know people who just cancel the policy when 5k limit is over and get a new one, I think that's still cheaper and don't break any of their T&Cs as far as I know!

    • I would also recommend getting front/rear dashcams if you go this route. We had a bloke hit my wife last year from the left/rear and then claim that she hit him. Her version of events had him at fault…but it ended up with our insurer refusing to step in and defend us and we ended up having to accept the he-says-she-says situation and each party walking away bearing their own costs which sucked because he had a company car that would have fixed our damages and he wouldn't have been out of pocket any extra…but at least he's still got a $10,000 claim against his name and we only have minor scuffing on an old car that we plan dumping soon anyway.

  • Try your health insurer - Bupa white-label CGU policies and they're pretty good for me, and I'm on a limited k's policy

    Also QBE.

Reminds me, I should try shopping around again though…

Check the policy wording thoroughly if using Hollard. I looked at their pet insurance and boat insurance products and decided no because of the policy conditions. Insurance policies are not all the same.
